Gunman killed after trying to breach FBI office in Ohio, authorities say

An armed man wearing body armor tried to breach the FBI’s Cincinnati field office Thursday, sparking an hours-long standoff that ended when he was gunned down after firing at officers, authorities said.

The man tried to enter the visitor screening facility at 9:15 a.m., the FBI said in a statement, activating an alarm and triggering a heavy law enforcement response. He fled in a white Ford Crown Victoria onto Interstate 71, leading officers on a chase and firing in their direction, state Highway Patrol Lt. Nathan Dennis said.

The vehicle eventually stopped on a rural stretch of road, where Dennis said the man exchanged gunfire with authorities. He said they tried to negotiate with the man but he refused to cooperate. Shortly before 3 p.m., officers fatally shot him after he raised a gun at police, Dennis said.

State and federal officials declined to identify the man or describe a potential motive. However, a law enforcement source told The Washington Post that the man’s name is Ricky Shiffer. According to another law enforcement official familiar with the investigation, agents are investigating Shiffer’s possible ties to extremist groups, including the Proud Boys — a far-right group whose leaders are accused of helping launch the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol.

Shiffer’s name is used on several social media platforms by an individual who spoke about being at the Capitol on Jan. 6. Authorities declined to comment on whether Shiffer is connected to those accounts.

On the Truth Social platform, which was started by former president Donald Trump, an account with Shiffer’s name published a post at 9:30 a.m. Thursday that seemed to indicate he was writing after attempting to enter the FBI building.

“Well, I thought I had a way through bullet proof glass, and I didn’t,” he wrote. “If you don’t hear from me, it is true I tried attacking the F.B.I., and it’ll mean either I was taken off the internet, the F.B.I. got me, or they sent the regular cops.”

Truth Social did not respond to a request for comment, but Shiffer’s profile appeared to be taken down Thursday evening.

The confrontation comes days after the FBI executed a search warrant at Trump’s Florida estate. Since the search, threats of violence against the FBI from Trump supporters online have increased, and Republicans have intensified criticism of the agency.

Sen. Rick Scott (R-Fla.) likened the government to “the Gestapo,” and the New York Young Republican Club called for the arrest of those involved in the search. Far-right Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) tweeted “DEFUND THE FBI!!” She added an image of an upside-down U.S. flag, which many on the right have embraced as a symbol of the nation in distress.

In a written statement Thursday as news of the Cincinnati incident unfolded, FBI Director Christopher A. Wray warned against violence and threats directed at law enforcement, and of unfounded attacks on the FBI that undermine the rule of law.

“Violence and threats against law enforcement, including the FBI, are dangerous and should be deeply concerning to all Americans,” he said.

Gina Ligon, who leads National Counterterrorism Innovation, Technology and Education Center, a federally funded research center at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, said she has seen a “brazen” uptick in threats online in the days since the FBI search at Mar-a-Lago.

“The rhetoric that is so loud online right now should be taken very seriously,” she said.

Earlier in the week, the individual using Shiffer’s name on Truth Social posted that he was issuing “a call to arms” hours after the Mar-a-Lago search became public. He encouraged others to “get whatever you need to be ready for combat.” The Post was unable to confirm that the account belonged to Shiffer.

In May, a Twitter user named Ricky Shiffer said he was present at the Capitol on Jan. 6. In a separate reply that day, the user referred approvingly to the Proud Boys, several of whose leaders face charges in the Capitol riot, in response to a comment about the Supreme Court. No one named Ricky Shiffer has been charged in the insurrection.

Residents and businesses within a one-mile radius of Thursday’s standoff scene were told to lock doors and stay vigilant, according to the Clinton County Emergency Management Agency. Television footageshowed a man crouched behind a car amid vast, green fields as law enforcement gathered at a distance.

During the incident, U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland, while announcing that the Justice Department had filed a motion to unseal the Mar-a-Lago search warrant, called ongoing threats to federal agents and prosecutors unfair.

“The men and women of the FBI and the Justice Department are dedicated, patriotic public servants,” he said. “Every day they protect the American people from violent crime, terrorism and other threats to their safety while safeguarding our civil rights. They do so at great personal sacrifice and risk to themselves.”

FBI attacker was prolific contributor to Trump’s Truth Social website

In the minutes after an armed man in body armor tried to breach an FBI field office in Cincinnati, an account with the suspect’s name, Ricky Shiffer, posted to former president Donald Trump’s social network, Truth Social: “If you don’t hear from me, it is true I tried attacking the F.B.I.”

The Shiffer account appeared to be one of Truth Social’s most prolific posters, writing 374 messages there in the past eight days — mostly to echo Trump’s false claims about election fraud and, in the hours after FBI agents searched Trump’s Florida home, call for all-out war. “Be ready to kill the enemy,” Shiffer had posted on Tuesday. “Kill [the FBI] on sight.”

Shiffer was killed Thursday in a shootout, police said, and the Truth Social account has since been taken down. But the calls for pro-Trump violence are still a common presence online — including on Truth Social, where the top “trending topics” Friday morning were “#FBIcorruption” and “DefundTheFBI.”

Truth Social’s parent company, Trump Media & Technology Group, did not respond to requests for comment.

The Cincinnati shooting offers a glimpse at the real-world dangers of constant attacks from Trump and allied Republicans against federal officials in the days since FBI agents searched Mar-a-Lago, Trump’s Palm Beach, Fla., estate and the center of his post-presidential operations.

It also showcased how such violent anger could be encouraged in plain sight in loosely moderated online refuges such as Truth Social, where Trump supporters frequently tear down perceived enemies and call for civil war.

Trump has repeatedly attacked the FBI and Justice Department officials in public messages, including on Truth Social, where he told his more than 3 million followers Thursday that the Mar-a-Lago search was “a surprise attack, POLITICS, and all the while our Country is going to HELL!”

People familiar with the investigation told The Washington Post that the FBI had searched the home while seeking classified documents relating to nuclear weapons that could pose a grave harm to national security.

A Twitter account with Shiffer’s name included many messages mimicking Trump’s false claims of a stolen election. But a review of his social media accounts shows Shiffer was most active recently on Truth Social, the Twitter clone Trump created after most social networks blocked him in the aftermath of the U.S. Capitol riot on Jan. 6, 2021. In April, Shiffer tweeted at Trump’s son, Donald Trump Jr., that he had just opened his account there, adding, “I’m just waiting for your Dad.”

Authorities declined to comment on whether Shiffer was connected to Truth Social and Twitter accounts, but both featured his name, photo and general location and had been active before the shooting.

A law enforcement official familiar with the investigation told The Post that agents are investigating Shiffer’s possible ties to extremist groups, including the Proud Boys — a far-right group whose leaders are accused of helping launch the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol.

A review of the Shiffer account’s Truth Social activity showed he had posted dozens of times a day to the site, replying to pro-Trump influencers, attacking the government and suggesting violence was the most important way true Trump believers could defend the former president.

Similar messages are common on the site, including from Trump himself. In May, Trump reposted — or, in Truth Social terminology, “ReTruthed” — a message from another user that read, “Civil war.”

But Shiffer’s Truth Social account, which had 23 followers, showed him not just voicing anger but also calling for direct action to bring on armed conflict, urging Trump followers to stock up on bullets and “have your heart, mind, and body ready to jump into civil war.”

On Aug. 5, he posted, “This country has never had a worse enemy. 1776 was for far less, even World War II was for less.” That day, he also wrote, “Save ammunition and be ready and willing to hit the road as soon as you hear it has started. Someone who wanted to be a hero could not have lived in a better time period.” The post was ‘liked’ 24 times.

Shiffer’s posts appeared to regard the Mar-a-Lago search as a triggering event. On Aug. 8, the day of the search, he posted, “People, this is it. … This is your call to arms from me. Leave work tomorrow as soon as the gun shop … opens, get whatever you need to be ready for combat. We must not tolerate this once.”

On Aug. 9, he posted that “patriots are heading to Palm Beach” and that, if “the feds” try to break it up, “kill them.” “Damn straight insurrection against the people who usurped our government,” he wrote in a separate post that day. “I hope to see you there (I won’t be unarmed this time).”

His second-most-recent public post was a meme image showing Trump in the White House: “Retruth To If You Want President Donald Trump Back In Office!” His last post on Aug. 11, the day police said he tried to breach the FBI office, said, “Well, I thought I had a way through bullet proof glass, and I didn’t. If you don’t hear from me, it is true I tried attacking the F.B.I., and it’ll mean either I was taken off the internet, the F.B.I. got me, or they sent the regular cops while,” before ending abruptly.

All of the posts were visible Thursday night, and there’s no indication Truth Social had ever sought to remove them before their vanishing.

Shiffer’s profile said he was a construction electrician in Columbus, Ohio, who previously had accounts on Twitter, the video site Rumble and other sites blocked or deleted. In his biography, he wrote, “I am ready to handle this like an American.”

The FBI said Thursday that Shiffer had tried to break into the field office’s visitor-screening area before fleeing onto an interstate. He stopped and raised a gun at police before officers shot and killed him, the authorities said.

Since the attempted breach of the FBI office, some Truth Social users — including a verified account with 74,000 followers who said he was a designer for the site — have also shared baseless claims suggesting the attack was a “false flag” staged to make Trump look bad.

After months of weak user activity and technical snags, Truth Social remains a minor player on the internet with fewer than 4 million users — a small fraction of the 88 million Twitter followers Trump had before his ban.

Since Jan. 6, Trump’s online audience has fractured between a number of right-wing sites competing for the same limited following, including Gab, Gettr and Parler, where follower counts this year have stalled.

But David Thiel, a researcher at the Stanford Internet Observatory who has studied the site, said Truth Social has specialized as a never-ending Trump rally that functions almost like a fan message board, full of devotees eager to reaffirm other members of Trump’s base.

“It’s incredibly dull in most respects. It’s not where content producers are putting their efforts. They’re just syndicating content from right-wing news outlets and other places,” Thiel said. “But it is a place where you would expect to see this kind of single person presenting signs that they’re potentially going to act on something more radicalized.”

Truth Social’s online traffic jumped on Tuesday, the day after the FBI search, to nearly 700,000 visits worldwide, according to estimates from the online analytics firm Similarweb. The site averaged about 300,000 visits a day last month. Twitter says it has about 37 million active users in the United States every day.

Gina Ligon, the head of the National Counterterrorism Innovation, Technology and Education Center, a federally funded research center at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, said Shiffer’s online calls to violence showed similarities to previous attackers’ messages and offered a warning sign for potential future attacks.

Shiffer’s “call to arms,” Ligon said, was reminiscent of similar online posts from a suspect who allegedly shot and killed 10 Black people at a grocery store in Buffalo in May. She also compared Shiffer’s anti-government slant to that of Oklahoma City bomber Timothy McVeigh, whose attack in 1995 killed 168 people.

“The rhetoric that is so loud on the right now online should be taken very seriously by people because it mobilized [McVeigh] to an incredibly violent event,” she said.

Truth Social’s connection to the FBI attack draws a similarity with Parler, another social media site once popular with Trump supporters that prided itself on free speech. Before Jan. 6, Trump supporters shared false theories of election fraud and plans of descending on the Capitol to confront members of Congress voting to finalize the former president’s loss. Groups organized on the platform, and then users documented themselves on it participating in the riot. Amazon Web Services, which ran the cloud-computing system the site depended on, suspended it shortly after.

Domestic terrorism incidents have ramped up in recent years, fueled in part by intensifying white-supremacist propaganda.

Extremists have used social media to share incendiary political rhetoric, as planners for the Jan. 6 violence spread election misinformation and plans to stop the election. During the coronavirus pandemic, government restrictions energized attacks on public health officials and Democrats, such as Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, the target of a kidnapping plot by members of an extremist group.

Recent altercations reflect a trend in the country’s psyche: One in 3 Americans say they believe violence against the government can at times be justified, the largest share to feel that way in more than two decades, according to a Washington Post-University of Maryland poll.

Lauren Boebert’s ‘Jacka** Husband’ Jayson Allegedly Ran Over Neighbor’s Mailbox

Neighbors of Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-CO) called 911 twice on Aug. 4 demanding the sheriff respond to their neighborhood where they said the Republican lawmaker’s husband Jayson had driven over a mailbox and was threatening them.

In two 911 calls obtained by The Denver Post, a neighbor can be heard yelling at Jayson while simultaneously trying to explain the situation to the dispatcher, saying “It’s Lauren Boebert’s jackass husband, Jayson. He’s running over my mailbox right now”

“Stop, you jackass! Get the fuck out of here,” the neighbor is heard yelling at another person, who is presumably Jayson. “Come on, man. What are you doing? What did we do wrong?”

“There’s about to be some shit going down here,” he told the dispatcher after she redirected him to speak with her.

Both 911 callers said the incident began when Boebert’s son was racing down their residential street in a Razor Dune Buggy. When neighbors asked him to slow down, he reportedly told them to “Fuck off.”

“It’s the Boeberts, if you know who the Boeberts are,” one woman told the dispatcher. “I need the sheriff out here.”

Another person can be heard saying in the background “Our wonderful congresswoman.”

“He’s just speeding up and down the road, all over the place, just freakin’ through his property,” she told the 911 dispatcher. “He’s going like 50 miles an hour and this is a residential lane, there’s kids. We tried to stop him and he’d just freakin’ cuss at us and just left.”

Then the neighbor who yelled at Jayson said the man came racing down the street in his truck yelling about someone trying to punch his son, which the neighbor said no one did.

“This guy is as dumb as a post, but this guy is so irrational,” the neighbor said. “He just got chest to chest, face to face, looking to fight.”

When asked if anyone had any weapons, the neighbor scoffed and said “I’m sure he’s loaded to the hilt.”

“Do you know who his wife is? Lauren Boebert. She’s loaded. They all have guns,” he told the dispatcher. “I don’t know if anyone’s got a gun on them.”

The dispatcher also asked about whether anyone was inebriated, to which the neighbor replied “Jayson’s probably drunk. You could probably get him for a DUI, he just drove down here.”

Attempts to reach Jayson Boebert for comment were unsuccessful.

Although the dispatcher sent officers to the scene, the Garfield County Sheriff’s Office ultimately decided to let the neighbors settle the dispute, saying everyone “agreed to work it out as neighbors. No charges. No further action.”

When confronted by the 911 calls with evidence of possible drunk driving, speeding, property destruction and threats to harm other people, the sheriff’s office remained tight-lipped about the incident.

The leader of political action committee American Muckrakers then decided to take matters into his own hands by asking Colorado Attorney General Phil Weiser, the local district attorney and the Colorado Bureau of Investigations to look into the Boeberts’ relationship with the Garfield County Sheriff’s Office.

“This was clearly a serious situation as there were two 911 calls, five deputies and at least four families involved,” wrote the head of the PAC in an email asking for the investigation.

The cowards have to wear masks. Never mind. I am sure the FBI has collected every license plate number.

I do wonder what would happen if this masked protest happened in my home state of Georgia, where wearing a mask in public is against the law.

    Exceptions of course.

HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) – A new poll by the Republican firm Public Opinion Strategies shows Democrat U.S. Senate nominee John Fetterman with an 18 point lead over Republican Mehmet Oz.

The poll, conducted with the business-union alliance Pittsburgh Works Together, shows Fetterman with 51% support to Oz’s 33% with less than three months until the November election.

Public Opinion Strategies, which has an A- rating from polling analysts FiveThirtyEight, is the latest poll showing Fetterman with a double digit lead over the former television personality Oz.

Five of the most recent polls recorded by FiveThirtyEight show Fetterman with leads ranging from 9-18% despite Fetterman having less time on the road while recovering from a May stroke.

Wink, who has since been fired as Norwalk’s Republican deputy registrar of voters, has been held in jail in lieu of bond since her arrest on Jan. 20.

Former Norwalk official Ellen Wink, who was charged with murder in the fatal shooting of her tenant earlier this year, is expected to post bond after a judge modified the terms of her release on Wednesday.

Despite objections from state prosecutors, Judge Gary White will allow Wink to be released if she posts 10 percent of her $2.5 million bond in cash. If released, Wink will be required to wear a GPS-monitoring bracelet and will be placed on house arrest.

Supervisory State’s Attorney Michelle Manning argued against both the motion to the reduce Wink’s bond and the one to allow her to post the 10 percent cash bond, citing the graphic video that captured the fatal shooting of 54-year-old Kurt Lametta. Manning called Wink a “danger to the community.”

According to an arrest warrant written by Norwalk Police Detective Lindsey Taylor, on Jan. 20, Wink let herself in to Lametta’s home on Nelson Avenue allegedly to clean out his refrigerator ahead of placing the property on the market for sale.

The ensuing confrontation, which Lametta captured on video with his phone held at his side, shows Wink standing opposite her tenant in the home’s kitchen, Norwalk Police Lt. Art Weisgerber wrote in his warrant.

“Just as Wink turns around and appears to walk away from Lametta, two gunshots are heard and Wink is heard saying, ‘You b-----d’ as she proceeds to walk toward Lametta through the kitchen while firing a handgun at Lametta who eventually runs into the living room and collapses,” Weisgerber wrote in a separate warrant.

The video shows Wink pick up Lametta’s cellphone, walk outside and throw it into the bushes, the warrant stated.

A police officer later recovered the phone when it was heard ringing in the bushes, Taylor wrote.

In a call to a 911 dispatcher following the fatal shooting, Wink said she went to Lametta’s apartment to do some cleaning when he came at her, according to the police report. The report stated Wink can be heard yelling “he was after me” in the 911 call.

“She said ‘I am so tired of this guy, he is on the floor,’” Detective John Sura wrote in his report regarding Wink’s conversation with the 911 dispatcher. “She said that she had kept telling him to get out and had enough. Wink continued rambling about issues Kurt Lametta caused.”

According to the police report, Wink also told a first responding officer that she had fired a revolver registered to her five times at Lametta, adding he was “(expletive) driving me nuts.”

Wink is next expected to appear in court on Friday.
