Something in the water, perhaps?
^^ I believe the human mind just works like that sometimes.
A seemingly trivial matter can take on huge importance.
Dislike of someone or of a group of people can become an obsession.
Perspective can be lost, particularly by people without close friends or partners.
This is why countries that aren't entirely fucking bonkers have strict laws against owning guns.
^ Good points
Sadly, I found it rather amusing that this guy managed to trigger his own booby trap and survive long enough to realise what a complete idiot he's been.
There are all sorts of reasons for these being illegal. What if he was having a heart attack and emergency services were caught out...

Pensacola shooting: Saudi student kills three at US naval base
6 December 2019
The gunman who killed three people at a US naval base in Pensacola, Florida, was a Saudi student, officials say.
He has been named as Mohammed Saeed Alshamrani - a Saudi military member in training at the site. He was shot dead by officials.
The local sheriff's office confirmed eight others were injured in the attack including two officers. The shooter used a handgun.
It is the second shooting to take place at a US military base this week.
A US sailor shot dead two workers at the Pearl Harbor military base in Hawaii on Wednesday.
Authorities were alerted to the shooting at the base on the waterfront southwest of Pensacola at 06:51 (12:51 GMT).

Saudi king condemns 'barbaric' shooting at Florida naval base: Trump
US President Donald Trump said on Friday that Saudi Arabia's king had called to express condolences over what the monarch termed the "barbaric" killing of three people on a US navy base by a Saudi national.
"King Salman of Saudi Arabia just called to express his sincere condolences," Trump tweeted after the shootings in Florida.
"The King said that the Saudi people are greatly angered by the barbaric actions of the shooter, and that this person in no way shape or form represents the feelings of the Saudi people who love the American people," Trump added.
Trump repeated much of his comments shortly after, in remarks to reporters at the White House.
The military trainee opened fire at Naval Air Station Pensacola in Florida, killing three people and injuring seven others, including two sheriff's deputies who responded to the attack.
The Pensacola naval air station hosts 16,000 military personnel and more than 7,000 civilians, and is home to a flight demonstration squadron.
It is an early training center for naval pilots, and is known as the "cradle of Naval aviation."
While mass shootings in the United States are common, those at military facilities are rare.
Just two days prior on Wednesday, however, a US sailor fatally shot two people and wounded a third at the Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard in Hawaii before taking his own life.

Americans getting shot thread. Big news, of course they are. Where have you been?
You have to wonder what they were doing filming it.
Authorities have detained six Saudi nationals for questioning in connection with a mass shooting at the Naval Air Station in Pensacola, Florida, on Friday.
A member of the Royal Saudi Air Force opened fire with a handgun in a classroom on base, killing three and injuring at least seven before being killed by police. A source briefed on the investigation told the New York Times that six people had been detained for questioning. Three of those people were seen filming the incident as it unfolded.
Officials are looking into whether to classify the shooting as an act of terrorism. Some lawmakers are already calling the gunman a terrorist.
The gunman killed two during the attack and wounded eight others, including two deputies that engaged him. The eight injured were transported to a local hospital were one later died, according to the Navy.
President Trump said on Twitter that he was following the situation and offered support for the families of the victims.
"My thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families during this difficult time. We are continuing to monitor the situation as the investigation is ongoing," Trump said.
Trump also relayed a message he received from Saudi Arabia's King Salman bin Abdulaziz al Saud in the aftermath of the attack.
"King Salman of Saudi Arabia just called to express his sincere condolences and give his sympathies to the families and friends of the warriors who were killed and wounded in the attack that took place in Pensacola, Florida," Trump said.

A real tragedy this...
Miramar, Florida — The overwhelming use of force is being questioned after a chase in Florida ended in a deadly shootout with police. It started when two men, who the FBI said were already wanted for two similar heists near Miami, robbed a jewelry store and hijacked a UPS van.
After a 23-mile chase, the officers opened fire when the gunmen shot at them, leaving drivers in rush-hour traffic panicked and scrambling.
The two men who police said robbed the jewelry store were killed. But so was 70-year-old Richard Cutshaw, who was waiting in his car at the intersection. The UPS driver who was taken hostage, Frank Ordonez, was also killed.
Ordonez was father of two daughters, ages 3 and 5. Now his stepfather is criticizing the officers' actions.
"They disregard the hostage, they disregard for the people around the scene. They went out there like the old West," said Joe Merino.
Miami-Dade's police director, Juan Perez, explained why officers had to move in on the suspects, saying the suspects weren't just fleeing, they were being violent and "confronting officers shooting at them."
But Manny Orosa, who was Miami-Dade's police chief from 2011 to 2015, questions the tactic given the number of civilians and the hostage.
"If you're shooting into a truck and you don't have a clear vision of who you're shooting at, you don't just shoot at the truck," Orosa said.
It's not clear yet who fired the shots that killed the UPS driver and the innocent bystander. A complete investigation could take months, even years. The Miami-Dade officers who opened fire have been placed on administrative leave, which is standard during these types of investigations.

‘At least 100 shots fired’ in US shooting
A police operation is underway in the US where multiple people are deceased after rapid gunfire rang out in scenes “like a war zone”.
Another day another mass shooting adding to the stats. Speaking of which...
In 2017 144 police officers and around 1,000 active duty military members were killed in the line of duty.
Pretty shocking really except it actually isn't when you consider that in the same year 2,462 school-aged children were killed by firearms and that there have been 38,942 fatalities from 1999 to 2017 including 6,464 between the ages of 5 and 14 years old. It's an actual epidemic but Thoughts & Prayers(TM), 'my cold dead hands', gun rights... yada-yada... Who really gives a fuck about tens of thousands of kids being needlessly killed right.
Pentagon Orders Training Pause for All 5,000 Saudi Troops in US

The Pentagon has paused its training in the U.S. with Saudi nationals until officials conduct a thorough review. The directive follows a deadly shooting that killed three sailors and injured eight other people at NAS Pensacola, Florida, according to a senior defense official.
Deputy Defense Secretary David Norquist issued a memo this week following the incident saying leaders would review security and screening procedures for foreign students attending training in the U.S., as well as ongoing bilateral training programs. But Saudi students in particular have been ordered to take a temporary operational pause in training in what the Pentagon says is a "safety and security stand down" during the review, the senior defense officials said in a phone call with reporters Tuesday.
"This will apply to all Saudi students in the United States. So they will all continue to have classroom training, but operational training will pause during the course of this review," the official said.
There are roughly 5,000 Saudi students in the U.S. at this time for various training programs, the official said. The Navy first issued its own temporary grounding for Saudi aviation students training at three Florida bases earlier on Tuesday.
The latest development comes as thousands of U.S. troops are in Saudi to deter malign behavior from Iran in the Middle East.
Norquist said he has directed the undersecretary of intelligence "to take immediate steps to strengthen personnel vetting for International Military Students (IMS) and to complete a review within 10 days of policies and procedures for screening foreign students and granting access to our bases," according to the memo.
"These efforts will seek to more closely align IMS vetting procedures with those we apply to US personnel," the memo states.
The senior defense official said the U.S. military has trained more than 28,000 Saudi students over the life of our security cooperation relationship "without serious incident." But "we are going to take some short term looks at our programs to see how we can address any shortcomings," the official added.
At various events over the weekend, Defense Secretary Mark Esper announced that he had ordered a review of vetting and security following the shooting.
The FBI identified the suspect as 21-year-old Royal Saudi Air Force 2nd Lt. Mohammed Saeed al-Shamrani, who allegedly used a handgun in his shooting rampage.
The Associated Press reported Saturday that the al-Shamrani hosted a dinner party earlier in the week to watch videos of mass shootings.
One of the students who attended the dinner had videotaped the outside of the training building where the shooting was taking place, the AP said, quoting a top U.S. official. Two other students watched from a nearby car.
"I want to immediately make sure we're taking all necessary precautions appropriate to the particular base to make sure our people are safe and secure," Esper said on "Fox News Sunday."
"I want to make sure those procedures are full and sufficient," he said during the interview.

this is an incredibly depressing thread, but here's a tiny bit of good news that is related to one of the more devastating mass shootings in US history:
the newtown high school football team won the state football championship (on a last second touchdown!) on the 7 year anniversary of the sandy hook elementary shooting.
some of the players on the team had siblings killed in the massacre.
of course this win in a football game is not going to change anything for those directly impacted...but it does give some people in that town a little something to be happy about for a minute or two.
and btw, another piece of good news from about a month ago was that SCOTUS didn't block the families of sandy hook victims from suing the maker of the AR-15 assault rifle used in the massacre of 20 children

Inside a Texas Church, Guns, Bibles and a Spirited Firearms Debate
A shooting at a church outside Fort Worth has revived the debate in Texas over whether more guns create a more dangerous environment or a safer one.
Dec. 30, 2019
WHITE SETTLEMENT, Texas — Midway through a Sunday church service in the suburbs of Fort Worth, an all-too-familiar scene began to unfold: A man in a trench coat rose from the pews, pulled out a shotgun and opened fire, prompting terrified churchgoers to dive for cover.
But this was Texas, where a pair of state laws adopted since 2017 not only authorize armed security details at houses of worship, but also allow parishioners to bring their own weapons to church

Boy arrested after shooting that killed 4 in small Utah town
Associated Press
Published 9:57 AM EST Jan 19, 2020
A boy armed with a gun killed three children and a woman inside a Utah home, then accompanied a fifth victim to a hospital, where he was arrested, police said Saturday.
Police were still trying to piece together who’s who and what happened leading up to Friday night’s shooting in Grantsville. Investigators believe the victims are all related to one another, and officials declined to release information about the shooter other than he is a juvenile male.
“We’re trying to make certain that we verify people’s relationships among the deceased and the survivor,” Grantsville Police Cpl. Rhonda Fields told The Associated Press on Saturday. “As for motive, we don’t have any of that.”
It appears to be the largest mass shooting in Utah since 2007, when a shotgun-wielding gunman killed five people and himself at Trolley Square mall in Salt Lake City. It’s also the first homicide in nearly 20 years in Grantsville, a town of 11,000 about 35 miles west of Salt Lake City.
“It’s been a very long time,” Fields said.
The boy faces 10 charges, the most serious being aggravated homicide, she said. Police were not able to release his identity because he has been charged as a juvenile.
Officials said he is the only suspect. His relationship to the victims was not immediately clear.
The names of the victims have not been released, and their identities may not be publicly known until Monday, Fields said.
Authorities have not been called to the house in the past.
Police responded to a call of shots fired inside at home at approximately 7 p.m. Friday. When officers arrived, they found the bodies of two girls, a boy and a woman, Fields said.
The shooter and the surviving victim were gone, she said. Authorities later discovered that a person who arrived at the house after the shooting drove the suspect and the surviving victim to a nearby hospital, Fields said.
Officers arrested the boy at the hospital. He was being held at a youth detention facility.
The fifth victim had sustained a gunshot wound, was in stable condition and expected to survive, Fields said.
The person who drove them to the hospital was not involved in shooting, she said.
Grantsville Mayor Brent Marshall said the shooting happened in a very quiet neighborhood, the Deseret News reported.
“It’s an unfortunate tragedy that has taken place here this evening,” Marshall said. “Any time you have children involved in something, it becomes very emotional, very fast.”
Tooele County School District officials said on Twitter they plan to offer counseling to students when they return to school on Tuesday.
Utah Gov. Gary Herbert released a statement through Twitter.
“Parents and grandparents, secure your firearms! Everyone, hug your loved ones tight. And remember love, not hate, will heal broken individuals and families,” he wrote.

If there had been a good kid with a gun this senseless tragedy would've been averted.
Thoughts and prayers. It's too soon to talk about gun control.
