Why anyone would want to be a police patrol officer in the US today is a mystery to me.

Err, I rather think the problem is the standard of policing in the US whereby an officer is so fucking stupid to mistake a handgun with a full load for a taser or, just as bad, an officer is so fucking stupid as to think anyone with a functioning brain will believe their stupid explanation that they did make such an error.

with so many people "packing heat" its hardly surprising the police can also get a little trigger happy at times.

Indianapolis shooting: eight killed at FedEx facility | US news | The Guardian

At least eight people have been shot dead at a FedEx facility in Indianapolis and the suspected gunman has killed himself, police say.

Multiple other people were injured and went to local hospitals, a police spokesperson, Genae Cook, said at an early morning news conference on Friday.

At least four people were admitted to hospital, including one with critical injuries. Two others were treated at the scene and released. No law enforcement officers were injured.

“We’re still trying to ascertain the exact reason and cause for this incident,” Cook said. She asked people who could not reach family members working at FedEx to go to a nearby hotel.

Live video from local news outlets at the scene showed crime scene tape in the car park outside the facility.

A witness, who said he worked at the facility, told WISH-TV that he saw a man with a gun after hearing several gunshots. “I saw a man with a submachine gun of some sort, an automatic rifle, and he was firing in the open,” Jeremiah Miller said.

Another worker at the Fedex facility told local news station WRTV that at first, “two loud metal clangs,” rang out at the facility, adding, “They didn’t sound like gunshots at first.”

“Somebody went behind their car to the trunk and then got another gun, then I saw one body on the floor,” the worker said.

Another man told WTTV that his niece was sitting in the driver’s seat of her car when the gunfire erupted, and she was wounded. “She got shot on her left arm,” said Parminder Singh. “She’s fine, she’s in the hospital now.” He said his niece did not know the shooter.
The Gun Violence Archive says 147 mass shootings have occurred so far in 2021.
I wonder why it's only the U.S. that has this problem. I wonder if it could be all the guns?
I wonder if some serious gun control would make a difference.
Well probably not because people also kill people with knives so if you're going to control who has guns and what type of guns people can have you have to do the same with Knives, right?
And don't get me started on vehicle deaths.

With 8 dead, chances are at least 1 was all of the above.

    yes
    yes
    righto!

Sad state of affairs in the US. The problem is things will never change, because no one is making any changes to gun control laws! Too many guns out there already. Too many mental health issues as well.

RIP to the deceased! Unnecessary mass killings as usual!

I know, lets close all the state run mental health institutions and throw all the crazies out onto the street and while we're at it, let's make it REALLY easy for anyone to get a gun because my friends in the NRA have friends in the gun industry who think that would be an absolutely spiffing way to make lots of money. K?

What the gun control lobby needs t do, especially in open carry jurisdictions is get a whole lot of AA's dressed like badasses walking around with shooters on their hips.

    Ha!

Put more money into mental health and social programs. Make it near impossible to get a gun. Ban many types of guns!
And get the A holes out of the NRA..actually close it down. Biden should be (hoping) changing some things.

In theory, I think it is a great idea...however, the US is a top down society... and if you don't have the rules changed by people at the top like Biden, then this won't happen. NRA is an institution, and the 2nd amendment is also an institution that needs changing.

Any comment of mine on your BULLIT plan would be superfluous after such luminaries above have given their approval, though perhaps I would add in Surely in front of It’s Time.

This is like religion. People are raised to believe certain things like:
America has the best health care in the world
America is the 'free-est" nation in the world
America is the greatest nation in the world
Guns equal freedom and protect us from tyranny

It's so hard to convince them otherwise because these have become truths. There's plenty of other examples of this in various countries where ingrained societal norms are never questioned, despite being clearly dumb to outside observers.

Nevertheless, the govt takes the shooting very seriously.

Not only that the POTUS was so busy with it - perhaps penning the letter(s) to the loved ones - so he did have time to welcome the Japanese PM at the WH door (as always the case is).

But also his VP first commented the shooting until she had noticed that the Japanese was already brought inside by the doorman, so at last she greeted him very warmly...

Another mass shooting, this time at a trailer park birthday party in Colorado Springs. Boyfriend (ex?) turns up and shoots 6 before killing himself.

This quote in the paper struck me...

It was Colorado’s worst mass shooting since a gunman killed 10 people at a Boulder supermarket March 22.
That's only freaking 7 weeks ago!

    Yeah, that makes you think.

Colorado and Denmark is about the same size, population wise, and if it had happened here, I reckon a general election would be called within weeks, or something drastic like that.

No wonder they are scared overthere
