Scot Peterson charged over response to shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School



A former Florida sheriff's deputy faces almost 100 years in jail over charges stemming from his lack of response to a mass shooting at a US high school in which 17 people were killed.

Key points:

• Scot Peterson was school resource officer on the day a gunman entered a Parkland, Florida school and opened fire.
• Mr Peterson never went inside the school during the mass shooting, the Broward County Sheriff's Office says
• Nikolas Cruz, who was expelled from the school, has been charged with murder

Scot Peterson, 56, has been taken into custody on charges of child neglect, culpable negligence and perjury, Broward County State Attorney Mike Satz said in a statement on Tuesday (local time).

The charges, laid over Mr Peterson's response to the 2018 mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, carry a combined maximum prison sentence of nearly 97 years, he said.

Mohamed Noor sentenced to 12-and-a-half years' jail for murder of Justine Damond Ruszczyk



Former US police officer Mohamed Noor has been sentenced to 12-and-a-half years' jail for fatally shooting Australian woman Justine Damond Ruszczyk through the side of his police car.

Noor was convicted of third degree murder and second degree manslaughter for killing Ms Damond Ruszczyk just minutes after she called 911 to report a possible sexual assault in the alley behind her Minneapolis home in July 2017.

Judge Kathryn Quaintance said the jury members who convicted Noor had asked when the US police culture would change.
"Will there be changes? Change is needed," she said.

"Will some of the supervising officers be fired? Why should a civilian be afraid of approaching a squad car? What about the motto on the car to serve with compassion?"

Judge Quaintance also dismissed a defence motion to acquit Noor and set aside the jury verdict.

...I worked with her father in Iran and last saw Justine when she was crawling around on a Persian carpet in her parents' garden in Isfahan...the family has been plagued with a number of misfortunes of which this was probably the worst...

Just had the shooting a week ago at the Garlic Festival in Gilroy California, now this one.

The way its panning out they will need to put up signs at all stores and events that you enter at you own risk as there could be a mass shooting at anytime.
