I could not more strongly support the traditional rights of law abiding Americans to own and carry guns, they're an important part of our culture, but open carry makes absolutely no sense whatsoever to me.

Even working as a cop, whenever we left the police station, and unless we were in an appropriate place where we were known like a local restaurant, my weapon was covered by my suit jacket. My badge was also attached to my belt next to the gun. Off duty my gun never showed.

It's the nuts who go too far like this that will get gun control passed.

So what you are saying BB is that even though gunlocks exist, they are not being used in every instance?

I would have to agree with you, but also say if they were used, many accidents like you mentioned could be avoided.

America will never do away with the right to own firearms, but they do need to do a better job of educating those who own them. This is one of the known facts of owning a firearm in America.

Do not forget that Sarah Palin lives in Alaska where firearms are needed for survival. In order to know how to use one, a person must practice. Sarah Palin probably knows more about gun possesion than most Americans and definitely more than many who are posting on this thread.

I think I touched upon this on another thread. There is an issue with guns, too many people are dying. At the very least you need stronger local level gun checks, gun training checks, gun safety checks, gun education, etc - this would, you'd hope, dramatically reduce the amount of people killed in 'accidents'. Why isn't this being done? It's criminal. If the authorities issue people with gun permits and allow them to buy guns, then the same authority must be under a legal obligation to enforce gun education, checks and training, etc.
    Cycling should be banned!!!

That's a real stretch. I very much doubt that Alaskans need firearms to survive.

    Have you ever been there?

I have I grew up on fishing boats. It would be pretty stupid to not have a sidearm.

Come on Davis, have you ever been up there? I am not talking about Anchorage either. I have fished up there for years and the guides will always have a weapon with them. I would hate to be walking down to the dock and meet a brown bear face to face without one.

I have talked to many Alaskans who have friends either killed or severly maimed by brown bears. If you do not think Alaskans need firearms to survive, just go talk to some of them who are living up there. Better yet go live in the Alaskan bush without any kind of firearm.

There were fewer than 20 fatal bear attacks in Alaska in the past 50 years.

That is because Alaskans carry firearms and shoot the bastards before they are eaten.

^Certainly looks like a rifle pointed at her head, Rick. Are you claiming it's been photoshopped?

Just stating that unless you were there, how can you know where the rifle was pointed, or if there was even a rifle kying on the bear. Camera angle alone can make things appear different than the real event.

Where did this pic come from anyway? Maybe there is a better copy.

I've watched every episode of Deadliest Catch and them fishermen don't wear a sidearm.

You're dealing in extremes. Yes, if you live outside of town, chances are you might want to have a rifle laying around the house.

From wiki "More than half of the state's population lives in Anchorage, Juneau and Fairbanks, with two-fifths in Anchorage alone. " Somehow I'm doubting there's many bear attacks in Anchorage.

Like everything else, there's a time and place.

So you dont think Alaskans who live in Anchorage own firearms? What have you been drinking? Do you think they all stay in the city limits to avoid bear encounters?

It sounds like you need to go look for yourself and understand what Alaskan life is like.

Also, all fisherman carry firearms in Alaska. I carried one when I was just fishing in the streams. To walk around Alaska without one is a death wish.

FYI- over half the residents of Anchorage own firearms (google it).

    It's her picture FFS.
She sent it to Piers Morgan after he diss'd her on twitter.
    Google it.
Doesn't matter what the camera angle is, it's pointed in her general direction if not right between her eyes.

Do you think New Yorkers should pack firearms in case there's a Texan in town? Or if they travel to the wilds outside of the big apple, they should be packing in case they run into a black bear?

Who cares, it's not like its going to cause any brain damage if the gun's trigger is pulled by a ghost.

New York, Alaska. Again not talking apples to apples. A very sick and poor analogy IMO.
