SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WICS/WRSP) — We think of backpacks as something that carries our books, but now companies are adding safety features in light of school shootings and you don’t have to travel far to grab one off the shelf.


“They go through a lot of rigorous testing to make sure the child should be safe,” General Manager of Office Depot on Wabash Avenue Kevin Pologurto said about the two different bulletproof backpacks they carry. One of the brands is Guard Dog. “They're bullet-resistant for 9mm and .44 caliber.”

Each backpack is tested with five shots from a handgun.

“Each backpack comes with a report card of it so you know that it's been tested, you know that it's safe,” Pologurto said.

9 dead, 16 injured in Dayton, Ohio shooting . . .

"Nine people are dead after shooting incident in Dayton, Ohio, according to police. Dayton Police say the suspect in the incident also is dead. Sixteen additional people were injured in the incident.Miami Valley Hospital communications department Terrea Little said the hospital received 16 victims from the Dayton shooting. She would not characterize the injuries.
Elizabeth Long, spokeswoman at Kettering Health Network, which operates several Dayton area hospitals including Kettering Medical Center and Grandview Medical Center tells CNN that they are treating multiple victims in the ER from the shooting. She was not able to give specific numbers or specific hospital name of where patients are being treated.
Dayton Police previously said via Twitter that were "investigating an active shooter incident" in the city's Oregon District and asked residents to avoid the area."

There just doesn't seem to be a number of deaths big enough to dissuade many Americans that the right to bear arms is not worth the price. The number of Presidents alone that have been killed or injured are akin to a third world country.
