Apologies for the interrupt in your argument with Mr Earl but I believe assault rifle and assault weapon are slightly different. The latter has a shorter barrel and is normally referred to as a carbine, lighter and easier to handle than a rifle but not as accurate at longer ranges.

To add to the confusion the AR-15 comes in rifle and carbine lengths, the latter being a true assault weapon. The difference is about 4" in length so which was used in the shooting?

Let's just stick to the important point, shall we?

It is a semi-automatic version of the United States military M16 rifle.

Apart from being the weapon of choice for the successful mass shooter, its only other purpose is so that tiny-dicked wannabe non-entities like Mr. Earl can run around pretending they're like a proper soldier.

The US has 30 times as many guns as Thailand. It probably has 30 times as many mass shootings. The most recent in Thailand was eight months ago.

You all have missed the boat on your definitions. It's the US, only definitions that matter are the legal ones. Assault rifle laws are up to the states. Means there could be 50 different definitions. Practical jargon, military grade makes it an assault weapon, pistol grip and a magzine makes it a asault rifle.

It is also quite clear how it could have been prevented.

The failures lay with the education system itself and how Federal and local law enforcement responded to the threats. Which were what was indeed utterly shocking!

Seaside High teacher accidentally fires gun in class, students injured

SEASIDE, Calif. —A teacher who also serves as a reserve police officer accidentally fired a gun inside a Seaside High School classroom Tuesday, police said, and three students were injured.
Dennis Alexander was teaching a course about gun safety for his Administration of Justice class when his gun went off at 1:20 p.m.

Alexander was pointing his gun at the ceiling when it fired. Pieces of the ceiling fell to the ground.

A news release from the Seaside Police Department said no one suffered "serious injuries." One 17-year-old boy suffered moderate injuries when fragments from the bullet ricocheted off the ceiling and lodged into his neck, the student's father, Fermin Gonzales, told KSBW.

The teacher had just told the class that he wanted to make sure his gun wasn't loaded, when the gun fired, according to Gonzales.

"It's the craziest thing. It could have been very bad," Gonzales said

Everyone in the classroom was stunned, and the teacher, who is a reserve officer for the Sand City Police Department, apologized.

But no one at the school checked to make sure that all of the students were uninjured, Gonzales said. The school day resumed as normal, and Seaside Police Department officers launched an investigation.

The 17-year-old boy's parents were shocked when he returned home with blood on his shirt and bullet fragments in his neck. The student's parents rushed him to a hospital for X-rays.

"He's shaken up, but he's going to be OK," Gonzales told KSBW. "I'm just pretty upset that no one told us anything and we had to call the police ourselves to report it."

Students across the country are planning mass walkouts Wednesday to mark one month since the high school shooting in Parkland, Fla., and to demand an end to gun violence.
The students will walk out of classrooms at 10 a.m. across time zones for 17 minutes to show solidarity for the 17 killed in the Valentine's Day attack at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School and to make a nationwide appeal for changes in gun legislation.
Students at more than 2,800 schools and colleges have signed up to participate, according to Women’s March Youth EMPOWER, which is helping students coordinate the events.
Organizers are urging students at all schools, from elementary schools to universities, to take part. Even parents, teachers and others are encouraged to walk out of their jobs at 10 a.m.
School walkouts are planned throughout the U.S. and as far as Australia, the United Kingdom and Germany. Students in the Washington, D.C., area are scheduled to march from the White House to the U.S. Capitol, where Democratic lawmakers will walk out and join them.

Wednesday's walkouts will mark the first in a series of events in March and April organized by students across the nation as part of the #NeverAgain movement. Another walkout is scheduled on April 20 to mark the 19th year since the Columbine High School massacre.
A massive rally dubbed March For Our Lives is planned March 24 in Washington. The event is expected to attract 500,000 people and has spurred sister marches in every state.
