Sell your crap. Pay your debt. Do what you love.

I think this is intended more for those living in the West than those of us in LOS on this forum - but some of us here on the board were "where" this guy is talking about back in the West.

In 2008, after the birth of his first child, Baker and his wife decided to sell everything they owned, pay off their consumer debt, and spend a year traveling abroad as a family. They began sharing their journey in early 2009 on the blog Man vs. Debt, now 15000 subscribers strong. In sharing their ups and downs in the areas of personal finance, consumerism, clutter, travel, minimalism, and passionate entrepreneurship, they realized they aren't alone in a desire to explore and grow.

Selling off the "stuff" and moving on from the suck-the-life-out-of-you job and lifestyle I once had was the best thing ever. So many old friends could not fathom why someone would do such a thing.

There is a very funny Albert Brooks movie about a couple who did this, Lost in America. Doesn't end well for them, though.

Yeah, I got to the point where the computer screen at work kept saying "You are dead," so I figured it was time to do something in order to live life. Had lots of "stuff" but so what. Ran across this quote and it resonated......

P { margin-bottom: 0.08in; } "What if the spell of a place falls upon a youthful heart, and the bright horizon calls!
Many a thing will keep till the world's work is done, and youth is only a memory.
When the old enchanter came to my door, laden with dreams, I reached out with both hands. For I know that he would not be lured with the gold that I might offer later, when age had come upon me."

That's not so bad, unless your job was testing these:

My screen at work says "You are dead" often too. Perhaps I shouldn't play so many computer games in the office but it's the only place I can get some peace and quiet.

I feel the same way. "Stuff" and "things" are a burden to me.

I sold my things in storage a few years ago: furniture, lawn mower, dining room table, etc.

Everything I own can be fitted into two suitcases/large bags. It's mostly clothes.

I save and spend on experiences. The rest is in the bank. The world is mine.

Several times in my life i have sold up and moved on.

Then shit accumulates again, each time by accident, but each time less meaningful than the time before.

I don't do debt anymore - not even credit cards.

Happy to know i don't need much, and can get by.

Had lots of toys, but my backpack was always in the corner, couldn't carry it, you couldn't own it.
57 now, a backpack is still in the corner.

I am taking a stint in the US.

    Is that bad? No.

Why? Because it depends on the circumstances.

I have a FICO (credit score) of 811. Job. 0 debt.

I will save, not much, but I will save (and I brought My Asian savings with me).

And yes, I will return to Asia (or somewhere else) in 2 years - IF - I choose to.

    It's about choice.

    The....world....is....mine.

Don't really have much "stuff" of value, nothing that couldn't be left behind and for all the other stuff of sentimental value, kept with friends/family.

Don't have any debt aside from incoming household bills - never had a loan, never had a credit card, everything I own is bought and paid for. I'm a "live within my means" type of person, not an "aspirational wanker buying things I can't afford on the never never" type of person.

So yeah, I could jack my job tomorrow, sell my few saleable possessions and do what I love - namely travelling the world, spending my hard-earned wisely on wine, women and song. But, and it's a big but, once I'd burned through my savings I'd be back at square one.

I'm at the stage of life, early thirties, where I need to be building my nest egg in order to pursue my future dreams. I've already had a good go on the swings in Asia during the prime of my youth, I've already chucked everything out to up sticks to the other side of the world.

Don't regret it, best experience of my life, but with hindsight it set me back in my "real" life plans a bit. Nose to the grindstone time for me, has been for the last few years, but my eye is always on the future. 5,10,20 year plans...

At some stage, once I'm financially set and comfortable, I shall say "Fuck this" and go off on my merry way, riding into the sunset to pastures new.

Until then, I intend to graft my fucking nuts off to save for my own future. Fuck working until I'm 70 for a pittance of a state pension!

Just weird to be talking as if you're a wayfaring adventurer at this point.

    But, like I said...

I am debt free. Option exist.

On another note, although I like TD, I probably will take a break from all Asian forums because I am starting up here in the US and want to get my head mentally "here," if that makes sense.

Emulating this dude? Reality is different. Life is not a movie. When you're old and pissing dust and have nothing you will no doubt look back and think 'What the funk was I thinking?'

We don't need "things" or "stuff" when we are old.

    We will however need.....money.

Stuff is not money nor are things investments.
