Putin holds all the aces in a proxy war, gone horribly wrong for West

West is forced to negotiate with Russia after three months of latter’s intervention in Ukraine to get rid of Ukronazis and creeping NATO’s footsteps on its doors.

Frankly, there is no option left for West.

It can’t force a showdown with Russia despite billions of aids and arms supply to Kiev for if it does, Vladimir Putin would turn the oil and gas taps dry to Europe which would plunge the Old Continent into darkness, cars into garages, transport mode on to rusting tracks etc.

It would force the manufacturing giants like BMW or Bayer to either shut down or locate themselves out of Europe, either way causing a massive unemployment and public unrest which would force regime changes from Berlin to Paris to Geneva, you name it.

Europe is in no position to get rid of Russia’s energy supplies. The typical diesel blend which Russia provides and for which Europe’s processing units are accordingly oriented, can’t be replaced overnight.

Even if the West tries, and it is trying, the Middle East like Qatar or Oman can’t make up for the deficit of nearly 40% of Europe’s energy need if Russia was to turn off the tap tomorrow.

Besides, why would Middle East turn its back on its traditional customers and shift to new European clients for oversupply of oil and gas comes with its own cost: What if traditional customer shift en masse to Russia in the meantime?

And that’s not all. Where are the shipping tankers or logistics of transportation and storage, not to say the new skilled workers—and technology—which would be required to make the Russia-minus energy workable for the Europeans?

As it is, the cost of energy has risen three-fold in Europe which continues to buy oil from Grazprom to the tune of $200 million per day, and that too in Rubles, the currency they wished to destroy in baiting the Russian bear on Ukraine.

Now Rubles is doing better than ever, after initially dropping to pennies against the US dollars—it has jumped 40% against Dollar since January— and the pain of economic sanctions are actually beginning to be felt in the Western capitals. Inflation is going through the roof and popular unrest is brewing.

Energy prices in the EU and America have spiked to 40-year highs; recession is staring in eye; supply lines have sunk, food shortages are stark and gas-oil prices are going through the roof.

Meanwhile, the current-account surplus for Russia this year could be at $250 billion which would be more than double the $120 billion measured in 2021. From gas sales alone, Russia could earn a record $100 billion from European countries in 2022 as energy prices have risen painfully high and its gas sales would be almost twice as much as last year. And all this when one is not taking into account the profits from the sale of other Russian commodities, such as oil, coal and other minerals.

    What Putin Wants

And this situation isn’t going to change at least till the year-end by when one Mr Putin would hold all the cards and press with his long-standing demand of NATO going back to its 1997 level.

That was the year when West had repeatedly assured a post-Soviet Union Russia that NATO wouldn’t expand eastwards but completely did otherwise to the extent that out of the 27 European Union (EU) states, 21 are in NATO today.

Russia has made no secret of what it wants: That NATO returns to its 1997 levels and a collective security is in place for nations of the European continent.

Instead, West chose to bait Russia on Ukraine with constant needling while the Moscow kept repeating it would intervene militarily which it did. Put in Russia’s shoes, would the United State allow its neighbourhood of Cuba, Nicaragua etc armed to the teeth with nuclear-missile launchpads? NO.

That’s why I said West is now looking for a settlement and call for negotiations would now make headlines in the mainstream media, captive as it is to its Western masters.

The truth is, sanctions have failed, and instead of Rubles it’s the Dollars which is losing its hegemony world over.

Countries are now trading in mutual currencies and before the year is out, Russia would have floated a commodity-based exchange currency system which would resonate around the world.

The US dollars, supported by multilateral global institutions, would be bypassed by the world for two reasons: One, why trust a currency which already is in a kind of debt it could not repay; and Two, who is to trust a Superpower which one fine morning could seize your assets and reserves with the Western banks?

The truth remains that the Western sanctions have failed; Russia’s Rubles is in pink health; and Ukraine has disintegrated. There is no sign of a popular rising in Moscow which the West had hoped for in getting rid of Mr Putin. Indeed, the Russian strongman holds all the aces presently.

The only face-saving measure, as I said, is for the West to negotiate for a settlement between Kiev and Moscow. But they have missed the moment. Russia is winning the war and there’s no way West could stop it. That’s the ugly truth.

Given how Ukraine-2 could crop up on Russia’s border in a decade’s time, Russia wouldn’t settle for anything less than NATO back to 1997 levels. As for the territories ceded in form of Crimea, Donbass and those with access to Black Sea, Ukraine can do little but accept that it has been reduced to a strip of land.

It has been a disaster all the way for them. And the West.

Come on sabang, you source Ashish Shukla, is forgetful. Did you not point out to him/her that:

"arry informed us, some months ago, that Germany had signed an energy supply contract with a Middle East country.

    Surely "arry wasn't mistaken?

Allegedly, the SMO is being increasingly printed below the fold in many media outlets.

NaGastan's top diplomat has confirmed "it's up to Ukraine" not the "USA or EU".

The agreement was signed during the ministerial meeting of the East Med Gas Forum (EMGF).
“With this EU-Egypt-Israel agreement we will work on the stable delivery of natural gas to the EU from the East Med region,” Ursula von der Leyen, President of the EU Commission tweeted on Wednesday.

Telephone conversation with President of China Xi Jinping

Vladimir Putin had a telephone conversation with President of the People's Republic of China Xi Jinping during which the two leaders had an in-depth exchange of views on a wide range of issues on the bilateral and international agendas.

    June 15, 2022 16:00

"The presidents stated that Russian-Chinese relations were at an all-time high and are constantly improving. They reaffirmed their commitment to consistently deepen the comprehensive partnership and strategic interaction in all areas.

The current state of and prospects for trade and economic cooperation, the volume of which is expected to reach record high levels in 2022, were reviewed in detail. It was agreed to expand cooperation in energy, finance, the manufacturing industry, transport and other areas, taking into account the global economic situation that has become more complicated due to the illegitimate sanctions policy pursued by the West. The further development of military and defence ties was touched upon as well.

During the discussion of the situation in the international arena, it was emphasised that Russia and China, as before, have overlapping or very close positions, consistently uphold the fundamental principles of international law, seek to build a truly multipolar and fair system of international relations. The parties confirmed their mutual commitment to improve coordination and mutual support in various multilateral formats, including at the UN. The importance of cooperation within the SCO and BRICS was underscored, in particular, in the context of the upcoming BRICS summit to be hosted by the Chinese presidency on June 23–24.

Vladimir Putin laid out his principled assessment of the situation in Ukraine and the tasks being tackled during the special military operation. The President of China noted the legitimacy of Russia’s actions to protect fundamental national interests in the face of challenges to its security created by external forces.
It was agreed to continue bilateral contacts both at the heads of state level and through various ministries and agencies.

The conversation was held in a traditionally warm and friendly atmosphere."

    Well done the cloggies.

ON JUNE 16, THE Dutch General Intelligence and Security Service (AIVD) announced that it prevented a Russian military intelligence officer from gaining access as an intern to the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague. The ICC is of interest to the GRU because it investigates possible war crimes committed by Russia in the Russo-Georgian War of 2008 and more recently in Ukraine.
The GRU officer reportedly traveled from Brazil to Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam in April 2022, using a Brazilian cover identity, making him a so-called “illegal”. This means the intelligence operative was not formally associated with a Russian diplomatic facility. He allegedly planned to start an internship with the ICC, which would have given him access to the ICC’s building and systems. This could have enabled the GRU to collect intelligence, spot and recruit sources, and possibly influence criminal proceedings inside the ICC.

An interview by a Russian speaking BBC employee, based in Moscow.

Lavrov: Russia is not squeaky clean and not ashamed

    By Steve Rosenberg
    Russia Editor, Moscow

"Since the Russian army attacked Ukraine nearly four months ago, thousands of civilians have been killed and whole towns reduced to rubble, while millions of Ukrainians have fled their homes.

But on Thursday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov looked me in the eye and told me things were not as they seemed.

"We didn't invade Ukraine," he claimed.

"We declared a special military operation because we had absolutely no other way of explaining to the West that dragging Ukraine into Nato was a criminal act."

Since Russia invaded Ukraine on 24 February, Mr Lavrov has given only a few interviews to Western media.

He repeated the official Kremlin line that there were Nazis in Ukraine. Russian officials often claim that their military is "de-Nazifying" the country. Mr Lavrov caused uproar recently when he tried to justify the Nazi slur regarding Ukraine's president, who is Jewish, by making the ridiculous claim that Adolf Hitler had "Jewish blood".

I quoted to him an official United Nations report about the Ukrainian village of Yahidne, in Chernihiv region, which states that "360 residents, including 74 children and five persons with disabilities, were forced by Russian armed forces to stay for 28 days in the basement of a school… There were no toilet facilities, water…10 older people died".

"Is that fighting Nazis?" I asked.

"It's a great pity," Mr Lavrov said, "but international diplomats, including the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, the UN Secretary-General and other UN representatives, are being put under pressure by the West. And very often they're being used to amplify fake news spread by the West."

"Russia is not squeaky clean. Russia is what it is. And we are not ashamed of showing who we are."

Mr Lavrov, 72, has represented Russia on the international stage for the past 18 years, but Western sanctions have now been imposed on both him and his daughter.

The US has accused him of pursuing a false narrative of Ukraine as the aggressor, and of direct responsibility for Russia's invasion as a member of its Security Council.

I then turned to Russian relations with the UK. It is on Russia's official list of unfriendly countries, and I suggested that to say relations were bad was an understatement.

"I don't think there's even room for manoeuvre any more," Mr Lavrov told me, "because both [Prime Minister Boris] Johnson and [Liz] Truss say openly that we should defeat Russia, we should force Russia to its knees. Go on, then, do it!"

It was last month that the UK foreign secretary said Russia's Vladimir Putin was humiliating himself on the world stage and that "we must ensure he faces a defeat in Ukraine".

When I asked Mr Lavrov how he viewed the UK now, he said it was "once again sacrificing the interests of its people for the sake of political ambitions".

I asked him about two British men recently sentenced to death by Russian separatists in occupied eastern Ukraine.

When I pointed out that in the eyes of the West, it was Russia that was responsible for their fate, he responded:

"I am not interested in the eyes of the West at all. I am only interested in international law. According to international law, mercenaries are not recognised as combatants."

I replied that the men had served in the Ukrainian armed forces and were not mercenaries, and Mr Lavrov said that should be decided by a court.

He then accused the BBC of not uncovering the truth of what had been happening to civilians in separatist-held areas of eastern Ukraine, "when civilians were being bombed by Kyiv's troops for eight years".

I stressed that over the course of six years, the BBC had many times contacted the leadership in the separatist-run areas asking for permission to go and see what was happening. We were refused entry every single time.

Russia has accused Ukraine of genocide. However, in 2021, eight civilians were killed in the rebel-held areas, according to self-proclaimed pro-Russian "officials", and seven the year before. While every death was a tragedy, I said, that did not constitute a genocide.

I suggested that if genocide really had taken place, then the Luhansk and Donetsk separatists would have been interested in us going there. Why were we not let in, I asked.

"I don't know," said Mr Lavrov."

There is also a video of the discussion here, English subs as both speak Russian:

Data suggests 15,000 millionaires trying to leave Russia – UK ministry

Data suggests thousands of millionaires are trying to leave Russia, and a continued exodus of its business and oligarch community will likely exacerbate the war’s long-term damage to its economy, Britain’s defence ministry said on Friday.

“Migration applications suggest that 15,000 Russian millionaires are likely already attempting to leave,” the ministry said.

On the war front, Russia is likely trying to regain momentum in attempts to surround the Sievierodonetsk pocket from the south, it said.

Ukrainian officials have said their troops were holding out against massive Russian bombardment in the eastern city, and described new progress in a counteroffensive in the south.

It appears that there is a specific Russian government department keeping an eye on, and collating, NaGaStan Crimes Against Humanity.

Statement of the Joint Coordination Headquarters of the Russian Federation for Humanitarian Response

    (June 25, 2022)

"The Russian Federation's Joint Coordination Headquarters for Humanitarian Response, in coordination with designated federal executive authorities and law enforcement, continues to carefully record the facts of the inhumane treatment of civilians and use of residential buildings, educational institutions, kindergartens and other social infrastructure facilities for military purposes by Ukrainian armed groups:

    1. In Konstantinovka, Donetsk People's Republic, in the kindergarten №15 (Slavyanskaya st.), units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) have deployed a strongpoint, firing and sniper positions around the perimeter, the approaches to the building are mined, while the local population has been intentionally left uninformed about it;
    2. In Zaporozhye, in the culture hall of motor works (Soborny ave.), militants of Ukrainian armed groups have deployed barracks, a strongpoint, armament depots, armoured hardware and multiple rocket-launching systems (MRLS);
    3. In Nikolayev, in the kindergarten №52 (Parusny ln.), in the special medical attention base and the club (Geroyev Ukrainy st.), neo-Nazis have deployed armament, munitions and fuel depots, as well as large-calibre artillery guns in a densely populated area of Solyanyie neighbourhood. Residents are forbidden to leave their flats, while any attempts of civilians to evacuate to safe areas are severely suppressed.
    4. In Pervomayskoye, Kharkov region, in the vocational lyceum (Rassvetnaya st.), militants of nationalist groups have deployed an armament and munitions depot, AFU units in the residence of the educational institution, as well as long-range artillery at the adjacent territory. At the same time, residents of the nearby buildings had not been evacuated.

Despite the fact that this criminal action can result in causing victims among civilians, the militants of the Ukrainian armed groups, launch deliberate attacks from residential areas, at the positions of the units of Russian Armed Forces and People's Militia of the Donetsk People's Republic, in order to provoke their counter-attack and to accuse them of the consequences from allegedly indiscriminate attacks ...."
