How do they know it went down in the Ocean? I read it was in the air for 2 hours when they last had contact. That would put it over Vietnam would it not?
Even if it came apart through an explosion you would have thought that debris would be found floating. I remember several years ago when the stock markets crashed the co-pilot of an asian airline found out he had lost everything and committed suicide by diving the plane into the ocean?
If a plane breaks up at 35 000ft the debris will be scattered over a huge area.
I highly doubt the plane dived into the ocean otherwise they would have had time to make a mayday. As I said before there could be a really absurd explanation for all of this like someone got into the cockpit and dived the plane which left both pilots fighting for control and could not make a mayday call OR both pilots for some reason were out of their seats and the plane dived.

The Vietnamese navy originally reported that it had crashed in their waters......and later they report that two large oil slicks have been spotted, but no debris... but.consistent with the spillage from two fuel tanks. The last radar contact would also place it over water.

Malaysia's The Star has this graphicPETALING JAYA: Sweden-based flight tracking service FlightRadar24 was the first to report that Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 had disappeared from radar about 50 minutes of departure, and not two hours as initially stated.
"Flight #MH370 took off from Kuala Lumpur at 1641 UTC time (12.41am local time) and disappeared from Flightradar24.com - Live flight tracker! at 1720 UTC time (about 1.21am local time) between Malaysia and Vietnam," said the company’s chief executive officer Fredrik Lindahl in an e-mail response to The Star.
"Also, based on our data, there is no doubt that the last reported position of MH370 is about 150km northeast of Kuala Terengganu.
"We have good radar coverage in the area the flight went missing and the last signal was received from an altitude of 35,000 feet," said Lindahl.
About all they can say is, "They don't know where it is or why it disappeared". They have not ruled out terrorism. At this point no one knows. Another possibility is this very aircraft had a "minor" incident at Pudong airport. Wingtip damage was repaired. If the collision stressed the wing structure, could cause wing to fall off.Originally Posted by bangkokbonecollector

Malaysia Airlines’ Boeing 777-200ER registration 9M-MRO which was performing the ill-fated flight MH370 earlier this morning was involved in a minor accident about 20 months ago. On August 9, 2012 its wing-tip crashed in to the tail of a China Eastern Airlines A340-600 aircraft and broke-off as per reports in the aviation safety network and Shanghai Daily. The incident occurred at Shanghai Pudong airport, China.

They haven't ruled out anything, apart from alien abduction.
The press are being disgusting as usual. Pity the poor families.
Shoving cameras in the faces of the victims' (?) families. Totally disgraceful behaviour.Originally Posted by harrybarracuda

The identities of two other passengers are being investigated by Malaysian authorities
Its the 9 th today .
Depends on where you are talking about...
The point was that the AC departed KL just after midnight on Mar 8th local time, and vanished about an hour later.....the departure time happens to be about 8am local time in Los Angles on Mar 7th.....and that is why somebody seemed to think that the LA Times was reporting on something that had not happened yet.

Now some reports that the plane may have doubled back. Search area widened. (BBC NEWS)
(CNN) -- Mystery still envelops the fate of Malaysia Airlines Flight 370, the passenger jet missing in Southeast Asia since early Saturday.
Malaysian military officials said Sunday that the plane might have turned back before it disappeared. Authorities are investigating the identities of some of those on board who appear to have been traveling with stolen passports.

The Lockerbie bombing produced wreckage over a 2000 kmē area. The Lauda air incident, which caused the wing to detach produced a wreckage pattern of 1kmē and the pieces were about half the size. The AF accident left a small wreckage area as well.
I would have expected a mid-air explosion to have shown up something by now, as long as they are looking in roughly the right area.
I learned of this apparent disaster on reading the Melbourne Herald/Sun and Brisbane Courier Mail online earlier this morning. They also reported the two passengers travelling on passports stolen here in Thailand.....I wondered with all the electronic information shared how this could possibly happen. They also stated that when the Aircraft lost contact with base the nearest aircraft to where it should have been was told to try to contact the missing plane for information. I think it was a Vietnam place and did actually get contact but it the Viet pilot reported that what he heard was very static and voices were mumbled....Not sure what this can mean or add to the conversation
