I knew a guy in the time share business with a stolen passport- couldn't use his own because he had been thrown out of too many countries. Drug dealers & smugglers also might have several passports. Many reasons why people might have dodgy passports, not necessarily terrorism related.

The Air France disaster was basically the result of inadequate crew training. The chief pilot had left the cockpit for a break when the airspeed indicators started acting up. The AC went into a high altitude stall and they made several critical errors trying to correct it. The plane went into an uncontrollable dive and hit the water at high speed. The investigation showed that this lack of pilot training/skill was not uncommon these days as the planes are so automated and almost bullet proof, they don't really need it......until one day they need it......

Yep. In the mean time speculation is rife. Everything from a wing ripped off to alien abduction is a possibility.

Sounds like they need to make pilot training and skill 'common'.

they were at 35 000 feet , the plane would have been on auto pilot

Yes, but so was the Air France plane. The problem started when the air speed indicator went nuts. The pilots disengaged the auto-pilot to make "corrections"...and the resulting errors sent the plane straight into the Atlantic at 600 kmph......

We have no idea at this stage what happened to the AM plane. Obviously terrorists are a possibility, so is crew error, so is catastrophic system failure....or maybe something completely new. There is no data available....and as Sherlock once said to Watson....."To speculate without data is a capital mistake"

Presumably the search is on for the black box, as well as locating any survivors (unlikely)- I don't think the ocean is particularly deep where it went down.

Not deep. 30 to 70 meters. Should be relitively easy to find and even raise most of the crash debris.

But would it be legal? The CVR is on a 2-hour loop and is available to investigations following an incident. Anything else would be eavesdropping.

As for old tech...maybe but remember that it has to withstand impact, fire, water and anything else that happens in a crash and still be able to playback the "Holy Fcuk" just before impact.
If the data is sent securely in real time, there would be no need for a 'bomb-proof' black box.

A lady on CNN just made a very good point that someone with a stolen passport would find it very difficult to gain entry to China. It begs the question whether the two persons with the stolen passports were ever planning to disembark that plane. She also said she had rarely seen persons with stolen passports on aviation incidents, let a lone two passengers.

So what do we have here:

    Two passengers with stolen passports
Plane traveling from a Muslim country with probable fundamentalist cells to China
Recent 'Islamic' fundamentalist attack in China
No May day call at 35 000ft
Possibly high altitude break up leading to vast area of debris which is why it is hard to find any debris right now.

I have never understood why planes do not carry live camera feeds, say three in the passenger area, 1 in the cockpit, one on the tail, one on each of the wings and one on the nose. All of these could feed and be streamed into which ever ATC.

    True.

All we can hope for is that the NSA kunts get strung up when the US collapses.

    That doesn't stop people trying.

Presumably the passports were good enough to get past the Malaysian Immigration staff when departing Malaysia. (I believe they have them like in Thailand)

are stolen and lost passports put on a worldwide database accessible to airports and immigration authorities?

Yes. Apparently in this case the check was not made.

Yes they are. As soon as the embassies get notification from the passport holder they are put on a worldwide Interpol database. If this was a bomb, they had inside help which is why it would have been easier for them to get on a Muslim plane in a Muslim country as they may have been able to get someone working on the inside. Conspiracy all conspiracy I know but I'm just putting it out there.

Good question. Interpol says it has a database with such information.

Stolen and Lost Travel Documents -- holds information on more than 39 million travel documents reported lost or stolen by 166 countries. This database enables INTERPOL National Central Bureaus and other authorized law enforcement entities (such as immigration and border control officers) to ascertain the validity of a suspect travel document in seconds.

one would think if they were traveling to China the would have had to apply for a VISA in ADVANCE.

Unless they were traveling VIA china to a 3rd destination, then no visa needed,
this is something they need to check

Many stolen Passports are not used for airplane travel but merely as identification ( example the time share guy)

Reason being they will not pass the immigration check

Do the immigration staff at departures in KL have cameras to take photos of people leaving the country like a Suvarnaphum airport in Thailand?

In the light of today's technology...EPIRBs, satellite imagery etc etc I suspect there are somebodies out there who already know the fate of this flight.

Find all this speculation by the the world's media etc somewhat ghoulish. See they have just released satellite imagery of 911!

Yea but they seem to be pretty slow in getting information out and indeed unwilling to.
