Congrats to Booners. He is balancing two contradictory versions of the shutdown; 1. It is a trivial non-event shutting down a small part of government and 2. A massive catastrophe forshadowing armed insurrection by the public.

Obamacare passed legislation many years ago, the president, congress, and senate all signed up. The Republican party exhausted all legal means to prevent the bill, including the complaint at the highest court of the country. In vain. Hence the unlawful shutdown of the government by the Republicans. Political terrorism as the last resort.

The Statist Media and a lot of folks on the Internet were showing the photo below of the disappointed child locked out of the National Zoo in Washington because of the government shut down.

The silly of it is they're losing more in revenue that supports these parks and the personnel that works in them then anything they're saving by shutting them down, they are mostly self sustaining to a point. Based on that, clearly it's about irritating the masses in an attempt to gain their support, problem is it is backfiring in a big way. Both sides are just trying the patience of the public and in the end will loose big time hopefully.

Half the GOP is driven by short sighted greed, a take the money and run type mentality. That's the better half. The other 'blue collar'/ teabag/ right wing populist end, is basically insane. Religious loonies, gun nuts, self styled libertarians who don't even know what that means, all backed up by a worrying undercurrent of racism.
I'm increasingly of the view that many if not most blue collar type republicans resolutely oppose policies that in most cases will directly benefit them- such as improving education, minimum wages, repealing the disastrous Bush 'tax cuts for the rich', and health care reform- because they fear it will benefit minorities, aka the soon to be majority. That will get them a long way in the 21st century, but there is no reasoning with these people- they'll just have to find out for themselves, as their party becomes more marginalised and irrelevent.

The US government has been shut down several times. What makes this shutdown different is that Barack Obama spent taxpayer dollars to erect barricades at national monuments to keep the American public out.
He wants Americans to know who the boss is.

Yep FB, real people are being affected- many worse than yourself. Spare a thought for international and domestic tourists too, and the people who's livelihoods rely on them. But of course those furloughed or laid off are suffering worse.

Until it's membership firmly reminds the gop that they are in the business of government- not boycotting it or shutting it down- this sort of thuggery may well raise it's ugly head again.

Serious question- with all of these people and the economy suffering, why are Congressmen still getting paid? They are not even at work.

In the past I've proposed that ALL government officials should be video camed like many of us are while on the job, they are, after all, OUR employees.. Excluding top secret meetings of course, but most of the mundane day to day stuff should be video'd and open to public review..
