Chuck Hagel's nomination for defence post approved by Senate committee

Republican critics continue attacks on former senator over positions on Iran and Israel and vow to delay full Senate vote.

President Barack Obama's choice to be his next defense secretary jumped a key hurdle on Tuesday as a Senate committee voted in favour of his nomination.
However, argument over the contentious choice of the former Nebraska Republican senator Chuck Hagel shows little sign of calming down.

The powerful Senate Armed Services Committee voted by 14 votes to 11 to recommend the nomination of Hagel, who has faced an intense grilling from the panel over a wide range of issues from his former Republican colleagues. He is aiming to replace the departing Pentagon chief Leon Panetta.

    Heh...only part of the reason.

Hagel is a dim bulb and as Cheney has stated, all the nominees Obama has trotted out are not Varsity players. Definitely second-rate candidates.

Thats a very pertinent point actually. Obama seems to select lobbyists, zionists and bankers for important positions.

Can we safely assume then that this is all a ruse, and when he is bounced out, some former executive from Northrop Grumman or Raytheon will be pushed into the job just in time for a land army attacking North Korea?

Not a done-deal yet, boys. The political capitol expended to get Hagel approved is proving to be much more than Slippery Harry Reid expected:

Sam Stein @samsteinhp Senate aide confirms, at this juncture, Reid doesn't have the 60 votes to move Hagel.

Moe Lane » Report: Chuck Hagel not at 60 to confirm.

Saw that on news this morning. Lot's of backroom horse trading going on for sure. A couple more votes will be found if Obama sends some of the info GOP requests about Benghazi. What happened in Benghazi has jack to do with Hagel but the GOP is using the issue to hold up Hagel's confirmation. The circus goes on.

I'm confused. The republicans are Israeli noshers then are they and not the democrats? I always get confused because both sides are on their knees sucking on Israel's balls all the time, but I thought the GOP sometimes say in public they don't like it, hence Hagel, who sees Israel as the warmongering country off hate that it is, would be a good choice.

(P.s....It is impossible for me to be an anti-semite before anyone get's the shits about these comments. Being Anti Israel is a common thing for members of a certain religion).

He's in booner, all over bar the shouting- just as sensible pundits have been saying all along. I find this very public bickering over government and judicial appointments quite demeaning and unnecessary actually, both parties are guilty.

Damaged goods or not, he still needs to respond to basic questions:

Senators Ask Hagel Whether the State Dept. Is Controlled By Israel.

Dear Senator Hagel," Senators Lindsey Graham and Kelly Ayotte write. "Yesterday, the Washington Free Beacon reported that in a 2007 speech at Rutgers University regarding America's relationship with the Middle East you remarked that 'the State Department was becoming an adjunct of the Israeli Foreign Ministry.' According to notes posted on the internet by a Republican political consultant and supporter of yours, George Ajjan, you made the remarks during the question and answer period following the speech."

Senators Ask Hagel Whether the State Dept. Is Controlled By Israel | The Weekly Standard

Kinda blows that 'Hagel isn't a tool of the anti-Israel crowd' argument out of the H2O, eh?

Funny how Condeleza Rice was confirmed for Secretary of State with little objection despite claiming that Sadam Hussein bought yellowcake uranium from Niger. Seems like a double-standard with senate Repubs.

Both parties suck up to Israel.

AIPAC is the "Jewish Lobby" and that is a fair label. Or, you can say "Israeli-Jewish Lobby."

There are many Jews throughout the US government. Some high ranking officials are even Israeli citizens (like Chertoff was).

As for the "anti-semitism" that is a label often thrown on anyone in the US who criticizes Israeli policies.

Abe Foxman of the ADL is the most common use of the term, it seems. He even calls Jews anti-semitic for critizing Israel.

Although it is a fact that the Palestinians are semites.

    It's USrael, unfortunately.

Bob Woodward: Democrats Asked White House to Pull Hagel Nomination

On FOX News Sunday this morning Bob Woodward said Democratic senators have called the White House asking if defense secretary nominee Chuck Hagel will withdraw his nomination."

It would seem that there are a few others who don't believe Hagel is the best choice for SecDev in these times.

It's not 'unnecessary' IMO. Reflects again what Cheney stated correctly the other day that these are second-rate people Obama is nominating. And, if you look beyond your preconceived liberal biases, you'll have to admit that is true.

All this indicates is Dem senators asked if Hagel will withdraw his nomination. Normal procedure in the Circus de D.C. prior to a vote. Had the Senators asked WH to withdraw his nomination then quite a different kettle of fish.

After Palin, these crazy Republicans have no room to judge anyone else's "qualifications" for any govt position.

When the latest set of revelations come out he will be obliged to withdraw his name or risk becoming a larger embarrassment to the Democrats. In a March 2007 speech at Rutgers University, Chuck Hagel said that the U.S. Department of State was an adjunct of the Israeli foreign minister’s office, according to a contemporaneous report of the event.

Additionally, we have more reports of Hagel's 'views' on Israel:
"I am sitting in a lecture by Chuck Hagel at Rutgers. He basically said that Israel has violated every UN resolution since 1967, that Israel has violated its agreements with the quartet, that it was risking becoming an apartheid state if it didn’t allow the Palestinians to form a state. He said that the settlements were getting close to the point where a contiguous Palestinian state would be impossible.
He said that he [thought] that Netanyahu was a radical and that even [former Israeli foreign minister Tzipi] Livni, who was hard nosed thought he was too radical and so wouldn’t join in a coalition [government] with him. … He said that Hamas has to be brought in to any peace negotiation.
Wagner is a pro-Israel activist. But there is no reason to believe that he would misrepresent Hagel’s statement in a contemporaneous account. To do so would be to rosl destroying his credibility with AIPAC, and for no reason — Hagel wasn’t in the picture at that time as a potential nominee."

Right, can't think of a single reason.
"He basically said". But what did he actually say?
