But you probably didn’t want to read /articles/news_a...snap_data.html anyway.

    By Greg Engel

You probably entered the URL http://www.slate.com/articles/news_a...snap_data.html thinking you were going to a witty, counterintuitive take on some current news topic. Instead you find yourself disappointed to be reading this 404 page, which means our system couldn’t retrieve the article you sought.
But this is actually great news. Did you really want to read whatever it was you were looking for? Let's face it: Whatever article you thought you were going to read, you had probably already anticipated the arguments in your head. Instead of reading it, you can just imagine what it was going to be like and get back to work. Look at all the time you've saved! In other words: you're welcome.

Of course, if you want to find some other interesting story to read, you can go to slate.com and see what else we’re dishing up."

The Slate is part & parcel of the Statist Media so the article was probably heavily biased anyway...

Here's a question for all you card-carrying members of the TDMA - why are we always being bombarded about how Social Security is running out of money but we never hear about Welfare & Food Stamps going broke, huh?

Poor Boontard, must be sucking on the FAUX news tit to think that SS is going to go broke. It's a tall tale oft repeated by the right wing sheeple who obviously have no understanding of how SS actually works.

The fact is that Social Security isn't going bankrupt, nor is bankruptcy really possible as the system is currently set up.

Here's the source of the confusion: Historically, Social Security has collected more than it paid out. The extra money built up in a trust fund that collects interest. But due to demographic and economic changes, it's expected that insurance payments will begin to exceed income in 2021. Around 2033, the fund will run out.

But even then, the revenue Social Security collects each year would still be enough to pay out about three-quarters of scheduled benefits as far as the eye can see.

    Source: Social Security Administration.

What would it take to make up for the shortfall? We only need to come up with about 0.9% of GDP in order to make Social Security's revenues match up with its expenses for the next 75 years. To put that into perspective, 0.9% is close to the cost of unemployment insurance, the high-end Bush tax cuts, or one-fifth of the Defense budget. That's not insignificant, but it's hardly apocalyptic.

Here's one for you - Rupert Murdoch is not a republican. He is not a right winger. He is a businessman who conspires to keep the masses doing exactly what government tells it to, which in turn is doing what he and his friends tell it to.

Fox is only a GOP in the US because it suit them. However, their real subject matter is only about stirring up hate for the other side just as the rest are there to stir up hate for GOP. They do no reporting; just spout the party line which is what most people here do. Their opinion pieces are written for them by the same people writing the politicians speeches. Why try play them off against each other and point score? There is very little factual on any of the networks.

Actually yes it is. The US debt is partially secured with the SS pot; it's been spent. So the funds themselves are effectively bankrupt the moment that the repayments stop.

Wanna preserve Social Security for generations to come?

Repeal the Bush tax cuts for the uber-rich, cut a bit from the defense budget and stop dishing out corporate welfare to profitable companies; problem solved

This is worthy of watching. As I've stated for the upteenth time, but individuals and families that truly need this support should get it - but not the fraudsters.

Good to see that the fraudsters are getting caught and prosecuted.

It's a travesty that in the wealthiest nation on the planet some ~47 million Americans are so poor that they had to rely on SNAP to put food on the table last year.

Let us not forget that 72 percent of SNAP participants are in families with children; more than one-quarter of participants are in households with seniors or people with disabilities.

In my hometown 2 months ago, I saw a women buy groceries with food stamps and get into a brand new Ford F-150 and drive off. No joke.

    Tony,

The point of this thread and the theme of my posts is that [i]Food Stamps (snap) has now become an entitlement program. Get as many people to qualify as possible.

^ Does this USDA ad offend you in some way?

The U.S. Department of Agriculture has been running radio ads for nearly 20 years encouraging those eligible to enroll. The campaign are targeted at the elderly, working poor, the unemployed and Hispanics.

These ads are an attempt to educate citizens of their rights and they started running back in 2004 when GW Bush, the fella who is largely responsible for the Great Recession, was President.

Food stamp enrollment certainly shot up during the Great Recession, though it has been rising for more than a decade.

President Bush launched the original Food Stamp recruitment campaign, which pushed average participation up by 63% during his eight years in office. The USDA began airing paid radio spots in 2004.

Did it bother you when these ads were running under Dubya?

Citizens don't witness the fraud. It takes investigators and informants.

Not sure what you point or question is about.

I did not imply the F-150 food stamper was about fraud. Again, it's about the expanded entitlement.

A news item this morning says that not all foods that go past their sell-by dates are not necessarily BAD for you.
Even though they may not taste so good they are still eatable and will not make you sick.
    wtf. is going on now.
Having to feed kids with dodgy grub. The left-overs in the market.

Well it's true, for a start. However what is going on is they are, as Barbaro says, getting as many people as possible onto food stamps etc. Then, when election time comes around, with the GOP saying they would reign them in and get people off the food stamps, the democrips will say to the millions only surviving with foodstamps and the others enjoying them that if GOP took control, they would starve. Who will win the election?

It is scandalous, and exactly the same as the rice pledging scheme in Thailand.

Indeed. Scandal or just a result of corporate power in the US. Either way, it helps the party who promises to give the most away for free who are happy to continue and start wars but not force their sponsors to pay a decent wage that matches the inflation that has been created by their other backers.

The real scandal is that the Republican Party, as part of their ongoing war against the poor, continues to vote down every attempt to raise the minimum wage. Most recently:

House Republicans Unanimously Vote Down Minimum Wage Increase

A proposal by Rep. George Miller (D-Calif.) to raise the federal minimum wage to $10.10 an hour over the next two years and increase the wage for tipped employees to 70 percent of the minimum wage was defeated, with every House Republican voting against the motion. On the Democratic side, six lawmakers voted against the measure, and 184 Democrats voted for it.
