    "bible-thumper" and "bible-basher", Jet.

Look it up in a dictionary or read ray's quote.

OK, OK, it might not have been Gorbachev himself that physically ripped the bricks asunder but it was under his direction the wall came down:

"Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!"

"On June 12, 1987, President Ronald Reagan spoke the people of West Berlin at the base of the Brandenburg Gate, near the Berlin wall. Due to the amplification system being used, the President's words could also be heard on the Eastern (Communist-controlled) side of the wall. The address Reagan delivered that day is considered by many to have affirmed the beginning of the end of the Cold War and the fall of communism. On Nov. 9-11, 1989, the people of a free Berlin tore down that wall."

"Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!"

Wasn't the wall torn down by the German people in the wake of East-Germany's overthrow of the Soviet puppet regime?

Actually, the Pope deserves more credit than Reagan for encouraging East-German dissent.

A lot of uneducated people, is that "many"?
    affirmed the beginning....

More important than Reagans speach was Erich Honeckers resignation and loss of grip of Stasi.
Or if you want to go longer back in time, the death of Brezhnev.

^ some people would rather believe that it was all because of a speech given by an aging actor with alzheimer's.

you see, it's easier that way.

    I agree with Stroll.

The Pope is not given enought credit by many Americans.

Reagan was one piece of a big puzzle.

The USSR basically self-imploded. The economy of the Soviet Union started declining at least by 1960 and the US knew it.

The CCCP was producing products that no one wanted to buy or use, and they also had waste, corruption/graft and inflation.

Reagan was one of many factors. But he wasn't the main factors.

I don't understand how people oversimply so easily.

Ahh...but he was the straw that broke the back. Go ahead and claim Breznev, the implotation of the Stasi etc but it was Reagan's speech that gave the German people the will to actually to the deed.

Oh boy, you have no idea how much that senile actor was despised in Germany.

He's responsible for riots and the underground being torched in protest of his visit, not the Berlin wall.

You can keep that for the American history book.
And it will be an easy task for coming European generations to take the piss out of the Americans.
Reagans speech was insignificant but I'll give him A+ for good timing.

Do you really believe in what you're writing Booners?

Mods! Mods! Thought double posts were verbotten?

It's really not my inclination to feed a Troll such as yourself RC but I'll be brief:

Before the speech = no action.

    After the speech = action.

Do try to pay attention - there's a good lad...

Yep, asking someone to back up their claims is trolling, no doubt.
Still, you are wrong, Boon Mee.

Brief and to the point, too:

It was my good friend Klaus Obermeier who singlehandedly tore down the Berlin wall, events accelerated after his speech at Saarbrucken Student Union.

Well, too bad 'ole Klaus didn't get the credit for it for as y'all say, it was Ronald Reagen!
