For your early Thursday morning reading pleasure, here's another one from the land of fruits and nuts:

In an official e-mail to the University of California at Berkeley campus community, chancellor Robert Birgeneau said that it was no “coincidence” that Saturday’s tragic shooting of Ariz. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and others at a public event in Tucson occurred in a state that recently enacted what he suggested was a discriminatory immigration law.

California refugees seeking business opportunity and freedom, clamor to board a vessel sailing for Arizona

Chancellor Birgeneau, perhaps indulging in a nostalgic LSD trip instead of reading the entire chapter, fails utterly to learn its lesson. It is due entirely to the Berkeley-mindset stewardship he so ably represents, that California is today a third world country. That's right. Dependent on the United States for it's day-to-day sustenance, and forbearance of unpaid debt; replete with refugees streaming across the border to, why - Arizona! Did you know that Jared Loughner, who murdered a Bush appointed a Bush appointed federal judge and a little girl in cold blood was a student of yours, Mr. Birgeneau? He was.

Police chief of America's 'gayest city' forced out for homophobia

It proudly boasts it is America's gayest city, attracting thousands of homosexual tourists.

But Palm Springs police chief David Dominguez has now lost his job - because he targeted gay visitors in an undercover sex sting.

The final straw came when he was caught on tape making 'an inappropriate comment' thought to be the F word - 'faggot'.

Dominguez had ordered his officers to squeeze into tight jeans and T-shirts, to lure men walking home from bars and nightclubs.

Police chief of America's gayest city Palm Springs forced out for 'homophobia' | Mail Online

San Fransisco values are American values.

The idea that most gay people live in urban enclaves like the Castro in San Francisco or Chelsea in New York City is something of a myth, Gates notes. "Gay people live everywhere," says Gates, "in cities, suburbs, and even in the country—one in seven same-sex couples live in rural areas." The 2000 Census found same-sex couples living in 99 percent of U.S. counties.

Berkeley is not San Francisco. Are you including all of Northern California in your definition of San Francisco?

You forgot to mention Clement Street in the Richmond district and the adjacent Presidio on one side of the Richmond district and Golden Gate Park which sits on the other side. GG Park which leads down to Ocean Beach, granted it's not a great beach but at least you can stick a toe in the Pacific Ocean. The Presidio leads to Baker Beach which is a bit nicer, the site of the original Burning Man and while heading to Baker Beach cut through the Sea Cliff neighborhood if nice homes are your thing.

And don't forget to catch a Giants game at ATT Park. They're world champions, you know!

    From National Public Radio:

Berkeley's Latest Liberal Cause: Sex Changes : NPR

Berkeley's Latest Liberal Cause: Sex Changes

Berkeley, Calif., is famous for taking on bold, liberal causes, which is why officials there may not have expected the controversy over a proposal to help city workers afford sex change operations.

The amount of cash at stake in Berkeley is fairly small. But it has still stirred up a debate over how much compassion the city can afford in these tough economic times.

Lynn Riordan is a fixture at a Berkeley coffee shop known for hosting neighborhood meetings. She works in the city's finance department and she's active in her union.
"I suppose the unusual thing about me is I'm a transsexual woman," Riordan said. "They estimate 1 in 50,000 are born this way."

Riordan was born as a boy, but she says she knew something wasn't right.
"When I was 5, I realized I was a girl. I never thought I was a boy," she says. "I quickly learned, however ... that people wanted me to pretend to be a boy."
Riordan finally had a sex change operation eight years ago when she was 49 years old.

    Gender Reassignment Surgery
She paid for the procedure herself, which at the time cost $11,000. Now she's advocating on behalf of transsexuals who can't afford the surgery and who are Berkeley city employees.

"We're campaigning to remove the discriminatory restrictions against treating transsexuality and its related medical problems," said Riordan. "Right now there's discrimination, and you know, tough luck if you have this condition, you don't get treated. If you have every other condition, they'll treat you."

Gender reassignment surgery currently isn't covered by Berkeley's two health insurance providers. So the City Council is considering setting aside a total of $20,000 a year to offset the cost.

City Councilman Darryl Moore spearheads the proposal, following the example of San Francisco, which has offered that benefit for a decade.

"It's not something that is cosmetic or something that is recreational," said Moore. "And it's not something you do in a day. You can't just walk into a doctor's office and say you want sexual reassignment surgery. It's a very long process and it's [the] very last step in that process."

The $20,000 would be available to any city employee on a first come, first served basis. To qualify, the employee has to have lived as an opposite-sex person for at least a year and already undergone hormone therapy.

Around town, even in this liberal bastion, the proposal raises eyebrows and questions.

    Controversy Over The Proposal

"I was shocked when I saw this on the agenda for the City Council and I thought, 'What in the world is going on here?' " said Ann Slaby, a former Berkeley zoning commissioner. "I have a great deal of empathy for people who feel that they're caught in a body that they don't wish to have. But the question becomes, who's going to pay for it? How come I'm paying?"

Others think the proposal should be modified a bit.

"What they need to do, if they're doing something like that is set up a fund for anybody that may need assistance with some type of medical treatment," said Taj Johns, a retired city employee. "For example, if people need help with dentistry, people need help with eyeglasses, anybody could apply for money from that fund. So it just shouldn't be for any targeted group. It should be available for anybody."
Michael Wilson, a nurse, said he supports the idea as a good use of public funds.

"Especially because it's not something that's going down the drain and never coming back," said Wilson. When you look at the life of a transgender person, being able to be move into the body type that actually works for them is actually going to be more productive for society as we move forward."

(That's all well and good in a world of unlimited resources.)

In the scope of a city budget, $20,000 is admittedly small change. But many question whether it should be offered when Berkeley faces more than $250 million in unfunded pension liabilities.

"Berkeley has a history of fighting for issues that are outside the normal range, the regular range," said George Woodward, a housing contractor. "And that's what the town is known for.

Woodward said it wouldn't surprise him if the proposal passes.

Whether the Berkeley City Council will continue that tradition and vote to pay for its employees' sex change operations will be weighed in a vote in mid-February.

Jewish groups oppose circumcision ban in US city

Jewish groups and others are up at arms over an attempt to outlaw male circumcision in San Francisco by putting the issue to a popular vote.

Self-described "intactivist" Lloyd Schofield has been collecting signatures for a voter initiative that would criminalize infant circumcision in the Californian city.

After two months of collecting names, he claims to be more than half way toward getting the 7,168 signatures he needs by late April to put the matter on the November ballot.

Schofield and a growing community of anti-circumcision activists say that infants should not be forced to participate in what is essentially culturally accepted genital mutilation.

They claim that the procedure can cause health risks and diminished sexual function and compare it to the clitoridectomies performed on girls in parts of Africa.

"This is a human rights issue," he said. "What you're doing is you're taking an infant and removing the most sensitive part of their body."

.... Circumcision rates among US male infants have dropped in recent decades, but more than half of newborns are still circumcised, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention.

The nuttiest foot race in sport.

    Today is the day-

SAN FRANCISCO—If there's one thing people here seem to agree on, it's that nudity during an athletic event isn't a problem. But the city's tolerance for other forms of debauchery during Bay to Breakers, its annual cross-town footrace, has finally run out.

This Sunday, on the race's 100th anniversary, officials have banned inebriated and unregistered runners, as well as any wheeled objects. Those prohibitions wouldn't be controversial at most road races—but for many participants, Bay to Breakers has little to do with running and a lot to do with finding creative ways to transport alcohol for 7.5 miles.

In recent years, mobile taverns known as floats—including a Viking ship, a tiki hut and a pole-dancing cage—have co-opted the race, allowing costumed revelers as well as runners to dance and drink as they go.

San Fran To Pass Bill Forcing Naked Perverts To Sit On a Towel When In Public.

The naked truth, it seems, is that San Francisco is once again going to emerge as a city ripe for ridicule — or a beacon of free expression — depending on your point of view. The latest issue? Public nudity.

Supervisor Scott Wiener will introduce legislation today intended to get to the bottom of the gross-out factor when it comes to public nudity.

His proposal would require people who bare all for all to see to at the very least place a towel or like item underneath them when they sit down. The proposed restrictions also would require nudists to cover up before they enter a restaurant.
”San Francisco is a liberal and tolerant city, and we pride ourselves on that fact,” said Wiener. ”Yet, while we have a variety of views about public nudity, we can all agree that when you sit down naked, you should cover the seat, and you should cover up when you go into a food establishment.”

Wiener represents the Castro District, where over the last year it has become increasingly common to see guys au natural (except, perhaps, for donning a pair of sneakers or flip-flops) walking down the street or gathering in the popular plaza at Market and 17th streets.

City officials have, for the most part, kept hands off the naked guys, not wanting to offend those who embrace an anything-goes culture of tolerance that has made San Francisco famous.

Message to nudists: At least be sanitary : City Insider

SF is famous alright - a town full of raving perverts...

This news should put some Republicans panties in a bunch.: Ninth Circuit Prop. 8 decision

Appeals court: Prop 8 UNCONSTITUTIONAL - full text of the decision (link above)

Prop 8 violates the 14th Amendment to the US Constitution.

No "legitimate reason" for Prop 8 to treat gays differently as a class.

Prop 8 had no effect on religious freedom or on parents' right to control their children's education.

"Prop 8 serves no purpose, and has no effect, other than to lessen the status and human dignity of gays and lesbians in California, and to officially reclassify their relationships and families as inferior to those of opposite-sex couples."

The official sponsors of Prop 8 are entitled to appeal the decision in court, they have standing to bring this case before the court.

"The People may not employ the initiative power to single out a disfavored group for unequal treatment and strip them, without a legitimate justification, of a right as important as the right to marry."

"We also affirm - for substantially the reasons set forth in the district court's opinion - the denial of the motion by the official sponsors of Proposition 8 to vacate the judgment by former Chief Judge Walker, on the basis of his purported interest in being allowed to marry his same-sex partner."
Keep your friends close and your enemies closer.

really brave target of ridicule, this last one...

While there is no one agreed upon definition, one definition originally developed as part of the McKinney-Vento Act of 1987 federal legislation,[7] describes a "homeless" person as being:
    An individual who lacks a fixed, regular, and adequate nighttime residence;
An individual who has a primary nighttime residence that is--
    A supervised publicly or privately operated shelter designed to provide temporary living accommodations (including welfare hotels, congregate shelters, and transitional housing for the mentally ill);
An institution that provides a temporary residence for individuals intended to be institutionalized; or
A public or private place not designed for, or ordinarily used as, a regular sleeping accommodation for human beings.
Fire away - you can piss off all the homeless people surfing TD from outside a Starbucks.

Far-Left San Francisco Considers Taxing Soft Drinks.

What's next? The air we breath?

"Supervisor Scott Wiener plans this week to introduce a ballot measure that would set a tax on sugary beverages. The proceeds would fund health, nutrition and activity programs for city youth.

Wiener’s proposal would levy a tax of 24 cents on each can of soda sold in the city, where fast-food restaurants are already prohibited from handing out free toys in kids’ meals high in fat, salt and sugar."

California is already installing Black Boxes on vehicles to track & tax.

Check this out. Most civilized cities throughout America provide tourist maps to their attractions. Well, if you're moonbat central - otherwise known as San Francisco, you provide maps for tourists so they don't step in homeless bums ca ca:

"Jennifer Wong, a web developer, created the map — dubbed “Human Wasteland” — to find where the homeless dwell in the West Coast city, according to Reuters. Her efforts got a boost thanks to the growing problem with people using Frisco streets as commodes.

The city received over 5,000 complaints about feces and urine from June to November 2014. Wong used this data for her map that depicted where there’s the most crap happening.
