Considering the number of other bird strikes with relatively little damage, it is not surprising that finally there was one which hit right in the middle of a plane's nose, causing the amount of damage you would expect.

The strongest part of the hull is the middle (apex) of the nose cone, most resistant to implosion.

Irresistible force meets immovable object.

Same principle as a plane hitting a building.....it all devolves into the basic laws of physics, despite what you might think / hope would happen.
