^ Pfft. California voters nixed Prop 8 (law passed for same-sex marriage) and the libbie 9th Circuit overruled the voters! I think the 9th also rules over WA, so who cares what the voters want. However:

The likelihood that the Supreme Court will weigh in on same-sex marriage in the coming year grew markedly on Tuesday (June 6) when a federal appeals court rejected a request to review its own recent ruling throwing out a voter-approved ban on same-sex marriage in California.

Jettie: Hopefully, the people will be heard NOW.

As I noted when I looked at this before, it also opens the door to incest "marriage", bestiality "marriage", inanimate object "marriage" (I like that one; the no-motion partner would be eligible forever for the dead motion partner's socual benefits, which would likely go to the DNC) and on and on.

I wanna marry my Lamborghini. (Not)
Anyhoo, this news snippet just came out. Sorry, it's from Fox, but hey, the studies are not. I dare ya to find a leftie news source with this info.

The "no differences" theory that children of gay parents—married or not—do not substantially differ from the children of married, heterosexual parents has now been called into question.
    ...
Those who knew that their mothers had had a lesbian relationship fared significantly worse on measures of educational attainment and household income, reported more depression, used marijuana more, more often reported forced sexual encounters, felt less close to their biological mother, felt less safe and secure in their family of origin, had more often pled guilty to a minor criminal offense and were more likely to be on public assistance. Those who knew their fathers had had a gay relationship were more likely to have been arrested, to have thought recently about suicide, to feel depressed, to report sexually transmitted diseases and to have experienced forced sex.
Twenty-three percent of young adults who knew their mother to have had a gay relationship reported being forced to have sexual contact with a parent or adult caregiver, while only 2 percent of intact families with a mother and father reported such contact. For female young adults, that figure leapt to 31 percent (while only 3 percent of young women from intact heterosexual families reported this).

Pentagon to mark gay pride month

Last summer, gays in the military dared not admit their sexual orientation. This summer, the Pentagon will salute them, marking June as gay pride month just as it has marked other celebrations honoring racial or ethnic groups.

In the latest remarkable sign of change since the military repealed the "don't ask, don't tell" policy, the Defense Department will soon hold its first event to recognize gay and lesbian troops. It comes nine months after repeal of the policy that had banned gay troops from serving openly and forced more than 13,500 service members out of the armed forces.

    snip

The policy known as "don't ask, don't tell" was in force for 18 years, and its repeal was a slow and deliberate process.

President Barack Obama on Dec. 22, 2010, signed legislation repealing it. Framing the issue as a matter of civil rights long denied, Obama said that "we are a nation that welcomes the service of every patriot ... a nation that believes that all men and women are created equal."

How about legalising homosexual, incestuous polygamy?

I have actually been on another forum (a very liberal one) and got banned for 5 days for opposing this nonsense.

Since when can two men, or women, have a child together?

That's what marriage should really be about - or at least the ability to have one.

Glad to have finally found a site where there is some commonsense on this issue.

You don't mean to say that a man and a woman who can't have children toegether, or at least have decided they won't have children, should not be allowed to marry each other?

Homosexuality is not illegal in most modern countries, so why shouldn't those who are so inclined be allowed to form marriage unions with the one they love. It has nothing to do with legalizing incest, polygamy (sp) pedophelia, or screwin' the pooch.

of course it has, because it is re-defining the definition of marriage.

If we can change man and woman, to man and man, then what is to say we can't change it again?

soon we will be allowing man and brother, dog, or something else.

the ability or supposed ability to have children under normal circumstances
, as designed by nature - this is the key fact.

And you said you were all in favor of common sense. I suppose if someone wants to fire up a coalition of people who want to marry dogs, or their brother, or some other such rhetorical nonsense, then the we can look at that proposal and see if it's what we want to allow. I personally think nobody will go for it, but you can try. Mormons said it was normal for a man and many women, and that was changed with no harm to the "sacred institution".

By the way, what about a man and a woman who can't or don't want to have children? Shall the People-Who-Decide-The-Definition-of-Marriage-To-Include- Only-Us seperate those out of the club?

no, because as I said, a man and woman either have the ability or the supposed ability to have a child together.

If there is a medical problem preventing childbirth, then marriage is still acceptable because nature has originally intended the ability.

Hmmmm. So nature "intented" marriage to be defined a certain way...? What about God...the bible...your local priest...imam (sp)...church lady...? Marriage is a legal condition, defined and man made start to finish, unless you're suggesting the right to impose the prevailing religeous bias on all of of us.

marriage is just a celebration of nature - whether religious or secular.

Nature allows for man and woman to have child, and then a bond is needed for security.

    Thus marriage.

This cannot happen naturally in a same-sex arrangement.

I confess: I don't see the relevence to this argument.

Since nature produces homesexuals at about 10% (roughly) of the population, pretty steadily around the world including many examples in the animal kingdom, then on what basis would you exclude that 10% of the right to marriage? Are they not natural beings as well?

Why is the ability to bear genetic offspring the one and only gold standard qualifier of nature. It was, after all, a hetero-sexual couple that produced the little homosexual bastard in the first place, so clearly nature has a mechanism built into her plan to go forth and multiply.

Who can rightly raise children? If coupling between a man and a woman fails to produce children--an act of nature, I might add--then does that mean they should not be allowed the right to adopt, as homosexuals are not allowed because of their un-naturalness?

I'm having a little fun, but I'm not being facetious. These are legitimate questions. How do you just write people out of the human family for playing with each other's genitals?

My memory is on the high end of the range, but the basic idea is the same

    http://www.gallup.com/poll/6961/What-Percentage-Population-Gay.aspx

This piece from Wiki may clarify what is, it turns out, a number not precisely known.

    Demographics
Main article: Demographics of sexual orientation
Reliable data as to the size of the gay and lesbian population are of value in informing public policy.[86] For example, demographics would help in calculating the costs and benefits of domestic partnership benefits, of the impact of legalizing gay adoption, and of the impact of the U.S. military's Don't Ask Don't Tell policy.[86] Further, knowledge of the size of the "gay and lesbian population holds promise for helping social scientists understand a wide array of important questions—questions about the general nature of labor market choices, accumulation of human capital, specialization within households, discrimination, and decisions about geographic location."[86]
Measuring the prevalence of homosexuality presents difficulties.[6] Many people, despite having same-sex attractions, may be reluctant to identify themselves as gay or bisexual. The research must measure some characteristic that may or may not be defining of sexual orientation. The number of people with same-sex desires may be larger than the number of people who act on those desires, which in turn may be larger than the number of people who self-identify as gay, lesbian, or bisexual.[86]
In 1948 and 1953, Alfred Kinsey reported that nearly 46% of the male subjects had "reacted" sexually to persons of both sexes in the course of their adult lives, and 37% had had at least one homosexual experience.[87][88] Kinsey's methodology was criticized.[89][90] A later study tried to eliminate the sample bias, but still reached similar conclusions.[91]
Estimates of the occurrence of same-sex behavior range from 2 to 10 percent of the population.[8][9][12][13][15][16][17][92] A 1992 study reported that 6.1% of males in Britain have had a homosexual experience, while in France the number was reported at 4.1%.[93] In New Zealand, a 2006 study suggested that 20% of the population anonymously reported some homosexual feelings with few of them identifying as homosexual. Percentage of persons identifying as homosexual was 2–3%.[17] According to a 2008 poll, 13% of Britons have had some form of same-sex sexual contact while only 6% of Britons identify themselves as either homosexual or bisexual.[94] Contrastingly, a survey by the UK Office for National Statistics (ONS) in 2010 found that 1.5% of Britons identified themselves as gay or bisexual, and the ONS suggests that this is in line with other surveys showing the number between 0.3% and 3%.[95][88]
In the United States, according to exit polling on 2008 Election Day for the 2008 Presidential elections, 4% of electorates self-identified as gay, lesbian, or bisexual, the same percentage as in 2004."[96] According to the 2000 United States Census there were about 601,209 same-sex unmarried partner households.[97]

yes, it's just equality for the sake of equality.

And of course, a gay man or woman could still have a child biologically if they really wanted to.

how much do you want to be a parent?

enough to have sex with someone of the opposite gender?

    seems a small ask IMO.

not prepared to do that? - probably not prepared to be much of a parent either.
