    Costa Rica legalises same-sex marriage in first for Central America

    Costa Rica legalised same-sex marriage on Tuesday, becoming the first Central American country to do so, as a court ruling came into force at midnight.


    Planned celebrations did not take place because of the coronavirus pandemic, but a special program about LGBT rights was broadcast on public television and online as the first weddings were held.

    "This change will bring about a significant social and cultural transformation, allowing thousands of people to marry," said President Carlos Alvarado in the program.

    Costa Rica is the eighth country in the Americas to recognise same-sex marriage -- a group that includes Brazil, Ecuador and Argentina, as well as Canada and the US.

    The move was triggered by a 2018 ruling of the Supreme Court which declared the part of the law banning gay marriage was unconstitutional.

    That ruling gave parliament 18 months to legislate on the matter -- but it did not, so the provision was automatically annulled.

    "Costa Rica is celebrating today: marriage equality has become a reality in the country -- the first one in Central America," said the International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex Association (ILGA) in a tweet.

    "We rejoice with you: congratulations to all those who worked so hard to make it happen!"

    Victor Madrigal-Borloz, the UN's Independent Expert on Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity, called it "an extraordinary moment of celebration" in a tweet posted hours before midnight.

    The first same-sex weddings have taken place in Costa Rica, the first Central American country to equalise its marriage legislation.
    A lesbian couple became the first to tie the knot in a ceremony that took place just after the new law came into effect at midnight.

    The wedding was shown on national TV.

    Many African countries still enforce strict laws governing homosexualityZambia's President Edgar Lungu has pardoned two men who were jailed last year for having sex with each other.

    Their 15-year sentence triggered a diplomatic row, which ended in the recalling of the US ambassador.
    The two men, Japhet Chataba and Steven Samba, were listed among the names of nearly 3,000 prisoners to be pardoned to mark Africa Freedom Day, which fell on Monday.

    Zambia is a deeply conservative society where homosexual acts are illegal.
    This was legislation inherited from the British colonial era.


    • Last November, a High Court in the capital, Lusaka, sentenced the two men for having sex "against the order of nature".

    They had booked into a lodge, and a worker peeped through an open window and saw them having sex, the court heard.

    At the time, US ambassador Daniel Foote said he was "horrified" by the sentencing.
    He implored the Zambian government to review the case and its homosexuality laws, but then faced a backlash for his comments.

    'We want him gone'


    The government felt that the ambassador was trying to use the aid money that the US gives as leverage.

    At the time, Zambia's Foreign Minister Joseph Malanji told the BBC the government could not be forced to make decisions "at gunpoint" because of aid.
    In response the diplomat's comments, President Lungu then said that he did not "want such people in our midst. We want him gone".

    Mr Foote was recalled to Washington in December.

    The Supreme Court on Monday ruled 6-3 in a landmark decision that gay and transgender employees are protected by civil rights laws against employer discrimination.

    A set of cases that came before the court had asked the justices to decide whether Title VII of the 1964 Civil Rights Act, which forbids discrimination on the basis of "sex," applies to gay and transgender people.

    Justice Neil Gorsuch, who wrote the opinion for the six-member majority, said that it does.

    "Today, we must decide whether an employer can fire someone simply for being homosexual or transgender," Gorsuch wrote. "The answer is clear. An employer who fires an individual for being homosexual or transgender fires that person for traits or actions it would not have questioned in members of a different sex. Sex plays a necessary and undisguisable role in the decision, exactly what Title VII forbids."

    Gorsuch was joined by Chief Justice John Roberts and Justices Stephen Breyer, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Elena Kagan and Sonia Sotomayor. Justices Samuel Alito, Brett Kavanaugh and Clarence Thomas dissented from the decision.

    The decision was one of the most highly anticipated of a Supreme Court term stacked with high-profile cases.     The Trump administration sided with the employers, a position that put it at odds with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, which decided in 2015 that gay and transgender people were federally protected.

    The Supreme Court on Monday declined to take up new cases for next term that gun rights groups claimed denied Second Amendment rights.

    The court did not accept a batch of nearly a dozen cases that gun groups had hoped the court, fortified with more conservative members, might consider. Among them were cases involving restrictions in Maryland and New Jersey to permits for carrying a handgun outside the home.

    The court let stand the law passed after President Trump took office and challenged by his administration. The most significant measure limits police from sharing information unless the immigrants have been convicted of violent or serious crimes.

    If a couple of fruits want to get hitched to each other and then pretend they're in a respectable relationship then i couldn't care any less, but just don't start taking offence and making a big deal of your 'preferred' pronouns. If you're a bloke then you're getting called 'he', and it makes no difference if you wear a dress and camp it up.

What you wish to do is condition everyone around you for authoritarianism, you want people to override their own perceptions and replace them with what they are told.     The country's views of same-sex marriage have transformed since 2004, when Massachusetts became the first state to allow gay couples to wed. In 2013, the Supreme Court began chipping away at the country's legacy of discrimination against same-sex couples when it struck down part of the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act, which prevented same-sex couples whose marriages were recognized by their home state from receiving the hundreds of benefits available to other married couples under federal law.

    Some conservatives have advocated for a civil disobedience effort against a Supreme Court decision in favor of same-sex marriage. However, officials in red states told The Huffington Post recently that they are prepared to implement the decision, going so far as to ready gender-neutral marriage licenses and set later office hours. Gerard Rickhoff, who oversees marriage licenses in Bexar County, Texas, said that if same-sex couples are discriminated against elsewhere in the state, "Just get in your car and come on down the highway. You'll be embraced here."
