Well that kind of says it all really.

The real flood of refugees started when Assad (well Putin really) was bombing around Damascus and Aleppo and destroyed critical infrastructure like water supplies, electricity and hospitals.

It seems the Western attitude to Syria is the same as that towards HK. Perpetually sulking, because they couldn't get their way.

    (8 years, 4 months and 6 days)

And the program to which you refer started in 2013.

President Barack Obama secretly authorized the CIA to begin arming Syria's embattled rebels in 2013
i.e. Two years after Assad started his war on the Syrian people.

Don't try and pass off selected lines of text as if they come from the link you've provided.

Did you read the part where the russians came into this conflict 2015? where the US became involved in

Coincidently the year the Syrian refugee problem started.

Russia was always in Syria providing political and military aid. Putin wanted to keep his base at Tartus.

What he did in 2015 was add more troops and equipment.

He's been supporting Assad since day one.

If you didn't know what a disgusting piece of subhuman scum Assad is, you do now.

Assad bombs rebel-held Syrian town 'immediately' after earthquake

The Syrian government bombed an opposition-held area of the country in the immediate aftermath of the earthquake, according to the UK government.
President Bashar al-Assad launched a "truly callous and heinous attack" on Marea, a town in northwestern Syria affected by the earthquake, said MP Alicia Kearns, who chairs the Foreign Affairs Committee.
Foreign Secretary James Cleverly criticised the Assad regime for the "completely unacceptable bombing".
Mr Cleverly said: "[Ms Kearns] is absolutely right to highlight the completely unacceptable bombing of areas in the immediate aftermath of this natural disaster.
"Sadly it speaks to a long-standing pattern of behaviour by the Assad regime, a regime that we condemn, have sanctioned and will continue to bring about sanctions - working with our international friends and partners - to try and prevent behaviour like this occurring again."
Much of Syria has been ravaged by years of civil war and contested control of territories near the border with Turkey.

As I said when this conflict started, Assad is not so full of it when he hasn't got his Russian and Iranian enforcers behind him. Benny is watching carefully, even though it's a direct result of what he's done in Syria.

Syrian armed groups launched a large-scale attack on areas controlled by government forces and seized territory in northwestern Syria, opposition groups said Thursday. The government and its allies responded with airstrikes and shelling to ward off the insurgent advances, activists said.
The violence has displaced thousands of families, and forced aid groups to suspend some of their services. Volunteers with the Syrian Civil Defense, known as the White Helmets, said at least 18 people, including three children and two women, were killed in two different villages in western Aleppo following airstrikes. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a war monitor, said the airstrikes were from Russian warplanes.
Syria’s armed forces said Thursday the offensive was led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, or HTS, which controls much of northwest Syria and is a violation of a de-escalation agreement. It said the attacks are ongoing and have targeted a number of villages and military bases.
Turkey, which backs Syrian opposition factions, and Russia and Iran, which have backed government forces, reached an agreement in late 2019 that effectively froze the line of the conflict and prevented government advances in Idlib province, which has been the last stronghold for a mix of radical groups and Turkey-backed Syrian forces.

Retreat of Syrian Forces Threatens ‘Saigon Moment’ for Russia

A fast-advancing rebel offensive in Syria threatens to dislodge Russia from a strategic linchpin that Moscow has used for a decade to project power in the Middle East, in the Mediterranean and into the African continent.

It also challenges Russian President Vladimir Putin’s efforts to portray Moscow as a flag bearer for an alternative global order to rival Western liberalism, and his defense of the Syrian regime as evidence of successful pushback against American dominance in the region.

A coalition of Syrian rebels launched a surprise offensive last week, reigniting a dormant civil war and seizing significant swaths of territory in Syria, which hosts important Russian air and naval bases. The rebels have already taken the cities of Aleppo and Hama and are now closing in on Homs.

A glance at the map shows how Assad may lose access to the sea and the vital port of Latakia on the Med, facing Cyprus.
At present many forces in Syria inc Russian USA Turkey Kurds etc. Air seems to be open to IDF as needs.

    Just a moment...

If the Russian access to the Khmeimim Air Base curtailed
    (35° 24′ 42″ N, 35° 56′ 42″ E)
it will also be lost to resupply their "Wagner Group leftover" troops in Africa too.

Assad will have to flee to Iran's Damevan 'dachas' ,Kish or similar , looks good for Israel though remains to be seen how neighbours will like an Islamist state next door. Most would prefer endless instability to quell Syria.

'Murdering Kurds on the street': Syrian Druze warns of Islamist extremism
By JERUSALEM POST STAFF DECEMBER 2, 2024 09:27

The rebel factions that took over Aleppo do not accept other religions than Islam, a resident of the Druze city of Suwayda in southwestern Syria told Israeli state broadcaster KAN on Monday.

"The factions that took over Aleppo destroyed Christmas trees that were set up for the holiday. They are murdering Kurds in the streets," he noted, adding, "Their slogans are 'Jihad' and 'Allahu Akbar.'"

While he noted that the "current regime is dictatorial," the citizen of Suwayda added, "It allows freedom of religion and does not interfere in that domain, whereas the Islamists do not accept other religions in Syria. This is fundamentally different."

"The Syrians did not sacrifice what they sacrificed just to move from bad to worse. That is the source of concern," he told KAN. "We want the situation in Syria to improve, not deteriorate further."
With regard to Israel, he reportedly affirmed, "Our expectation from the State of Israel and the Druze in Israel is that their interest in Suwayda will be significant, as we, as Druze, do not want to be drawn into sectarian fighting. If we are attacked, we will fight with fierce determination."

On Friday night, Syrian rebels, led by the Salafi-jihadist Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), captured significant parts of Aleppo, east of Idlib, coercing the Syrian Army to redeploy.

President Bashar al-Assad's regime has presented itself as a defender of minorities in the country, such as Alawites, from which Assad's family originates, Christians, and Druze.

As such, many minority groups are perceived by the rebels as "pro-Assad."

Damascus: Syrian rebel factions said Sunday morning in a message broadcast on state television that they had toppled "tyrant" Bashar al-Assad and freed unjustly detained prisoners, while calling for the safeguarding of state property.
A group of people were shown at the state television news studio, with one reading a statement from the "Damascus Conquest operations room" announcing "the liberation of the city of Damascus and the fall of the tyrant Bashar al-Assad and the release of all the unjustly detained from the regime prisons", calling on fighters and citizens to safeguard the "property of the free Syrian state".

    Or maybe not

A private jet departed Damascus and arrived in Abu Dhabi on December 7, carrying Syria's President Bashar al-Assad and the rest of his family, as they fled rebels rapidly taking control of his country, Turkish media have reported.
Bit of a fucking shame if they missed.
