Wrong. The second step of turning H2 into carbohydrates is a very well established process and can be done with low cost and high efficiency. The step of hydrolysis is the one with high losses. If I remember correctly the efficiency is only 60%, that is one reason why it is not used presently on an industrial scale. The carbon comes from CO2 in the atmosphere. The process is a closed circuit and carbon neutral the way the production of carbohydrates by plants is.
And I suggest it as only one of several possible solutions. Running cars on H2 I don't see as a viable alternative, but may be wrong.

Very funny.
You may or may not have noticed that the guy is using AC not DC for his experiment.
You may or may not know what that means. It means that H2 and O2 are produced at each electrode unlike H2 on one and O2 on the other electrode with DC.
That means you get a nice explosive mixture which easily explains the little firework displayed. As he is using quite a lot of power the water boiling is also easily explained.

Give us all an explanation.
The point of the thread is that hydrogen is a viable source of energy.

I have said it several times but you don't accept it. Hydrogen is not a source of energy, it is a carrier. You always put more energy in to produce it than you can get out burning it or using it to run a fuelcell.Originally Posted by ENT

Tell that to all those who are actually getting results from hands on experiments.
If you've really got the inclination, set up your own demos. or present work done by others to prove what you're saying.
You put in available sunlight, that is energy that comes from the sun. It is renewable until the sun runs out of hydrogen to fuse into helium which will take a few billion years. So again we put a lot more of energy in than we get out. Fortunately there is enough sunlight so we can afford the losses. We still try to make it as efficient as we can because better efficiency usually (not always) means lower cost per harnessed amount of energy.Originally Posted by Carrabow

A few days ago I picked up my daughter at her university. And I saw that they have a department that tries to develop an efficient method to harness biomass using algae (my personal pet method). There are a lot of parameters they are working on. During wintertime they need different algae than during summer because of the temperature difference. They are researching efficient and cheap methods to provide CO2 to the algae for their growth. And a lot of other things to consider to promote best productivity.
On the other side ENT is proposing to use electricity from a battery to produce H2 and then burn that H2 in a car engine. That process has an overall efficiency of 20-25% at best opposed to feeding the electricity into an electric motor to run the car which has an efficiency of close to 100%.
And he insists on his wrong belief that the produced H2 contains more energy than the electricity put in.
With all the vegetation and sugar cane in LOS lets make alchohol. I can make an engine run pretty good on that
