Is Koh Samui as bad as Phuket ?

I'm gonna pop there for a few days in December to see a friend

What are the pitfalls to avoid and where are the nice spots ?

My friend will be staying by Big Buddha Beach

The hotels I've been looking at are on Chaweng Beach, Maenam Beach and Bophut Beach along with Big Buddha Beach

    Grateful for any advice, Cheers

I'd go with Maenam out of that little lot but it all depends on you and what are you looking to take away from this holiday?

Those little green roads between Chaweng and Big Buddha Beach are swinging the balance.

Looks like a nice Scooter escape route, after she's fell asleep

^ how many airmiles you got? Enough for me to come along? Can I bring the missus and her mum? The cats?

I'm really looking forward to this buddy, can you give me the hard dates. Also, due to the flooding, I'm a bit short on hard cash, so I'll be needing to throw a few minor items on your CC. You Northerners are bloody great!
    Cycling should be banned!!!

I stayed at Mae Nam beach resort [at] Bht 2,000/night/double room in March.
Next to Shady Rest, (dont go there unless you're desperate Bht600.)

Beach front chalets, no weird smells, swimming, clean beach, no pool.

Nice and quiet, comfortable, clean, tidy, good menu, alcohol good service.

Up the soi from there are a few bars, the one at the end is full of Belgians and a pool table with a hell of a sexy barmaid, belongs to the Belgian owner.

There's a corner Mom 'n'pop store, supplies all your usual bits and pieces and tomato juice for your bloody marys.

Around the corner on the main road are a couple of eateries, one run by Willy, a Pom.
    Safe and clean, unpretentious place.

Beside it a bar with some girls, keen, young, one was m....took her home.,,no HIV, tested

Across the road a more upmarket eatery, clean, good food.

Taxi mafia, everywhere a real rip off, tried to smack my son in law.
    Enjoyable stay, otherwise.

    Good security.

Further east toward Big Buddha beach, the places get ritzier and more expensive, but closer to airport and the racket from the planes is a piss off.

    Yes, I have actually

Unfortunately it's a Northerners only Hotel Award scheme, so unless you can borrow a ferret and a flat cap you won't be allowed in.

Judging by the hat and the shirt, he's an Ocker, from Oz.
The green and yellow striped drum is also Oz colours.

No wellies to hold the sheep's back legs, definitely not a Kiwi, mate.

The sheep is obviously a Scottish black faced highland breed, reportedly much discriminated against by farmers in Oz, as you can tell.

    Welsh sheep are much prettier.

^ you seem to be quite the expert; I'll bow to your superior knowledge.

Out of interest, where do these Slagish sheep come from - the Bridgend area perhaps?
