Exclamation Koh Samui, Watch out for Taxi meter prices

Taking Taxi meter, or any other Taxi in Samui is nothing like Bangkok. Taxi meter do not operate the meters, you need to bargain and agree on a price prior to getting in and it will end up expensive for Thailand standards.

The worst is taxi to and from the Airport, it can cost 400THB for a ride of less then 6km or 10 min. The best advice get transfer from your hotel or even better, get the Limonene Service from Bangkok Airways after arrival. It is not real Limonene, just a nice and safe minivan at very resnoble price 100THB to most destinations. Some agencies on line like Tours Koh Samui can even arrange any transfer ahead of time for good prices.

I have experienced these samui taxi's even when you agree a price they still try to cheat you when you try to point out the error of there ways they then want to fight you.

Strangely, the exact opposite is true in Phuket. The taxis are reasonably priced and the minivans are a rip-off. The vans also stop in the middle of nowhere at a tour office and try to sell every person in the van every tour on the island. This can double your journey time from the expected 30-40 minutes to well over an hour and a half if you are with a load of gullible tourists who listen to the hard sell and sign up for the tours.

The taxis at the airport are now fairly well sign-posted, but if you can't see the signs, they are straight out of the airport, straight through the car park and on the left.

Oh yeah, I remember those. I got lucky with a 300 baht ride I guess. Kho Samui is the island of Thai gangsters. It's still not too bad.

Last time we were there, we needed a ride of about 2 kms, my wife asked the taxi driver how much. He quoted 300 baht! She compared the price with Bangkok. He said, Samui is not Thailand, this is a western country outside Thailand and thats why the price is different.

That's not completely true - but the taxi drivers are the biggest bunch of wankers I have ever had the misfortune to deal with.
