    A look around Ranong

Ranong is a fairly busy little fishing seaport on the Andaman coast and is also a frontier town with Burma. The "official" population is about 25k, though I suspect it's more likely to be double that if you take all the Burmese into account.
The main industry is fish so I'll start with the fishing port and fish market.

They pack the fish in ice in those blue barrels

    Sorting blue craps

    Sorting shrimp

Ready for the retail markets in Bangkok

    Little mountains of squid

Quite an array of different species!

    Lovely fountain

note the fresh paint on the building, a sign of prosperity, you see freshly painted building like this all over town.

The ice trucks, you see lots of these around.
Ice is a key feature as the fishing boats don't usually make their own ice like in western countries.

These are the trucks which haul the fish to points north and south
It can be an eyeopener when you meet a pair of these guys passing on a blind corner.(which I've seen more than once)

    More to come....

As I was uploading the pics I got this strong fishy smell, I had to wash my sandals then move them outside my hotel room. Phewh!

When we went to Rannong to catch the boat to Ko Paiyam the police were kind enough to let us leave the car in their station car park so that it wouldn't get nicked. Nice blokes.

Ranong Immigration is the best. I turned up bollocksed on valium and ale more than a few times (I don't suffer mini bus trips too well) and the officer behind the desk would more often than not snap open a cold Heineken from his personal stache for me, which I'd neck infront of bemused tourists.

Also drove the long tail from Ranong to Burma a couple of times, in a smilar state, which was greeted with much anxiety from my fellow visa runners..

Stopped on the way up once to watch Longtail racing. Exciting stuff and certainly packed the crowds in. I didn't realise the little buggers could shift so fast.

    Hot Springs

So no trip to Ranong is complete without going to the famous hot springs.

The street up to the hot springs is lined with these very attractive light posts.

They pipe the hot water to a couple of local hotels.

    Next stop Ranong Canyon...

Yeh, the Isthmus of Kra is a loong peninsula. I'd like to do a good old fashioned road trip down there, and take a few weeks about it. Bluddy long way from Ubon though.

A bar where the Expat's used to gather Sophon's Hideaway, is now Thai owned. Not sure where the Expat's gather as I don't go into the city much now. Pay bills and that's about it.

Ranong is or was #3 on the HIV infection rate, behind Bangkok and Phuket.
