    Hua Hin Overrated

Spent 3 days in Hua Hin. My wife's Thai family was with us. Has to be one of the most overrated places on earth. The beach is terrible. The city of Hua Hin is crowded and terrible. Loaded with Farangs and tour buses. Couldn't wait to get out of there as we were paying about $60 per day and that was after a 50% discount obtained by my nephew who works at this hotel chain. 23 years ago, when I lived in Thailand, it wasn't like this. It seems that every place you go, in the Land of Smiles these days, is a tourist trap.

Considering cutting my two month vacation short by a month and going back to civilization. Sorry, but the Thai people are doing it to themselves I'm afraid.

You have to stay in a very nice hotel, usually the Hilton as it's very well located

the city itself is quite small, not much to do, that's when the hotel swimming pool becomes handy

then 6pm, happy hours time, and Lolita, and you are done for the day

You are a tourist. You go to Hua Hin and complain that it is a tourist trap

Ive been there. I feel that one must make an effort to explore the area, that involves a fair bit of ground work and effort, hiring a motorbike is the way to go and I always do this in new destinations.

Pays dividends as I always find places I like or meet people in the most strange places, meeting the locals makes all the difference and if one don't make an effort they will complain about a place just like this guy is doing.

Suck it up mate and go have a decent look around the place, I offer up Prachip Kiri khan as an example.

Agreed, you need to look around. I found some glorious places on my travels by car. Can't tell you what they were called as i didn't take a note. So that's not much help is it?

I did stay at a military hotel which was very pleasant though.

^^ What Baldrick said but having said that I have not been there in over 6 years.

Really Thailand is not a picture post card as far as the "in your face" Tourist venues goes and you must know where to go to find the real siam.

Unfortunately the real siam is shrinking and fading fast as well and very soon Thailand will only be popular to those after a cheap and easy shag!

I really think you sound like a Cheap Charlie....did you pay $ 60 a night for the whole family or...??

And how much do you see in only three days?
Hua HIn must be one of the best places to stay in Thailand and I say that after being living here for more than four years now...a lot of people from all over the world loves this place ...
We got a lot more than one beach you know and there are nice beaches almost empty for people only a few kms from the city centre......and i must say I never noticed the many tourist busses as you mention...if you bother to go a little bit further around this nice sourrundings you will find a lot a nice restaurants with all kinds of food...lots of cultural events like music and art...and so many different but nice people from all over the world...and tell me...why do Thais love this city?

There ar NO GO-GO bars here, only a small street of beer bars where you even can bring your kids without being harassed by prostitutes or drunks...
so I do hope people who has been here in this this city agree with me...Hua Hin is a good place to visit for your holiday...beeing Thai or Farangs does not matter at all......

Far nicer places south of Hua Hin, its always had a crap beach, its over priced
Can't see why people bother, particularly now its that over crowded.
Much rather stay at Prachip Kiri khan as our esteemed member Terry has suggested, beach is a bit crap when the tides out but its nice and relaxing, good value and not over run with tourists. bit it seems the further south you go the better beaches can be found.

    ^ Aaaw, thanks, luv.

Actually, I'd agree Hua Hin is overrated, in the way most Thai tourist towns are overrated. If you were discontented, did you make the effort to visit other places, nearby, OP? Kao Tao? Pranburi? Cha-am? Prachuab? Kao Kalok/Pak Nam Pran? All nice beach areas. For other types of view, Sam Roi Yod and Pala U are near, as is Petchburi. Did you visit any of those? If you only stayed in Hua Hin town centre, then I can see that it might not have lived up to your expectations. It's just another tourist town, after all. But, if you didn't make the effort to see anything else, when there are so many places a maximum of an hour and a half away, then, you really only have yourself to blame.

Suan son. Not bad little beach area either, between Khao Takiab (round the rock) and Khao Tao.
