Hua Hin immigration "down and dirty"

Seems that Hua Hin Immigration has instituted it's own set of rules. If you enter Thailand ( or re-enter) and don't report within 24 hrs. to the Hua Hin immigration office you will be fined 800 bt. As of yet there have been no other reports of any other im offices in Thailand requiring foreigners to report within 24 hrs. of entering the country.

Your new TM form upon re-entry into Thailand, should have served as your reporting. You should only have to report again in 90 days, or exit/enter.

Nong Khai have been fining falangs for their landlords or the person on the tabien bahn not reporting the falangs as living there within 24 hrs of their arrival. It's the landlord/wife who reallly has to pay but it's given to the falang

Its a 900 km trip to Hua Hin for me but i'm just leaving now. Will be there soon

Yes GP, Nong Khai has enforced this rule for as long as I've been here. They burn my mate every time for 1000B.

How do they levy fines? Are they carrying out spot checks or do they just do a check on those unfortunates who happen to need to go to immigation for some other purpose?

Not even the supermonkeys could service the >10m annual farang arrivals, and then there are logistical issues involved like travel and accommodation, and anyway if a farang doesn't make it within 24 hours and then avoids Hua Hin altogether how are they to know?

It ain't about Hua Hin.

If you're living anywhere in Thailand on a renewed 3-month visa you're required to report to your local immigration within 24 hours when you either establish a residence or move.

If you don't do this, immigration can sting you for 1,000B when you nip in there for ANY reason. They usually don't unless you happen to live near Hua Hin or Nong Khai.

That's absolutely it. There's a thread about it on the local forum, Dougal. It seems that the law/bylaw is actually about provinces, so in theory, if you travelled from HH to BKK, you'd have to stop in & report in about 4 different provincial immigration offices on the way. Or if you go from Cha am to Hua Hin, that's two different provinces, so a report to immigration is (legally) necessary. I think the immigration officers are collecting for their Loy Krathong party fund...

I read the various comments which were a bit contradictory in parts.

As I read it the supposed need to register was dependent on where you spent the night. i.e. if you drove from Prachuap to BKK to stay you would not need to report to Petchaburi on the way, only BKK.

Reporting is generally done automatically by hotels - I am always asked in BKK for my passport and I have seen them note the visa number in their books.

Of course inter provinicial reporting is a nonsense as there seems to be no central database or consistency in how or whether data is collected. That might not be the case for immigrant guest workers such as Burmese or Cambodians though.

I guess I am just going to have to accept that there is an 800B surcharge on whatever the next service I require from immigration is.

When you establish residence or move residence. It has nothing to do with spending a night in a hotel somewhere.

Technically you must report your location if it changes for more then 24 hours.
i.e. if you leave your house for more than a day.
Tapien Baan doesn't change anything, you are still an alien and the police need to know where to find you.

It is impractical to impose and the paperwork would be a mountain.
