    Hua Hin horse rides

Thought some of you might be interested in this tourist activity. I wasn't, but my daughter was. This delight costs B300 for 30 minutes, give or take.

So what is the story behind these guys? This is what I found out. BTW, they do tend to be very careful. However, it might be because of the horse instead of the passenger...

The average horse costs about B150,000. Most of the ones you see giving rides are usually 4-5 years on up.

Figure in about B500 per day to feed the horse, I didn't even ask about the vet bill.

Pay B85,000 for the number of the horse.

And then I noticed a bulletin posted on the top of the TV where we stayed.

Sialom- Guideline #2: The horses for hire on the beach are not professionally raised and dressed. They are unhygienic and might have skin diseases. We do not recommend that you ride on them so as to avoid all risks.

Long time since we have been here, but at least we didn't see or step in, any horse shit on the beach.

    Total cost? B900!

    Hillbilly,

We have quite a few of the horse owners near us (yes, in HH). I doubt they spend 500bt a day on food for the horses. They tend to just tie them up to graze on common scrubland. I've never seen one feed their horse anything other than grass. One in our area just leaves his horse to roam & it's nearly been hit by vehicles a few times.

I also doubt they use vets. One near us had colic about a year ago (I used to ride & take care of horses as a teenager). They came to us (a dog rescue center) to pay for a vet. Sadly, we didn't have much in the way of funds at that time, so we had to say "no". They did seem well versed in the basic care of colic & the horse did survive, but no vet went anywhere near it.

when i was in hua hin a few months ago, i went down to the beach to have a look see.

i sort of staggered onto the area where they hired those horses out at the main tourist entrance.

i just sat there for a few hours observing how these horse owners operated and ended up walking of in discust.

when a tourist appeared they were all sweet and nice to there horse but soon as the customers wernt around they absolutely treated those horses with contempt and cruelty.

i must say i was a bit surprised to see this, as its how they make there money and one would think they would look after there horse.

    bottom line hillbilly.

dont give them any more business.

they are right bunch of tossers.

I would agree. Sit & watch (as Terry did) & note when/if they give the horse water or shade. Not good.

Don't some of these jocks double up as some sort of "deputy" tourist police - seriously?

Or is the shiney badge just for show?

    Thumbs down

I agree that the poorf old nags are badly treated and underfed just like the Dogs in LOS. But I was totally put off by the Dung that lay a few feet away from where I was laying on the beach.
Yeah we moved, and another Horse shat near us there!

Hua Hin ain't all that anyway........
