Arms-free zone project launched for the benefit of locals and tourists
Provincial Police Region 7 Bureau opens their Arms-Free Zone Project covering Hua Hin & Cha-Am districts by summoning concerned entrepreneurs
from hotels, guesthouses, and restaurants to be aware of the security policy and to confirm the legality of foreign business owners.
On 12th August 21, 2007, at 2.00 p.m., General Wirot Phaholvej, the deputy commissioner general, visited the Hua Hin City Beach Hotel to give “Arms-free zone signs” to the hotels, guesthouses, and restaurant entrepreneurs located on the beach and in tourism cities like, Cha-Am District in Phetchaburi Privince, Hua Hin, Pranburi, Paknampran and Bangsaphan Districts in Prachuap Khirikhan Province.
The mentioned entrepreneurs were asked to hang the signs in each of their establishments to inform customers that firearms were strictly forbidden in the area and on the premises. In case someone sees a person with a firearm, they can immediately inform police officers in the area.
The reason why the police officers have to be strict on the possession of firearms is to protect the Thais and foreigners in Phetchaburi and Prachuap Khirikhan Provinces. Moreover, the police officers will be continuously patrolling, checking and searching people and vehicles passing by in Naresuan Hua Hin & Cha-Am beaches from low season until high season.
General Wirot said the project was started by the Provincial Police Region 7, in order to protect and be advantageous to both Thai and foreign entrepreneurs. Moreover, there are Royal family residences’ in each area, so it is strictly prohibited to carry any arms at night. When firearms are controlled, then, robberies, murders and assaults will not take place in tourist attractions. The police officers will have their own practice to search and identify anyone who is a suspect of possessing firearms and explosives.
One of the most important points is that when the business owners or entrepreneurs suspect explosive objects or people acting in a suspicious way before or after opening hours they can immediately call for help by dialing 191. The police officers will be on 24 hours standby, with a patrolling, and investigation unit at the ready.
General Wirot said that foreigners staying in Thailand and especially tourist cities like Cha-Am and Hua Hin, must be listed in the official records data by Tourist Police and Provincial Police under responsibility of National Police Bureau. If anyone is seen to have a criminal record for any act of terrorism or a pending arrest warrant from a country that has its own extradition laws, then they will be immediately prosecuted.
In the zones of Hua Hin & Cha-Am, the tourist and provincial police have successfully controlled foreigners doing legal business without any mafia type interference. Some foreigners have also very kindly assisted the police by offering useful equipment which allows them to work efficiently.
