Crocman hits Koh Lipe and Langkawi

The Dragonlady decided her scales needed burnishing so with crocman in tow she boarded a flight to Langkawi. Once in Langkawi we deposited our luggage at a little place called the Telaga Boutique Resort. This place was chosen mainly for its proximity to the boat harbour where we would be boarding our ferry to Koh Lipe. I didn't get any pics of this joint but it was nice and clean with good sized air con rooms and a nice pool area. It set us back about 2000 baht for room and brekky.

But more on Langkawi when we return. Now we were off to Koh Lipe on this thing,

The trip between the two islands takes a little under an hour and a half and on both legs of our journey the seas were not angry. It actually takes longer to get through immigration on both sides of the border than it does to do the trip. Once we got there we settled into our new camping ground on Pattaya beach.
    The Akira Beach Resort.

We got one of those rooms that has direct access to the billabong. The resort had two nice pools.

The Akira is one of the more upmarket resorts on the island and set us back about 6500 baht per night.

We had read a lot about Koh Lipe and it's amazing beaches and waters. It definitely didn't let us down in that respect. The sands on Pattaya beach would rival those of White Beach on Boracay and the waters would rival some of the South Pacifics best.

    The end of sunset beach.

    Sunset Beach.

There are quite a few different beaches on the island and the Dragon Lady left tail marks on most of them. The most popular beaches are Sunset beach and Sunrise beach(Pattaya). These beaches are pretty much at opposing ends of walking street.

    Sunrise beach.

This beach is at the bottom of a cliff upon which is perched a watering hole most favoured by the fire breather.

    A few more beach shots.

You're fat,Ill fro you in the river

Top spot to relax Ratcha, but you want to get there in the next few years before the place really takes off.

So Koh Lipe is just not for the well heeled, indeed no. It caters in a big way for your gap year travellers and Those wanting the "true" Thai experience.

    Backpackers delight.

There are a few small bars dotted along the various beaches.

^ It is an expensive little island Terry. A small one was about 85-90 baht.

Most of the younger set would descend on the 7-11 around sunset and drink on the beach.

    ^

Yes, I've had friends go there and report back regards the cost of things.

But it's out in the middle of nowhere so it's to be expected innit.

    Same with any secluded Island.

If one wants cheap, don't leave Khao San Road.

Pretty much sums it up. Everything on the island, except maybe the seafood, is imported from the mainland.

Because of the coral around the island, the larger boats can't get in so there is a steady stream of long tails ferrying goods to the shore.

This tends to make the place look a lot busier than it actually is.

It is also a favourite drop in spot for the cruising set. You get a lot of large catamarans here. Some of them we saw again at Cenang beach when we got back to Langkawi.

    A life I dream of.

    Some local artwork

    And the local rubbish truck.

All the rubbish on the island is taken out to a large barge parked off shore and then shipped to the mainland.

In a good initiative, every Monday an organised rubbish collection takes place. All the volunteers that take part are supplied with water, lunch and a free t-shirt.

Something that could be copied elsewhere in Asia.

A couple more beach shots before we head back to Malaysia.

Koh Lipe is an island of incredible beauty which is on the cusp of transferring from a lazy, laid back destination to one of fancy resorts and new bars.

Currently the highlight of nightlife is movie night which a couple of resto/bars run once or twice a week. But the big money is on the way in. At present though the predominantly budget travellers on the island are not prepared to pay the high prices in these newer establishments. This will change.

Next we have to go through immigration again, board the ferry and head back to Langkawi for a week.

We were there for 8nights and I can't recall the power dropping out at all. Even the water supply smelt alright and no sewage smells.

I think the islanders gave themselves a kick in the arse regarding the environment and realised how much it is worth to them.

Mind you when you go for a stroll through the back blocks you do find the usual rubbish heaps.

You fly down to Hat Yai or Trang then get to Pak Bara and hop on the ferry.

Pak Bara is the only place that offers an all year ferry service. The rest all shut down for the low season because of high seas.

Very nice indeedy; next time I pop back to Thailand, if I don't get arrested and sent for re-education, then I'm going - thanks, Crocman. MKaybe do a tad of diving too; just an easy one in me old age, a little 45 minute 15 metre reef dive close to the beach if there's something like that.
    Cycling should be banned!!!

Old Firey says gidday back at ya.

Thank god she's got a good job cos' I lost mine when we were in LOS. Some prick called me at 4.00 am and told me in a rather cheery way that he had just been appointed as Administrator of the company and he needed me to return my laptop, iPhone and iPad.

I replied in a not so cheery way that it was 4.00am and I was in LOS and he could go fark himself.

Anyhoo started a new job today so all good.

Mrs B would love seafood on offer here, quite well priced as well.

So after Koh Lipe we hopped back on the ferry and headed back to Langkawi and our new camping grounds.

    The Meritus Pelangi Beach Resort.

The accomodation was in the style of traditional Malay long houses.

    Quite nice rooms.
