You're welcome, bld. If you do go to Marinduque (you'll have to ride the ferry from Lucena port) and will have a stop over in Manila, inform me. I may go to Manila for some sisig & San Mig lite w/ your family, and get some shopping done too!

@croc & bld, another island that is up & coming in that same region is Caramoan island. It's near Camarines Sur, so a bit farther away from Mnl than Calaguas island. A couple of my friends have been there. Compared with Calaguas, Calaguas is more wild (tents, huts, mangroves, no running water), while Caramoan is more developed. It has resorts with a/c & showers, but I think no 5-star hotel chains. So for flashpackers, Caramoan would appeal more, than nearby Calaguas or Anawangin island which is off the coast of Zambales. I haven't been to Anawangin or Caramoan but some friends/colleagues have.

    Cheers!

Got a couple of mates living in marinduque so perhaps a catch up with them, thanks for all your Philippine updates Katie.
A man after my own heart BLD.

Sorry to hear about work situation. As you know I had to change employers earlier in the year and so far it has worked out not too bad, even re-couped the money I was owed by the last company. Problem is the older I get the harder it is to settle and I start to think about sitting on that beach you are looking for.

As you said there are still some great options out there. Just put the finishing touches together for our trip next year.

We've booked 4 nights in Bangers, 13 in Samui, 8 in Khao lak and to finish off we are heading back to Kata noi for 4 nights. We are travelling with our Kiwi mates again so should be a good Craic.

It's all still a fair way off but if your looking for somewhere to be next June/July give us a shout.
You're fat,Ill fro you in the river

That sounds ideal for the likes of BLD and myself Katie.

The Dragonlady and I were having a look at Bantayan island as a possible destination. Have you been there?

Would also appreciate your thoughts on a retirement location for a couple of Aussie expats.

We are tossing up the idea of moving to Asia at some stage to retire.

Hi croc, I haven't been to Bantayan island. I don't even know where it is! Lol. Will find out later.

Re: retirement locations, hmm, do those Aussies have Pinay wives? If yes, then I would guess that they would choose a location near her place. But if none, then the whole country, or world, is their oyster! Or pearl - there was a giant pearl which was recently featured in the news, from Palawan. I think it's in the PI thread.

But kidding aside, hmm. Maybe Tagaytay, if they want to be in Luzon & a bit south of Manila? The temps in Tagaytay are usually in the 20s (celsius) all year round, so it's nicely cool. Manila folks go there for day trips or weekends to escape from the heat.

In the Visayas, maybe somewhere near Iloilo city or Cebu city? They would still be close to the beach and be near airports. Those cities have malls & shops too, so they wouldn't be too far away in the boondocks. I've been to Iloilo but not to Cebu.

The good thing is they wouldn't have much problems with the language! The bad thing thst the food is sh*t, as most say. Lol! As to security, I think Visayas is relatively safe from kidnappings & insurgency.

Friend of mine retired many years ago in Baguio where his wife is from. He loves the place.

^Baguio is up north, in the mountains. Also a good place to retire, IMHO. It's cool the whole year round, bcos of altitude. Arouns 2-3 hrs from Clark airport. Lots of fresh veggies, as most of the 'cold temp' vegs like cabbage, carrots, cauliflower, lettuce & broccoli sold in Manila come from those parts. Strawberries too. Last May, I passed by Baguio on the way to Sagada, traffic was terrible. Prolly a bit like Chiang Mai that it's being overdeveloped.

The Dragonlady is a kiwi,Katie, so if we ever make it to retirement over there it will just be a couple of old and very wrinkly whities.

I've actually had a look at Ilo Ilo city and several other spots in the Visayas and it looks like decent destination.

^lol. I hope you won't be wearing Speedos in Bantayan or Malapascua island, croc! The natives there might be shocked!

I think you've been to more islands here than I have. I had to look at a map to find the above-mentioned islands. Re: Bantayan, I saw some resorts on the map, so it would proll siut your flashpacker tastes.

Re: the dragon lady, if I read her correctly from your descriptions, I think she will need to live near some shops. So pick a relatively big city, if it's in the Visayas. From what I've seen of Ilo-ilo & Antique provinces, life there is slower paced than in Manila - which may be good for retirees.

Cheers! Sorry for typos, frm fone

Never been to malapascua but they tell me it's a bit like boracay was 30 years ago. It's a little bit hard to get to though. So probably not really a retirement spot, why not check out dumaguette croc. Nice little town and has airport and inter island shipping so you can bounce over to Cebu city and surrounding islands if you need to re supply the vitals, very central if you want to reside in the visayas. The visayas would be my choice if I was to retire in the philippines

^One of my bosses is from Dumaguete. She plans to go back there in a few years when she retires. I can ask her some stuff abt the city if anyone is interested. I agree that Dumaguete seems centrally located, and it doesn't get much typhoons unlike Samar or some of the eastern islands. I've only been to Bacolod, which is the capital of the other province, Negros Occidental. Dumaguete is the capital of Negros Oriental.

Funny thing abt the name of that island, Negros. The Spanish colonizers must've had a hoot in naming that island. There were native Aetas/negritos there, who are similar in stature to the Aussie Aborigines, so I guess that's where the name of the island came from. Negros east & Negros west. Duh! Lol.

I think Malapascua or Bantayan islands are good for short holidays, but not as retirement spots. They're small islands & may not have enough supplies, hospitals, facilities for wrinkly whities!

Cheers! This thread has been severely derailed - sorry croc!

A little derailment never hurt anyone Katie as long as the banter is good

This all helps give me an idea of where to start looking.

As BLD has suggested Dumaguete is rather central and does seem to have the necessary infrastructure.

It is still in the future, our retirement, but it is good to start looking now for suitable places now.

But who knows it may never happen, it all depends on a lot of different factors.
