Re: retirement locations, hmm, do those Aussies have Pinay wives? If yes, then I would guess that they would choose a location near her place. But if none, then the whole country, or world, is their oyster! Or pearl - there was a giant pearl which was recently featured in the news, from Palawan. I think it's in the PI thread.
But kidding aside, hmm. Maybe Tagaytay, if they want to be in Luzon & a bit south of Manila? The temps in Tagaytay are usually in the 20s (celsius) all year round, so it's nicely cool. Manila folks go there for day trips or weekends to escape from the heat.
In the Visayas, maybe somewhere near Iloilo city or Cebu city? They would still be close to the beach and be near airports. Those cities have malls & shops too, so they wouldn't be too far away in the boondocks. I've been to Iloilo but not to Cebu.
The good thing is they wouldn't have much problems with the language! The bad thing thst the food is sh*t, as most say. Lol! As to security, I think Visayas is relatively safe from kidnappings & insurgency.
