GREAT pics. Thank you for sharing , Croc.

As the sun is almost directly overhead this time of the year I can't imagine the burn one could receive after 30 - 60 minutes swimming, snorkeling or lying on the beach 10 - 16:00.
How hot was it in the mid-day there ?

It was around 36 Celsius everyday.

It was beach in the morning and then after lunch a bit of a nap or a book read in the air-con room.

Then back out again just before dusk.

How fine is this sand in Boracay or Koh Lipe then? I remember Langkawi's Cenang beach being like talcum powder.

The sand on Cenang is indeed fine and that stretch of beach is probably Langkawis only saving grace.

The sand in Koh Lipe is even finer and Boracay another step above that. The sand there stays cool underfoot no matter the time of day or temperature.

A friend and wife built a very nice resort on Koh Lipe a few years back. Have since sold it and moved to mainland so kids had a proper school. Stayed there a week. Great place.

Thank god she's got a good job cos' I lost mine when we were in LOS. Some prick called me at 4.00 am and told me in a rather cheery way that he had just been appointed as Administrator of the company and he needed me to return my laptop, iPhone and iPad.

I replied in a not so cheery way that it was 4.00am and I was in LOS and he could go fark himself.

Anyhoo started a new job today so all good.

Mrs B would love seafood on offer here, quite well priced as well.
oh shit, I better not show her this thread, she will go into seafood craving mode until I relent and book a ticket, Glad to see you got a new gig, did you see that one coming or a nasty surprise?

Mate tell Mrs B I was scoffing down soft shell crab, horseshoe crab and mantis prawns. We had a lot of hit and miss with food on the island. Some good some not so.

As for the job, did not see it coming. They owe me about $10,000 but I will recover that fairly easy. The new gig is more hands on,so this old body is going to be taking a bit of a hammering.

    So back to Langkawi.

Not a place that inspired me honestly.

We have done cable cars in other places. And as for Eco tours through the mangroves, well I can do that 30 minutes from home. The Dragonlady tried her very best to spend my hard earned on something, anything but to no avail. She walked away empty handed from what is supposed to be the duty free hub of Malaysia. They really have missed the mark.

The Meritus is a very large resort that knows how to deliver. It employs good staff that give very good service and for what is a definite first for us we saw no reason to leave the place for food or drink.

When we did venture out it was to visit the largest town on the island, Kuah town. Sorry to say it was another truly uninspirational place.

Crocman in front of the Langkawi sea eagle.

    [/IMG]

Not too sure, think it may be a restaurant.

To finish off, the streets here are some of the most broken we have encountered anywhere and the smell from the drains would put Bali to shame.

    The sewer.

These grills are spaced about twenty metres apart along the streets and boy they don't half pen and ink.

    Broken street

    And my last whinge.

We went to Underwater world for a look and not to be outdone by their northern neighboursthese Malays love to stick it to Johnny farang as well.

I know some people may think I'm being harsh, and I've read a few reviews on TD about Langkawi which paint the place in a good light but other than one truly spectacular stretch of sand there is nothing that would drag me back there.

Good one croc I also wasn't really inspired with langkawi, we stayed in town which was an absolute boring place fuck all going on there , the best place to get a drink was the yacht club , plenty of farangs park there boats there but they were all a bunch of wankers who wouldn't talk to you unless you were a " yachtie"

Actually, I had a nice holiday in Langkawi- at a villa in a place called the Datai. Not cheap. Never went to the town, although I do have a certain ability to get on with scruffy asian townships. What I liked about the place was the virgin jungle covering much of the island. Saw the biggest damn water monitor I've ever seen there- thought I was about to get munched by a croc! (no, not you crocman). But that was a fair while back, in 1996-97, and the Datai is away from the main tourist beach- and a long way from the main town. Basically, in the untouristed part of the island.

Anyway, nice one crocman. Koh Lipe is one island place in Thailand I am still curious to check out- as you say, best get there quick.

To us the island seemed like it was stuck in some thing. It appeared that the place has tried to move forward but either through shit planning, lack of imagination or just sheer apathy everything has stalled.

Where ever we went things were either brand new, old and broken or just plain fucked. When the place was named a duty free zone it was given the green light to develop into a world class area. But when you see duty free cookware shops lining the streets, it leaves you scratching your head.

We too had an encounter with a water monitor. It slipped its way into the pool and scared the shit out of some very pale northern visitors who thought it was a baby croc.

    I was slightly offended

    Nice thread bump.

I didn't see this thread when it was posted in April. I checked the dates & it was when I did my short backpacking trip to Laos & Burma.

Thanks for the pics, crocman! Nice to know that among all the beaches that you've been to, Boracay sand is still tops! It's very touristy now though, so it's prolly not for those who like their islands pristine & wild. Boracay can also be done on a budget, contrary to popular belief that it's a bit pricey.
    Cheers & hope all's well w/ you & yours.

Hey Katie, the sand on Boracay is incomparable.

However I did meet some young fellas from neighbouring Carabao who boasted of having sand just as good as Boracays. So the Dragonlady and I took them up on their challenge and off we set.

We hopped on the young blokes bancqa and headed off across the strait in rather lumpy seas in search of a sea cave supposedly known only to him and his family.

Upon arrival we scurried and squeezed over and through some extremely sharp rocks until we reached a point in this cave where a very young stalagmite was forming, and Lo and behold the sand on the floor of the cave at this point was exactly the same as Boracays.

I felt very humble to be in the presence of something so simple to me yet produced so much pride in these young blokes.

We spent the rest of the day with these guys and their families spear fishing for lunch and exploring their part of the island. It was a truly rememborable day and as it was my birthday one of the young lads climbed a tree and got me a birthday coconut.

My daughter and her boyfriend will be visiting Boracay and Mactan over the Xmas period. I hoped they enjoy the PI's as much as the Dragonlady and I do.

Cheers, crocman. I'm glad you had a memorable bday. You even had a special, right off the tree bday coconut!

How's your new job coming along? Are you & the dragonlady still planning to go to PI later this year?

Re: your daughter, I hope she has a nice time w/ her bf this Xmas season. Just a warning, though. That's peak season here, and flights might be delayed due to 'air traffic situation'. I've experienced traveling during xmas season. The airports, seaports, bus statuons are all full. Early this year, I traveled w/ a friend from.Antique to Caticlan port. Spent new year w/ her family in Antique prov. The Caticlan port was sooooo full & she waited in line the whole day, while i was in charge of watching our bags. We were 'chance passengers' - stupid of us for not pre-booking on the boats. Lol

Anyway, I'm sure your daughter's flights will be pre-booked, but as I've said, there might be delays. A friend's flight (manila-kalibo) was delayed for 4 hrs, just this year, due to air traffic. Not enough runways & tarmac here, I think. The situation might be as chaotic as Holy Week, which you've experienced.

If I'm available (i might have a trip also) & if your daughter will stay in manila for a few days, give me a holler. I might be available for a free tour guiding of Intramuros or Rizal Park! Or even just a short meet & greet.

    Cheers!

Hey Katie, you are so right about delayed flights and full to the brim ferry terminals.

The Dragonlady and I make sure whenever we fly PAL to bring a good book and lots of patience to the airport.

We were hoping to visit PI this year but as you mentioned I am now in a new job and have to get my new employer used to the idea of me taking a lot of leave. We have got 5 weeks booked for Thailand next June but we were hoping to slip a quick trip to Bantayan and malapascua in between times.

I'm not too sure if my daughter has any time in Manila but I will check. I know she is flying from KL to Kalibo direct.

Looking forward to reading more of your adventures.

Hi crocman, no probs if your daughter won't pass by Manila. If they can skip Manila airport altogether, I think that would be better for their holiday, given that it's peak xmas season.

While watching our bags & waiting for my friend to buy our ferry.tickets, I saw a grp od foreigners being herded from the interior of Caticlan port to an office of a nearby tour agency. This was Jan 2nd and I think the foreigners were surprised at the volume of ppl lining up & waiting for tickets. Being Jan 2nd, everyone wanted to go back to Batangas or Manila since the holidays were over and ppl needed to get back to work. Friend & I arrived at the.port around noon. She was only able to buy a ticket by 8 pm & we boarded the 10 pm very. Very chaotic, but it was an experience to remember. There were some foreign backpackers who also didn't prebook and were also in the queue. I think they didn't expect that it would be so chaotic & full of ppl.

Re: air traffic situation, I've had 2 recent experiences. My return flight, Cagaysn de Oro to Manila, was delayed 1.5 hrs due to air traffic in Mnl. Another one, my recent flight to KL, the plane was on the runway for ~45 min due to air traffic as well. My friend's Manila to Kalibo flight, they boarded the plane 4 hrs delayed. Then the plane waited on the runway for another 2 hrs. So total of 6 hrs delay! All due to air traffic. This was in summer of this year. So tell your daughter to bring lots of patience! Or buy those little cookies, called "paciencia" biscuits. Lol

I went to Calaguas island in the Bicol region (eastern seaboard) this summer. It's still semi wild, we slept in huts & tents. No shower, just small lean-tos with pail, bucket & artesian wells. Mostly local tourists; I think I saw only 1 whitey at the time. Sand was white & fine, but not as fine as Boracay. I didn't make a pic thread of it (since I'm lazy/busy/net is bad), but you could consider going there if you can 'rough it'. There's no aircon in the small huts & lights at night are run by generators. There are small sari-sari stores selling beer & other drinks. Our food was part of the tour package. I think only tour packages are allowed there, but I could be wrong. It took ~2 hrs to get to the island from the mainland by boat. Along the way, I was glad to see some mangrove trees still intact. Didn't see that in Bora anymore. I hope the mangroves are preserved in Calaguas.

    Cheers!

Thanks for that advice regarding the ferry Katie, I have passed that onto my daughter.

As far as crocman holidaying in a lean to, surely you jest.

I believe you have viewed a pic or two of crocman and would therefore be aware of my vintage.

I'm afraid my days of roughing it are sadly now over which why I avidly follow your pic threads. Don't get me wrong, the Dragonlady and I do enjoy the way we travel these days but by booking into 5star hotels it means we aren't first people to have been there.

    Cheers.

Hi crocman, I didn't really think that you were the type to sleep in tents & wash up in lean-tos, since you're more of the Rex Hotel type. However, I must say that even if you do stay in 5-star hotels, S.Landreth still holds the trophy for best accoms.

Yeah, I just threw the info abt Calaguas as a 'just in case' you're interested. Re: your vintage, well, some ppl of longer vintage still climb mountains or run marathons, so I didn't know if you were of that type.

I may have a new adventure soon... just nearby. Depends on how it will pan out. Will take pics, if ever. But don't know if I'll have the time or inclination to post them!

Btw, a colleague arrived from the airport today. His flight was delayed for an hour due toair traffic. The flight before his was delayed 3 hrs, also for the same reason. PI needs more runways. Sigh...

Cheers! All the best to you & yours.

Old firey is most certainly a lady but when she starts swinging that pointy tail and rustling her scales, well then it is time to do a Usain.

Good stuff croc, like yourself I'm to damn old to fook about. I need aircon and cold beer and lots of it. I might find myself out of a job pretty soon due to economic circumstancesI'm thinking of sitting on a nice beach somewhere while I contemplate my options, can't do S landreth style though. He's a decadent fooker but never mind there are still some great accomadation options to be found all over Asia. Got a couple of mates living in marinduque so perhaps a catch up with them, thanks for all your Philippine updates Katie.
