    Phi Phi Island......Shithole

I have just returned from a quick break on Phi Phi . It was my first visit in about 8 years and I can honestly say the place has gone to the dogs. The island is mobbed with 18-25 year old backpackers many looking pissed or drugged out their heads. There was kids running wild vomiting, pissing and fighting. The beach which is like a rubbish dump was one big party zone. There was pounding music at all hours and unconscious teenagers lying sleeping in the sand. There was litter everywhere and the whole place seems to stink of sewage. The price for basic accommodation is way above the going rate. 2000 baht a night for a small bungalow with a fan and cold water. As for food and drink I struggled to get a bottle of Singha for under 100 baht.
Its a sin that such a beautiful island has been destroyed by the over development and the tourist trade gone made.

The sewage smell was a feature when I was there 5 years ago as well. It was a pit back then and can't imagine what it must be like today.

Phi Phi and the surrounding region isn't a shithole.

The scum that have increasingly invaded, and subsequently ruined the area, over the last couple of decades are pieces of shit.

Reflective of what many parts of the country have become.

I never agree with Jeff on anything but the problem with these Islands is simply that they are unable to cope with the huge number of us farang who decend on them.

Add to that a Thai system that is flawed and a disaster is born.

    From October 2014.....

Special Report: Phi Phi cries for help
Officials are pleading for help in tackling the array of environmental disasters that plague the tourist-popular Phi Phi archipelago – especially its largest island, Phi Phi Don.

Considering the more than 1,000 visitors that arrive on the island daily – a number that does not include the uncounted number of tourists who arrive directly on the beaches by way of the hundreds of speedboats and yachts – it becomes clear that Phi Phi is under an enormous amount of unsustainable pressure, Ao Nang Administration Organization (OrBorTor) President Pankum Kittithonkun told the Phuket Gazette.

    RUBBISH

Phi Phi produces an average of 25 tonnes of trash a day. That numbers jumps to about 40 tonnes during the high season, Mr Pankum explained.

The abundance of rubbish is to the point that even........

Skip Thailand and head to Malaysia or the Philippines if you want quality beaches, quality tourists and quality locals.

Thailand has none of the above mentioned.

Cambodia and its islands are even worse.

    Actually,

If one wants world quality beaches head to Cape Town.

    Bloody cold water though.

But Na Basa, I'll be staying in Thailand thanks.

Bloody cold, and fairly violent too.

CT is overpriced and full of hipster cocksuckers (literally every second man is a chutney ferret). And the women - well, they're not Asian, and they over-estimate their value so they can fuck right off.

    Give me Asia any day.

So what do you call a place full of pieces of shit, Jeff?

    Oh, I forgot, 'party time'.

They threw a party to celebrate your arrival and you didn't enjoy it?.
I was there just over a year ago in low season, much nicer atmosphere. For most visitors, Thailand is party central and the lack of regulation is an attraction. I won't go to full moon parties because I know I won't enjoy the noise and drunken behaviour of young people. That's probably just the jealousy of an old fart.

If you want highly organised, environmentally friendly holidays you should probably go to Germany. Thailand has bigger issues with its society than a few drunken litter louts. I am not dismissing your disappointment, but to expect first world standards in a third world backwater is to defy the reason most people come here.

It is a bit of a mystery as to why someone would go to Phi Phi in February and be surprised by the scene described.

The place has been going to the dogs for at least fifteen years.

Where's Wayne Kerr's thread on the islands off Cambo.

Bet they're a bit nicer than the Phi Phi crud.

Just seems like a considerably less clean version of the Reeperbahn with beaches, to me. But they choose to go there. They could save money doing their drugs and whoring in a simple visit to Amsterdam's redlight district. But that isn't what it's really about, is it. To them, this is exotic.

Of course it's Exotic, many come from a freezing cold place in nasty Blighty.

They are young people on Holiday who want to Party.

I was exactly the same myself and thrashed it for years.

I'm more mature these days and care the environment.

The trouble with some of the old farts amounst us is that they have left their young years far behind and bemoan the young people of today having a bit of craik.

These old farts need to get out more.

Have you actually ever been to nasty blighty tez? Seems to me the Adelaide Hills are just as cold in winter.

Loads of backpackers come from Oz too (you and me included, back in the day). All in search of the 'exotic'. Who am I to tell them that what they are finding is just another Disneyland. If they want actual exotic, they can work it out- but lets face it, most of them just want to stay on the well beaten tourist trail, party, eat banana pancakes and drink yoghurt smoothies, do drugs & have sex, and believe they are having some kind of authentic, exotic experience. Sigh.

But yeh, I suppose old farts can't help reminiscing.

    No,

I have never been to Horrible blighty and I am never going.

I figure that if all the Pomgolians are killing themselves to get out of the Joint and reside in Thailand then I have no business at all going to that Shit hole.

Regards the rest of your post it's fairly well on the money.

Backpackers want to Party and I say good on them.

Unfortunately I'm over it, the Hang over kills me.

I live in Pattaya so I'm fully aware not to expect first world standards. Its just a shame that such a beautiful island has been destroyed by unabated tourism.
The Thais don't give a fuck as long as the baht is rolling in.
Thanks for the advice about the problems facing Thai society. I will keep that in mind the next time I fancy a trip away.

I took my son there to go snorkling. They take you to a reef area A few hundred meters off the jetty. It was hugely disappointing. The reef was dead and grey. Did the Tsunami cause that or was it always so?

Kinda wish that scene had been kept to the other side of the isthmus- Ko Samui/ Phangnan/ Tao. Let them be zoned the 'party islands', because it's a shame to see beautiful Phang Nga Bay being despoiled this way. But whatever, it's just like any another business- all about the dollar. I've heard 'The Beach' is totally trashed now too.
