Long Island Resort Lamai Beach Ko Samui.

Hi Islanders, an old pal of mine has been asking me to try and find out about a resort on Lamai Beach.

    Long Island Resort.

Run for some years by an English Guy and his Thai wife. He was called Desmond, his wife Jimi.

If anyone has any idea if the place is still operational or if Des is still on the Island or in Thailand, info would be appreciated.

I can't find any reference to the same via Google etc. no phone number or e-mail details either. He can't remember Des's surname.

All due respect Mathos that is a big ask.

Don't think any members claim to reside on Samui, only hope may be a recent visitor

From memory Dillinger could be the only one who might be able to help

Its quite strange really as even in an areas where many claim to be living not many if any offer up genuine advice when its asked.

    Good luck with it

Gus and Chazzer should be able to help.

I lived there for a few years but can't remember ever hearing of the place. That said, I was battered on Lao for the duration.

I'm here, Chas has moved to the mainland.
I have a mate that get's around the island, and I know he has friends that live down that area of Lamai beach.

I'll ask him to gather the intel.

Gus is correct. I have lived on the mainland for the last three years, but we met over a beer or two a few months back on one of my regular visits.
Depending on what your mate is looking for and his price remit, Lamai has pretty much everything anyone could want. Don't know the resort mentioned but he could do worse than end up at Gus's place.

The Island ring road is 54km long and there are hundreds and hundreds of resorts, many hidden away on minor roads. Few residents can claim to know them all.
Gus is a nice bloke and runs a great business. Thing is, he's Australian so you wouldn't understand him.

Only be there once stayed in chawang but I did ride around the ring road having a nose about, didn't realise it was 54km long though.

I do remember it being fairly well sign posted so with the beach name I reckon the resort would not be to hard to find.

Anyway lets hop Gus can give the O.P the info hes after,I read it as someone wants to know if Desmond is still about on the Island or in Thailand.

Gus has his own resort and has done many favours for forum members. It hardly seems fair that he should go out of his way to direct someone to a competing business in the same place. That's the sort of bloke he is though.

If you bothered to read the thread Dave, you may have noticed that someone has already posted a link with a map and phone number.

Saves Gus's poor old Aussie legs eh?

Yes I did have a look at though,s,

I've probably read the O.P wrong but Mathos does state that his friend would be interested to know if this Des bloke is still on the Island or indeed still in Thailand.

Sounds to me as somebody wants to find a friend rather than book a resort for a stay on the Island.

I would guess if Des no longer runs that resort there would be a much higher chance of someone asking about on Samui, rather than a phone call to trace the man.

Interested to see what info Mathos gets back.

You are a great Googler Dill, were you a detective in your last life?

That article was from May 2002, and seeming as the only other hit was the one booking site that may or may not be current, I may have to get off my arse and go and check it out.

My local informant seems to think that it is not there anymore, but they may have said that just because they didn't know.

Please wait for the next thrilling episode. Coming soon.

Thanks a lot everybody for the attention.

    It's decent of you.

    You especially Gus.

I knew the resort myself, last visited there about
2004/5. It had deteriorated a great deal. Des was
meant to be running a small bar himself on Chaweng
    his wife the resort.

But as mentioned a downhill slide was very obvious.

We checked out after a couple of nights or so.

The friend who had or has some personal interest in
wanting to talk with Des knew I had stayed there.

I met him there in 1999 (January).

I don't know what he is actually searching for, didn't
seem right to ask him, I thought it fair enough to make
a simple stab in the dark on these pages knowing how
so many members really get about throughout Asia in general.

It might have been closed up, demolished even, but there
was definitely good potential there for somebody to go to
town and establish a good business.

I was looking for some photographs of Long Island,
not come across them as yet, probably on my older PC.

I'm sure this is an old one I took on Lamai many years ago.

It can rain there too, when it has mind to do so.

You might just appreciate the concrete or
tarmac roads they have there now.

Once upon a time, they didn't!

No he's not, that isn't the guy he's interested in finding.

I have recently heard that Long Island Resort is all closed?

    Anyone know for sure?

Cheers Gus;- Looks to me like it's done and dusted. He sent me an e-mail, apparently there are or where some strange petite beach huts
about a hundred yards away from the same on the beach which were quite well known in:--

    'The Backpacker Realm'

I bet they are a torture room looking at them.

There was talk last time I was in that location of most of the old places going under the hammer
and being flattened to make way for new contemporary resorts. I imagine this has happened in the
    case of 'Long Island'

It was only a few hundred yards along the beach from 'The Detox Spa' which had a bit of Television fame
once upon a time with a few names flushing their colons out for a fortnight and swallowing juice drinks.

That must have been a brilliant holiday, the last few days of the holiday entailed examining what hey got
rid of and sorting out all sorts of junk.

Kim Wilde Daughter of 50's - 60's Rock Star Marty Wild.

    Would later write:-

A couple of years ago I was in a bad way healthwise. I was suffering from back pain and was prone to
bronchial infections and viruses. So I was delighted when I was asked to go on a ten-day detox at the
Koh Samui Health Spa in Thailand for a TV programme.

The regime was pretty dramatic. I had no food for almost seven days and survived on herbal drinks.
But then I was on a sunny desert island and had three-hour massages every day, which cured my back pain.
I did try colonic irrigation which was fine, but not something I'd recommend now.

Although I was intrigued by the idea that you could service your body like a car,
there are gentler ways of cleansing your system.

Thanks again Gus, it's probably another colonic irrigation spa now.

Hi Baba, what exactly put you in the direction of Desmond Skene-Catling?

My friend Graham was asking, wondered if there was any reason for this.
