Interesting or not, i managed 9 pushups.

It would be interesting to see how many of you 100 push ups a night (American army style) can swim a LONG DISTANCE of a few hundred yards without resorting to press ups to prove that you are the meanest most masculine divers that never swam a length.

How is a push up going to help when you're in the water?

    Shitty instructor.
Actually very good, very knowledgeable, strict about the right stuff just relaxed about other stuff. The week after taught advanced course also very good.

My point was that you can be in reasonably good shape from a fitness standpoint and not be able to swim 200m if you are not a regular lap swimmer.

Well this morning I did 250 yards (over 200m) of lap swimming without stopping. I swam freestyle using one breath for every two strokes. I probably could have done another 50 yards without too much hassle and another 100 if I wanted to push it.

Thanks to all (especially Pes and Jizzy) for the encouragment.

The secret (that worked for me anyway), is to just swim laps until you get the breathing down pat and continue to work out the swim muscles.

I will probably swim laps another two or three times before I hit Koh Tao, so I should be able to swim 300m or so freestyle.

    Best Regards to All,

This morning I did 350 yards without too much trouble. Technique (rithymic breathing) seems to be the key.

Sensible move to improve your swimming.

Hope you enjoy your diving, i'm sure you will feel more confident now you know you can swim a bit.

This thread prompted a reminiscence of sorts on my part.

In the Solomons, where I learned to dive all those years ago is still run by the same Canadian guy.(received an email reply). Even after strife and civil war, still going.

Great place to dive for anyone thinking about a trip. Lots of relics on the sea floor and even a few on the land.

Thanks. You are right about being more confident. This morning I finished my last swim lesson and did the pick-up-the-brick and underwater 40ft swims without any problems. I also did a quick 200yard swim. My swim instructor (a really hot 20-year old girl) was really pleased with my performance (Actually while doing the underwater swims, she was the 40ft marker I had to swim to. No matter how much I was hurting for breath, I knew if I kept going I would soon run into her gorgeous legs and mid-section. A real motivator).

I've seen the swim down several ways.

When I took my PADI cert about 18 years ago, I took in in the swimming pool. I was given my choice of a particular distance (which I am unable to recall but it was a considerable distance) with no time frame or a specified distance (which I am also unable to remember but considerably less than that of the untimed distance) within a designated time frame.

A friend of mine took his PADI Cert swim in the Andemann Sea off a dive boat after one of his dives. He was told to swim around the dive boat. There was no specific time in which he had to accomplish the swim.

I would not worry about the swim. I'm rather sure that the instructor is just interested in making sure that you can make a swim of a reasonable distance and as others have noted, there is interest in having you pass.

Finished my Open Water Cert a few days ago. The 200 meter swim was a joke. We had to do 10 laps in a pool less 5 meters long.

Out of the four of us swimming, I was the only one who could really do a proper freestyle. The others just splashed around and floated on their backs etc.

The only problem I had was that I was too bouyant. When I suited up I had to carry 9.2 kilos of weight in order to have negative bouyancy. Hell of a load.

Still thanks to all who have advice.

I made the 4 dives without too much effort (except for surface swimming on the first two dives - rough seas).

Only complaint was the dive sites were way too crowded. At times it was like getting on a subway as divers from different boats queues up for descents.

    Still a good experience.

This thread came to my mind yesterday, after not swimming for a few months apart from a splash around in a hotel pool I went and had a proper swim in a nice pool. Done 15 or 17 lengths of a 50 meter pool but then I could tell there was a storm brewing so I got out.

Hammered it down about 10 minutes after I got indoors.

    Congratulations Rick.
Well, luckily I didn't have any tortoises on me at the time...

We did the Japanese Gardens, Twins, Chumpon Pinnacle, and
White Rock (or something). The visability was decent on the second two dives but a little murky on the first two.

I was a little bummed that my instructor wouldn't let me use my Hero3 (which I bought especially for the trip). He said that for cert it wasn't allowed (plus they wanted me to buy their DVD of the dives - which I did not).

Still Big Blue would get a recommendation from me.

I was wearing a 3mm shortie that I've had since about 1971. Amazingly it still fits!

That is a lot of weight. Sure you had all the air out of your BC? If you are having that much trouble with buoyancy you might might want to ditch the 3 mm shortie and get a dive skin- if cold is a problem get a fleece-lined one and/or wear a hood.

    LOL - neoprene is awesome.

But I would be concerned about diving with someone carrying nearly 10Kgs. Did they put that all on the weight belt?

Nope. I would not let a student doing open water take a camera either........

Amazing that people still use weight belts (except for freediving). Taking that on and off underwater used to be the most difficult part of the OW test. That and figuring out the tables (dating myself a bit here).

Neither would I- you're being tested on your skills in order to receive a certification- you don't need to be dicking around with a camera at the same time and have it pull your attention away from the task at hand- once you're certified there will be plenty of time for that.

My camera has a head mount and push the button once and then you forget about it. It wouldn't interefere with of the mask flooding or regulator swapping at all. Especially for the last two dives when basically all we did was dick around anyway.

    Just MO of course.

Yep the 200 meter swim you should be able to knock off in 5 minutes. Not much of a workout imho.

Just for reference the PADI dive master certificate requires you to swim 400 meters free style without stopping and 800 meters with mask, snorkel, fins within 16 minutes.

My personal health benchmark is to be able to freestyle 800 meters inside of 30 minutes.
If you can do that you're reasonably fit.
