    Scuba Diving Insurance

I want to dive, and I want the kids from my school to dive. however the insurance does not cover diving, not even for an extra premium, and the dive shop only offers liability insurance. Therefore I need to find dive insurance that is fairly cheap either individually or for a group. Anybody know of any insurance in Thailand or international insurance that covers people resident in Thailand diving in Thailand?

DAN Insurance : Dive Accident, Trip, Dive Equipment, Camera, Group Term Life. I used these people in my diving days. Not sure whether you need to be a member or not though

^ You do need to be a member, and not particularly cheap (worth every penny, but not cheap).

A better place to try maybe the Scubaboard? There is a dedicated Thailand Sub-Forum there that is very active, and I know at least one teacher who is on that board, and so may have some ideas.

thanks for the quick replies. I am going to join Dan personally as they seem to offer a good service but they are a bit pricey for people that may dive once or twice a year. I'll have a look on scubaboard as well. Damn kids and their parents...

    ^ Who is the Instructor?

Whoever it is, make doubly sure that they have the appropriate civil liabilities Insurance (for PADI, it is not compulsory for Instructors working in Thailand) - so you really need to check.

Also make sure they are in current teaching status.

Also be careful in choosing boat and where to dive. I took my 70 year old dad on a dive trip and the entire group were left floating around for 45 minutes in open water after the set dive time. The thai crew "forgot". Divers occasionally get caught in the propellers of dive boats too.

Having said that the hyberbaric chamber team in Patong, Phuket were brilliant following a "hit" in my shoulder after a deco dive put me in their care for 24 hours. Total cost was around $2500 us, not bad considering there was a doctor at the centre and a nurse in the chamber with me. (male nurse!). I was insured with American Express who paid up in full, including two nights' hotel in Bangkok and a medical check at Bumrungrad. They even offered a nurse to accompany me on the flight home to London, which seemed a bit unnecessary.

Weirdly they didn't even question the claim. I had been on HMS Vestal at 70-72 metres, yet the policy restricted me to 30 metres. Perhaps they got feet and metres confused - anyway, no complaints! I joined DAN for future diving but never needed to claim.
