Koh Tao PADI Cert in January

I was thinking about doing a PADI certification at Koh Tao. I was wondering about the weather conditions in early Jan. Are the waters pretty rough at that time, or have they settled down.

Due to other committments (MIL birthday), I won't be able to do it any later than the first week of January.

Also what is a good place to stay and a good dive school.

I understand for an Open Water certification I should expect to pay about 9800 baht. Is that amount reasonable.?

    Thanks.

Best to contact the dive shops in the area and ask about conditions and dates. But yes, 10K is about normal for an open water certificate. (Be aware that you often need to keep at least a day spare to make sure you get all your dives in, weather notwithstanding.

January normally is fine. I doubt you will have any trouble weather wise. Drop me a line earlier to the time and will arrange some discount for you over there.

Several bongs and some hyperventilation before you dive always enhance the experience, especially when the nitrogen narcosis starts kicking in down 30 meters
Not sure what the weather will be like or how much it will cost

I worked in diving in the area years ago, January as I remember was one of the better months.

I did most of my time on the Andaman side which was Oct/Nov - Mar/Apr, Samui where I lived and worked (but it was taking boats to KT) was a slightly earlier season as I remember it.

January is fine weather wise. I have done quite a few dives with Bans dive centre. They have rooms as well.

Not a lot for the family to do on Koh Tao,probably better to leave them on Samui.Or you could do your OW from Samui but that involves a couple of hours travel by boat each day.I did my advanced leaving from Bophut each day and it wasn't a drag.If you do choose the second option I can recommend the Dive Academy.I found them to be professional and very helpful.

    Big Fella,

I'll be sure and get in touch with you in the next month or so.

    Storm1fishing,

I have heard good things about Bans as well.

    Crocman,

Thanks for the advice about the family. That's one of the reasons I thought this would be a good thing timing wise. My Thai wife wants to spend more time at her mother's and I can only take about 5 days max at her house (nice lady, but just not much for me to do).

My wife will probably meet me in Koh Samui a few days after I finish the PADI certification.

Thanks to all for the good advice.

    Regards,

    RickThai
