    Underwater camera.

Did two early morning dives this morning at Boar Fish Reef and Popes Eye in Port Philip Bay. It was a bit chilly at 18 degrees but beautiful colours for a temperate dive and even got a small tow from a large Banjo Shark. Unfortunately I have no pictures to post which brings us to the question, can anyone please recommend a good underwater camera that would be suitable for a beginner yet still take great shots.
Being of tartan stock it is sometimes pointed out to me that I may be a tad thrifty and so when making a suggestion I would ask you to maybe keep that in mind.I think up to $ 350us would suffice.Thank you.

For the money you want to spend, I don't think you will beat the Panasonic Lumix TS3
It can go to depths of 40 feet and is meant to take some good shots and has HD video capture

    Around 280- 300 USD

40 feet is 12 meters - thats pretty shallow for most divers - PADI basic cert level gives you 18 meters.....think the verdict is still out on housing-less cameras for divers (as opposed to snorkelers etc)

this site has some good reading:

    http://www.divephotoguide.com/page/s...rwater-camera/

I seem to recall that olympus has some reasonable entry level cameras and housings. Alternatvely, if you already have a camera, see if there is a suitable housing for it.

be warned - its a boody addictive and expensive hobby - plus, as they always say, its not a question of whether your camera housing will flood - it is a question of when.

Have seen a Intova IC14 and another called Go-pro in my starting price range. Any feedback on either of those? And yes I can see how this is going to get pricey.

No idea on these. Try having a look around here:

Its a fairly ok board, and can be fairly helpful.

While waiting for an eyetest a few months back, i looked in the free mags and there was an Ad for Go pro Hero, mounted camera's. real professional looking. Thought about getting one if i was to do some extreme sports in Asia.

Ive found the website today, looked for the camera bit and the specs for underwater is 60m.

    Following a bit further

    http://gopro.com/support/faq-hd-hero...proof-to-180ft
Can the camera be used for diving?

Yes, the camera housing is rated waterproof down to 180 ft (60m), and our head strap mount is a great way to wear the camera on your forehead just above the diving mask. Please note that due to the curved lens of the waterproof housing for the HD HERO camera and standard def Wide HERO cameras, you will notice a slight loss of sharpness with underwater images. We are developing a flat glass adapter / housing specifically for underwater use, thus allowing for the same image sharpness that you enjoy with your GoPro camera above water.

Think the bit I have underlined is quite important. personally, would not chose to go with a camera that already has a drawback built in.
