koh kong not to be feared if you keep your cool (you wont be killed:)
As you exit the civilization, walk around where there seems to be some huts. buildings, whatever. That would be cambodian offcials. Might change over time. Now its a gravel road and many people are going to ask you to spend your money. Ignore them. This gets first timers every time, well, upi are tired fwom the journey... seems easy say ok help me, but DO NOT GIVE YOUR PASSPORT TO EVERYONE, EXCEPT FOR THE OFFICIAL INSIDE THE BOX. They will handle it and you will get it back and you will be ok.
Not to scare anyone, but last time I crossed nov 2010 there semed to be lots of more rough looking guys around. Better secure your taxi beforehand. I did and I was screwed, Apex hotel said free pick-up from border, its on their website, but this drug selling bastard showed up. now you can trust only yourself in cambodia you get it
rough types at the border
Sorry to hear about these rough types at the border.
They probably migrated from Poipet for the high season
and after will leave.
The Koh Kong border is still a much safer place than the Poipet border.
The solution is just to walk steadily through no mans land
under the barrier and up the stairs to the left
where is the immigration and passport control.
Ignore all conversation or just tell them that you are not going to Koh Kong
but have come only for a visa run even if you have not.
It is hard to understand why the Khmers are allowed into
no mans land while the Thais are not.
Stop occasionally and look behind. If any are following
just tell them to go away. They soon give up.
They only want to scam and not to rob.
There is a so called health check and someone may want to
take your temperature with a dirty ear insertion.
Respectfully decline and don't give him any money.
If he is on duty he will give a yellow paper
without which they won't let you in.
Ridiculous when you look around at all that unwashed unchecked
sea of humanity.
After the paperwork walk on through and enjoy a sit down, a coca cola and a cigarette
at one of the many stalls on the left.
They are now allowed to use tables and chairs.
Still tell them that you have come only for a visa run.
There is the motodop (motor cycle taxi) stand.
Many will approach but there is time to make a selection.
Should not cost more than 50 THB but now they may try for 100 THB.
The motodop should pay the bridge toll of 12 THB.
Even the minibus from APEX hangs out there.
Even a taxi if you have much luggage.
Better not to have too much luggage in Cambodia.
Travel light.
