Of course it's not. Especially if your French or Merkin.Quote:

Samuel Johnson said: "Patriotism is the last refuge of the scoundrel."
What he should have said is patriotism is the last refuge of the retarded.
Personally, I've no national pride (except see below).
I tend to view myself as a person of a world. For me national identity and therefore patriotism/national pride are anachronistic. The future of the world is about global cooperation or as a species we are well and truly fucked. People who seek to instill a sense of national pride, do so for reasons of their own, which are often not for the benefit of the people they've sought to rouse.
Having said all of this wise ass shite. I bloody well wish England would win the bleedin world cup just once in my lifetime. Tossers.
I'm conflicted. :)
Very well said Stronters, I agree that mixing is the way forward. Interbreeding results in national pride as well as a lot of other default follies we have. Some of the worlds most successful people are a result of the best DNA from both countries whereas pikeys, abbos, the Windsors and other inbreds tend to do less well.
yes also totally agree with scrontium dog . i'm nothing .
i have to add organised religions also.
they both divide people.
settle for human being.
It's good as long as your team is winning.
Pride goeth before a fall...:mid:
The poor person's only possession.
i beg to differ..i,m bloody proud i,m an ozzie and i where it with honour and a big smiley face!:)
I guess it would be a bit boring if we had no cultural identity and were just one big melting pot like the USA, only much much bigger.

I have two nationalities and am rather fond of both, but can't take any credit for their history nor their current state of wealth/success etc... (Ergo sum I can't be English then . . . :mid: )
It is fun to support one's antional team at sports and the like, of course, especially if noth countries are quite good at it . . . (another hint that I am not English. Double :mid: )
Far too often national pride turns to nationalism, jingoism and then xenophobia
it's an anchor for the weak, and very much needed as the majority is weak
I despise national pride even though we have to admit that is sometimes a necessary evil,
cultural roots are far more important, is it also national pride ?

Agree. Also every time I hear songs like that, or the "We Are The World" tune, I want to throw up.
