Radiant cooling - the "discreet (room) cooling" - is a sophisticated approach to comfortable, high-efficiency cooling. Due to its low energy consumption it is ideal for combination with solar or wind generated energy.
Hydronic Radiant Cooling (HRC) is very simple. Most conventional systems rely on convection (air movement) to transfer heat generated within an enclosed area and exhaust warm air from the space. HRC systems rely predominantly on radiation to transfer heat. The heat is transferred to cool surfaces - ceilings and floors - rather than being released into the air. With a radiant system, air can actually have a higher temperature than in a conventional system and produce the same perception of comfort.
Comfort relies as much on radiant heat transfer as it does on air temperature. Conventional air conditioning units are only designed to control air temperature. Because radiant energy travels through space without cooling the air itself but rather objects, hydronic radiant cooling systems separate ventilation from thermal conditioning, providing fresh air and conditioning independent from each other.
The human body transfers heat in three different ways: radiation, convection, and evaporation. Thermal comfort is when these three factors are in thermal neutrality. Ideally 50% of body heat is cooled by radiation, 30% by convection and 20% by evaporation (sweat and breathing). With an ideally designed conditioning system, the occupant would not know if it is cooling or heating.
Radiant cooling falls in the "air-and-water" category where the outside air ventilation system provides only the necessary fresh air while the hydronic thermal distribution system with a radiant heat exchanger provides the cooling. Therefore radiant cooling or heating systems address both, the convection and radiation factor of body heat whereas conventional air conditioning mainly address the convection factor by high air circulation.
As an additionnal benefit the GPI concrete core conditioning systems with multipipe tubes embedded in a concrete slab allows for peak load shifting because of its thermal storage capacity. This could be used also as a wall mass.
Because large surfaces are available for heat exchange in hydronic radiant cooling systems (usually almost the whole ceiling or floor), the coolant temperature is only slightly lower than the room temperature. Since the coolant can be maintained at a high temperature level, the use of heat pumps with high coefficient-of-performance values, cooling towers, night cooling, or some combination of these can reduce electric power requirements further.
More benefits:- Due to the high heat capacity and density of water, thermal energy can be transported in water in pipes by low power pumps, saving approximately 70 to 80% of fan power normally used to condition a building. This alone reduces the peak-power of the air-conditioning system by about 30 to 45%.
- No space conditioning equipment is necessary on exterior walls, and the panel system can use the automatic sprinkler system piping in some multi-family dwellings.

- Cooling is more evenly distributed,
- Once room surfaces reach a desired temperature they tend to maintain that temperature with relatively little extra energy.
- There is less exfiltration of cooled air when doors or windows are opened.
Since radiant cooling systems are constructed of components from the radiant heating and air conditioning industries, components are widely available. There are however relatively few engineers experienced in residential radiant cooling design. GPI engineers have many years of experience in installing these systems.

A geothermal heating and cooling system works on a simple premise: The earth below is at a constant temperature all year round. The earth's temperature changes in response to weather changes, but there is less change at greater depths.
Heat can be taken from within a building and transferred into the ground, cooling the building.
Loops of piping are buried in the ground, either vertically or horizontally and are connected to a circulating pump. The pump circulates a mixture of water and biodegradable antifreeze through the buried pipe loops, and the liquid mixture transports the heat absorbed in the building into the ground and deposits it there as it flows through the loop.
How about lower energy bills?
Depositing heat into the ground is free, and the only energy needed is for moving that heat between the building and the ground. In the ground the heat is transported away, thus using the ground as heat sink is naturally renewable and friendly to the environment.

These variations indicate the importance of an accurate estimate before any geothermal loop design can be finalized.
A detailed layer-by-layer description of the soil, along with any rock content, density, soil types and available water capacity, is needed.
