Philippines on red alert as Super Typhoon Noru approaches

The Philippines has issued an extreme emergency alert as Super Typhoon Noru approaches.


The storm, known locally as Super Typhoon Karding, reached super typhoon status early on Sunday morning local time in the Philippines after suddenly intensifying.


“The highest emergency preparedness and response protocol has been activated in Metro Manila, Central Luzon, Calabarzon, Mimaropa, and the Bicol region,” said the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council.


It urged the public to take care, adding strong winds are expected to hit within the next 18 hours


The typhoon is expected to make landfall in the northern part of Quezon or the southern part of Aurora in the evening, said the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) on a live hourly television bulletin.


It said it does not rule out an earlier landfall in Polillo Islands in the afternoon.

Schools in multiple cities including Muntinlupa City and Aurora suspended classes for Monday, Sept. 26, due to the approaching storm.


According to CNN Weather, Noru now has winds equal to a category 5 US hurricane.

It is expected to bring large waves and storm surge, torrential rains, and winds in excess of 200 kph (124 mph) to Luzon over the next 24 hours.


PAGASA issued a warning for the Polillo Islands in anticipation of extensive damage that could be caused by the storm.


The warning comes after the storm rapidly intensified in the early hours of Sunday.


The Joint Typhoon Warning Center said it had strengthened from a 140 kph (85 mph) typhoon to a 250 kph (155 mph) super typhoon in just six hours.


Earlier on Sunday the PAGASA has issued a signal warning level four for the Polillo Islands in anticipation of extensive damage and level two and three warnings for much of Luzon, including metro Manila.

True but that doesn't stop the rain and usually what happens the tropical storm slows down which means heavier rain in areas for longer periods of time.

Signal number 3 in my area (which indicates it will be strong). Have received alerts on my phone since this morning. Was cloudy all morning, now drizzling a bit. Landfall of the typhoon might be in 2 to 3 hrs. Am hunkering down. Still have electricity & water supply.

On a personal level, am glad that I did my hike last weekend & not today! (Hikes would've been cancelled for today).

According to the news, it's predicted to be Yolanda-like (Haiyan, 2013) in strength. That was very strong and mostly hit the Visayas (central islands). This typhoon will hit Central Luzon, including Metro Manila and some provinces south of it (including mine).

Davis' area will be hit too, but a bit less. I'm nearer to Manila than him. Tizme is in Metro Manila (BGC, I think). Probably raining there now.

@mike - days. A Tanduay bottle (750 ml) lasts me for several days. I just put a small spash of it in my (Tang) juice. :)

Even down here, we're getting rain bands and a little bit of wind. It's cooled things off nicely.

Same here HB. I swear. I walk across the yard and water swells into my shoes. I thought I'd find a small window to lop off some branches on a few trees. I set the ladder up and it sunk in the ground. Went and got some wood planks and even though it displaced it a bit the ladder was to wobbly. Maybe tomorrow.

Been raining steadily since my last post here. Been more windy too. Typhoon probably made landfall on the eastern side of Luzon already.

Update: skies are still a bit cloudy but no more rain. The typhoon is now on the western part of the country (West Phil Sea/ South China Sea). It's scheduled to leave the Phil Area of Responsibility tonight.

There wasn't too much rainfall or damage in my area. However, some provinces had to evacuate their residents and some towns/ provinces are flooded. Fortunately, the typhoon moved fast last night and didn't cause too much damage. There was also the Sierra Madre mountain range which weakened it considerably.

Many schools & offices are closed/ cancelled today (closure was declared yday) as a preventive measure.

Philippines’ Marcos orders aid for typhoon-struck areas, five reported dead

BULACAN, Philippines, Sept 26 (Reuters) – Philippine authorities rushed on Monday to distribute aid to thousands of evacuees after typhoon Noru made landfall in the capital and northern provinces, leaving at least five dead and many areas flooded.


Sustained winds of 185 kilometres (115 miles) per hour hit the main island of Luzon at the weekend, prompting authorities to shut schools, government offices and the stock market through Monday.


President Ferdinand Marcos ordered supplies be airlifted and clean-up equipment be provided to most-affected communities.


“The point at which we can stand down is when the majority of evacuees are already back home,” Marcos said at a news conference with disaster management officials on Monday, referring to the 74,000 people who were forced into evacuation centres by the storm.

Luzon, which accounts for more than two-thirds of the economy and roughly half of the country’s 110 million population, started clean-up operations as floods in the capital region had started subsiding, officials said.


Five rescue workers were killed in Bulacan province, Governor Daniel Fernando told DZMM radio station, where residents were seen wading through waist-deep waters while some were stranded on rooftops.


“Many homes were destroyed but all roads are passable and there were no landslides,” Quezon province Governor Helen Tan told DZRH radio station. The local government had started clearing fallen trees and other debris, she said.


President Marcos, who will conduct an aerial inspection later on Monday, also ordered officials to provide emergency power supply to two provinces north of the capital, Aurora and Nueva Ecija, which were left without electricity.


Noru made landfall as a category 3 typhoon and but weakened as it traversed land on Sunday night. The storm was headed out over the South China Sea and toward Vietnam, according to the state weather agency.


The Philippines, an archipelago of more than 7,600 islands, sees an average of 20 tropical storms yearly. In 2013, Typhoon Haiyan, one of the most powerful tropical cyclones ever recorded, killed 6,300 people.

Yes, the Northeast on Thursday night and then on to the North.

It's a beautiful day again in Chiang Mai. Might saddle up the roller skate and head out to the country for a spot of lunch.

Yesterday was pleasantly nice. Extremely humid but no rain. Wang River up another 1/2 meter and is still presenting flooding problems along many areas. Morning is nice. 2 days of drying out will help before the residual of Noru hits. As long as no high winds, no issue.

Yesterday was good. This morning we have grey skies, occasional spots of rain and no wind. I guess this is the front edge of Noru hoving into view. It is a big and slowing system, it could take a day or two to pass over.
