I'm thinking of bringing this sabbatical idea forward a little. Thinking of UK-India overland- once I am in India I can really hang about for 7 months or so. Planning on heading to Shimla/Manali and doing a lot of hiking and outdoor activities. Not interested in teaching, not convinced voluntourism is really very helpful in that regard. Actually a big part of the sabbatical is to get over this burnout.
By bus?
There used to be a bus from Bradford that ran to India. Decades ago, I don't suppose it is still an option.Quote:

it will be a trip you wont forget, its the high himalayas and one of those "worlds most dangerous roads" but the scenery is magnificent and its worth every bottom clenching moment.

once in ladakh, the high altitude trekking, the climbing and the off road trips to the remote monasteries and settlements around there are out of this world. in leh it's also worth hiring a motorbike and taking the road west along the indus river to kargil.

Haven't been to India (and won't go there if I'm solo, but I'm a girl), but I enjoyed watching the vlogs of Gabriel Traveler when he was in India (he's done several trips to India through the years).
Another one is Karl Rock - he's married to an Indian woman & speaks Hindi. He has some good travel vids & also vids against scams in India.
Try to visit the 7 sisters (7 northeastern states) too. I've heard that the culture is very different. People look different too - they look more SE Asian (but they're Indian). Had a seatmate from Laos - she was an Indian lady from the state of Manipur. We had interesting conversations during that long bus ride from Vientiane to Udon Thani.

you might add Nepal and journey through it to Assam, you may be hankering for a steak by then, and drop down to Calcutta and stay in the Oberoi Grand.

After Oria I went to Calcutta and NE Frontier Darjeeling then through Nepal. It's a big place
I spent ten month travelling in India after I completed my teaching assignment in Thailand. I started out with a month in Kolkata followed by a very memorable trip up to Darjeeling and from there explored the outer reaches of Assam. At one point I was way the hell north and eqidistant from both the Bhutanese and Chinese border. I highly recommend a trip to the area. The hiking is good and Darjeeling is a city I would love to return to. One thing to note is that the public washrooms in Darjeeling town have to be the stinkiest in all of south Asia. The trip north from Darjeeling offered me at one point a georgeous view of Everett and its neighours Totally gorgeous!
I stayed in the area for two month. The hiking, like I say was great. I then ventured over to Delphi where I spend a month in the heat, sweat and cow shit. I found some excellent pub in the area I was staying in. I travelled down to Rajastan for a month. It was damn hot and I avoided the camel rides. I then travelled to Rishikesh as well as Shimla. I spent a month in the area and then headed up to Dharamsala and McLeod Ganj where I spend time at my Gurus home.
I would highly recommend a trip to India if you can find a year. It's a tremendous eye opener. I was brought to tears several times totally overwhelmed by the poverty. The will and love of the Indian people leaves a lifetime memory.
If I were returning for a shorter trip I would fly into Calcutta and then spend most of my time in Darjeeling, a special town that has a certain energy I have never found elsewhere. Good luck on your travels.
