We set off around 2pm from a friends house in Bulacan, north of Manilla,
to drive down to the Taal lake where I'd booked a resort stay for me and the wife.
When we got in the car she saw on her phone the Taal volcano had erupted, so I asked how bad it was and she said there's just a bit of smoke coming out the top, but not too serious. So... off we went, but by the time we got down that way it had really gone boom!

We pulled over to take a look and get some photos, it really was incredible to see and hear the noise, surreal.
We drove on to the resort but they were evacuating and the whole area was potentially dangerous of course.
So there was no option but to drive back toward Manilla with heavy traffic, through the night and the ash fallout giving it a genuine apocalyptic vibe.
We eventually ended up in a hotel at Clark about 6 hours later.
Quite the day trip! :)
Holy shit! I always worry about volcanoes and earthquakes here in Seattle.

Would have been more entertaining if all the ash hadn't been permeating my house. My development turned into a ghost town in a day or so, as folks fled (this was just before Covid, when one could still flee).
Still, didn't hold a candle to Pinatubo in '91. Looking out the window, the ash cover looked like we had had a snowstorm.

In the past 24-hour period, the Taal Volcano Network recorded twenty-seven (27) volcanic tremor events having durations of one (1) to forty-five (45) minutes and low-level background tremor that has persisted since 07 July 2021. Activity at the Main Crater was dominated by upwelling of hot volcanic fluids in its lake which generated plumes 2,000 meters tall that drifted to the northeast. Sulfur dioxide (SO2) emission averaged 9,025 tonnes/day on 14 August 2021. In addition, vog was observed over Taal Volcano and vicinity. Based on ground deformation parameters from electronic tilt, continuous GPS and InSAR monitoring, Taal Volcano Island has begun deflating in April 2021 while the Taal region continues to undergo very slow extension since 2020.
Alert Level 2 (Increased Unrest) now prevails over Taal Volcano. DOST-PHIVOLCS reminds the public that at Alert Level 2, sudden steam- or gas-driven explosions, volcanic earthquakes, minor ashfall, and lethal accumulations or expulsions of volcanic gas can occur and threaten areas within and around TVI. DOST-PHIVOLCS strongly recommends that entry must be strictly prohibited into Taal Volcano Island, Taal’s Permanent Danger Zone or PDZ, especially the vicinities of the Main Crater and the Daang Kastila fissure, and occupancy and boating on Taal Lake. Local government officials are advised to continuously assess and strengthen the preparedness of previously evacuated barangays around Taal Lake in case of renewed unrest. Civil aviation authorities must advise pilots to avoid flying close to the volcano as airborne ash and ballistic fragments from sudden explosions and wind-remobilized ash may pose hazards to aircraft. DOST-PHIVOLCS is closely monitoring Taal Volcano’s activity and any new significant development will be immediately communicated to all stakeholders.
