WASHINGTON - The federal government says Michael Spavor and Michael Kovrig, who have been in custody in China for more than two years, will have court hearings in the coming days. Foreign Affairs Minister Marc Garneau says the Canadian Embassy in Beijing was notified today that Spavor's court hearing will take place Friday and Kovrig's will happen Monday.He says their detentions are "arbitrary" and that Canada continues to work "tirelessly" to secure their release.The two Canadian men, known to many around the world simply as "the two Michaels," were detained in December 2018.Their cases have been widely linked to Canada's decision to detain Huawei chief financial officer Meng Wanzhou on behalf of the U.S. Department of Justice.The controversy has been taken up by several of Canada's allies, including U.S. President Joe Biden, who recently pledged his support to help free the two men.

Hopefully our American friends will be doing us a favour by arm twisting a few Chinese arms up in Alaska this weekend. This is all timed to tie into the Meng Wangzho, Huawei CFO's trial resumption in Vancouver today. Canada stupidly acted on an American warrant to arrest Mr. Wangzho at Vancouver airport well over two years ago. Within a short time of the Meng arrest the Chinese grapped two Canadian "off the street" as it were, one an ex-diplomat.

It would have been a highly sensitive situation anyway but Mr. Donald J. Trump marched into the situation to indicate that the issue "was indeed a political situation and the horse trading could progress. So be mannered, return us the favour.

A serious time for Canada has just become far more serious.

I do hope the western world might take a stand on this issue.

After all they will have to take a stand on some issue to stop these fuckers in their tracks.

These two people were hauled off to their dungeons clearly as a reprisal for the arrest of Mrs. Wangzho , the Chinese are arguing otherwise but I think things are pretty clear. Many Canadian are angry that the two Michaels have been thrown into these ghastly prison cells with little consular assistance while Mrs. Wangzho continues to live in one of her multi-million dollar Vancouver homes, wearing an ankle device but clear to go shopping and do other things in the community.

We'll see. I sense that things are rapidly shaking down and we will see a prisoner exchange arranged on the weekend. The Chinese can pretty much grab anybody they want anytime off any street in the PRC. I'm not sure anybody can do anything about this.

Sovereign states can do what they want. China is not obligated by any legal body to recognize the charges that the US brought against one of their citizens. If it was a legitimate charge , Interpol would have arrested her. But they didn't.
