Bangkok to ban trucks with more than six wheels from 6am to 9pm for 3 months
Trucks, with more than six wheels, will be banned from Bangkok from 6am to 9pm, from December 1st until end of February, as the city’s administration takes precautionary steps to deal with air pollution during the cold season, mostly caused by PM2.5 dust particles.
Bangkok Governor Aswin Kwanmuang said today that the decision to ban such trucks was agreed upon at a recent meeting of the Pollution Control Department, the Health Department, the Meteorological Department, the Industrial Works Department, the Land Transport Department and the Royal Thai Police.
Air pollution tends to increase during the cold season, due to poor air circulation, so the Governor said City Hall will seek cooperation from schools, asking them to suspend outdoor activities, from December through February, adding that, if the air quality worsens to levels that pose a health threat, schools may be told to suspend classes.
Air quality monitoring stations have been set up in 50 districts of Bangkok, and 20 more stations are to be installed in public parks, so that people visiting the them can keep themselves updated on the local air quality, said the Governor.
According to the Pollution Control Department, the amount of PM2.5 at seven locations in Bangkok and neighboring provinces exceeded safety levels yesterday (Monday).
They were Paknam subdistrict in Muang district of Samut Prakan, Mahachai subdistrict in Muang district of Samut Sakhon, the Rama II Road in Bang Khun Thian district, the Rama III Road in Yan Nawa district, Srinakharin Road in Prawet District, Ma Charoen Road in Nong Khaem district and Ekachai Road in Bang Bon district.
