Weather in Southern Thailand Right Now?
Hey I am in Chang Mai with the wife right now. We are going to spend a few days in Udon visiting friends, but after that we are thinking about going to Krabi or maybe Ko Samui. I can see that the ten-day forecast is for rain about every day down there, but the question is is it going to rain all day or just for a couple hours a day like it is doing up here? Is the wind going to be whipping up the waters and making it unpleasant to swim, or what? In other words, is it worth going down there or should we think about spending time somewhere else?
Thanks for the advice, all
We just got back to the US after 34 days in Thailand. We spent 10 days in Samui/Phangan. It rained most days, but only for an hour or so in the afternoon. Perfect weather. I heard that the Andaman coast was hit hard by monsoons, so this was a great choice for us.
First, we stayed 3 days in Moon Hut in Mae Nam on Samui. The beach was nice, but I thought that Samui (at least the side of the island we were on) was a little overdeveloped for my taste (just like everyone here has said). Moon Hut has a nice restaurant right on the beach with nice people, and there's an easy walk out to the main road. My wife became fast friends with a lady that runs a little coffee stand out on the road, so it was fresh coffee and batango every morning for us. We made it out to the main town once and checked out the mall and did other touristy stuff like taking a speedboat out to Ang Thong.
Then we went to Phangan - 2 nights in Had Salad, 1 on Chalongklam, 2 in Had Kuat, and 2 in Had Yao. Had Kuat was definitely the nicest beach with the clearest water. The others were all fine, although Had Yao had a lot of sea urchins on the bottom.
Phangan was beautiful but there was a weird dynamic between the (mostly unfriendly) Farang tourists and the Thais, especially in the areas where all the Yoga people were hanging out. As expected, also, it was the most expensive place we saw in all of Thailand. A short songthaew ride was 150 baht, compared to 20 baht in Chiangmai. Still, we were lucky to hit the island right before their high season so we never paid more than 1500 baht for a nice room.
