At least three people have been killed and several others injured, after an explosion hit an residential building north of Bangkok, the Thai capital.

The blast occurred at about 6:00 pm local time (11:00 GMT) in the Bang Bua Thong district of Nonthaburi Province on Tuesday, a local police official said.

"We still don't know the cause of the explosion. Two storeys of the mansion collapsed," Colonel Somchai Hussakul, a police spokesman, said. He said the blast came from a room in the building.

The explosion came hours after Thailand's government extended a controversial state of emergency in Nonthaburi and three other provinces, including Bangkok, in the wake of deadly street protests and a series of grenade blasts in the capital.

A string of small bombings, thought to be politically motivated have hit Bangkok and the surrounding areas this year.

Authorities recently warned that stepped-up violence was expected beginning this month, and over the weekend 11 men were detained in the northern province of Chiang Mai. They are suspected of training for armed attacks on behalf of a movement to overthrow Thailand's monarchy.

An explosion at a housing estate in Nonthaburi killed two people and injured four others Tuesday evening, rescueressaid.

The Ruam Katanyu Foundation reported over its radio network that the explosion occurred at the Thippawan housing estate near Bang Bua Thong Market.

The blast caused a five-story building to collapse.

Develoments on Nonthaburi Bombing

UPDATE : 5 October 2010

Officials have evacuated nearby buildings as fears that the five story might collapse. People have been advised to avoid the area. Injured victims have been transported to near by Bang Bua Thong Hospital. Of the three victims killed in the blast, two are reportedly male. Another is female. However, some sources claim only two deaths have been confirmed.

Seven injuries have been reported so far. Two of which are considered serious injuries. One is reportedly a 36 year old man. Another is believed to be a 7 year old child. The victims have been divided to the Bang Bua Thong and Pra Nangklao hospitals.

Three persons were killed and four were seriously injured after a bomb exploded on the second storey of a five-storey apartment building in Nonthaburi province, collapsed on Tuesday evening.
According to the Emergency Medical Institute, three persons were pronounced dead at the scene and the four who were seriously injured were rushed to Bang Bua Thong Hospital and Phra Nangklao Hospital.
The bomb exploded at about 6 pm on the second floor of a five-storey apartment building called Samarn Metta Mansion in Thipsuwan village off Bangkruai-Sai Noi Road in Bang Bua Thong district, the Emergency Medical Institute reported.
Three cars parked nearby the apartment were also damaged.
Police from the Scientific Crime Detection Division were examining the scene and looking for people who might have been trapped under the rubble of the collapsed mansion building.

First Blast Victim Identified

UPDATE : 5 October 2010

The first victim of the Nonthaburi bomb blast has been identified as Apirak Sajjabunlukit. He was an employee at the nearby fishing dock who was in his room on the second floor of the building when the bomb exploded. His body was thrown ten meters.

Don't have to be a bomb, I've seen houses turned to match sticks by natural gas/air mix explosions and a house with all its doors + window blown out and several internal walls blown out by a rusted aerosol can that burst and the fridge detonating the resultant air/fuel mix.

If they start talking bombs, I would like to know if they are using anything more sophisticated than a GT-200 to detect any residuals

When I stay in Bangkok it is usually in a predominantly muslim suburb of the city and probably the safest place to be.

Could be a gas explosion, but it's pretty hard to get a bottle to explode rather than burn.

CH3 Thai news is reporting the people renting the room come from ChiangMai.
They also interviewed an official who claimed they found another unexploded bomb in the room.

It is unlike any of the small bombs or grenades before.

One can only hope it was a gas explosion and not a new type of homemade bomb. True you don't get a gas cylinder to explode. But an old gas hose can leak and with the right mix of gas and air in a closed room you can get a huge explosion.

At least three people have been killed and nine injured in an explosion at an apartment complex in a Bangkok suburb.

Police said the blast was likely to have been caused by a large bomb, but were unable to confirm details.

There was no immediate explanation why the six-floor block in Nonthaburi province might have been a target.

Thailand has seen a string of bombings in recent months after protests failed to oust the government, and also has a long-running insurgency in its south.
Nonthaburi province is one of a number of areas of the country currently under emergency rule, imposed by the government of Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva after street protests in Bangkok turned deadly earlier in 2010.

There are regular small blasts around the capital, but correspondents say Tuesday's explosion was one of the largest in recent times.

"It was definitely a bomb. We cannot say what type of bomb it is yet," Major General Prawut Tawornsiri told the AFP news agency.

"But it was a massive bomb because it damaged a large area."

Early reports suggested that the blast was large enough to have been caused by as much as 50kg of explosives.

Police were assessing the building to see if it was in danger of collapsing, reports said, and were investigating whether the explosion could have been caused by explosives detonated accidentally.

"It is possible they were storing an explosive device for an operation and it exploded prematurely," Reuters news agency quoted one police official as saying.

Three dead, nine injured in blast - Suspect believed to be Chiang Mai man

Police are looking to question a Chiang Mai man following an explosion last night at a five-storey apartment in Nonthaburi which killed three people and injured nine others.

A source at the Crime Suppression Division said Room 202 at Samarn Metta Mansion, where the blast is believed to have occurred, was rented to Samai Wongsuwan from Hang Dong district in Chiang Mai.

Another police source said it was believed Mr Samai had driven a car from Chiang Mai and left it on April 5 in the parking lot of Poseidon massage parlour on Ratchadaphisek Road, where it later exploded.

Investigators will hold talks today at the Police Region 1 headquarters to try to come up with a motive for the planting of the explosive in the apartment.

The powerful bomb, which was detonated at 6pm, ripped through the first and second floors of the apartment block in Thipsuwan housing estate off Bangkruai-Sai Noi road in Nonthaburi's Bang Bua Thong district.

Pol Lt Col Kamthorn Ouicharoen, deputy chief of the Metropolitan Police Bureau's explosive ordnance disposal squad, said the bomb probably weighed more than 10 kilogrammes.

The building belongs to Saman Boonprasert, 54, who was supervising the decoration of the ground floor of his home next door when the bomb went off. His wife Issara said he was among the injured.

The explosion caused extensive damage to the building's interior and nearby shophouses, townhouses and vehicles.

Investigators assisted by a team of military bomb disposal experts sealed the area around the building as they scoured the scene for evidence to determine the cause of the explosion.

The bodies of three victims were found inside the building. Police identified one as Apirak Sajjabanyongkij, 20, a grilled-egg vendor.

The nine injured were rushed to Bang Bua Thong and Phra Nangklao hospitals, an Emergency Medical Institute spokesman said.

Seven who were slightly injured were discharged after receiving treatment. They were: Phatcharaphan Nuansithai, 23; Pheeraphat Jatkham, 24; Weeraphat Wangyaichim, 16; Songkran Bucha, 28; Natthaworn Khlaichinda,3; Surat Inpleng, 36, and Samarn Bunprasert.

Two others being treated at Phra Nangklao were in a serious condition, including a seven-year-old boy, Nitiphong Phoonoo. His skull was fractured after being hit by bomb shrapnel.

The other victim, Weerasak Anuphan, 38, broke the upper part of his thighbone.

The bomb went off just hours after the cabinet announced Bangkok and its three surrounding provinces of Nonthaburi, Pathum Thani and Samut Prakan would remain under emergency rule for another three months.

Deputy government spokesman Supachai Jaisamut said the executive decree on public administration in emergency situations would remain in effect in greater Bangkok for security reasons.

The National Security Council cited the continued activities of the United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship as being behind the proposal to extend the decree.

UDD activities could be used by those wanting to incite turmoil, the NSC said.

The agency said activities against the royal institution and the mobilisation of UDD supporters were gathering pace in greater Bangkok.

The cabinet also acknowledged the appointment of Defence Minister Prawit Wongsuwon as director of the Centre for the Resolution of the Emergency Situation to replace Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban when he stands down to contest a by-election later this month in Surat Thani.

Permanent secretary for education Chaleaw Yusimarak was appointed a new member of the CRES.

A bomb exploded in the car park of Thonglor Pet Hospital on Sirindhorn Road in Bang Phlad district at 10.45pm on Monday night.

The explosion damaged a black Honda City sedan belonging to Daralrat Thumchai, 31, a veterinarian at the hospital.

Bang Phlad police said it was a low-power bomb made from gunpowder and nails stuffed in a plastic box and detonated by a time delay device.

The veterinarian is not believed to have personal conflicts.

Police suspect the bombing was aimed at triggering turmoil.

Meanwhile, Lt Gen Udomdet Sitabutr, the commander of the 1st Army which supervises the Central Plains, said his subordinates were carefully monitoring the security situation and were conducting intelligence operations to prevent further incidents.
