October "Must See" movie thread

Always looking for new "obscure" or "forgotten" movies to watch.

Never saw "Batman: The beginning", so I rented it.

It was surprisingly good, much better than the stupid mega commercial version we have seen in the last few years.

Good actors, very good actions, scenario makes much more sense and doesn't feel like it was put together in a rush. Good story build up with surprisingly no holes like in the other versions. Well, basically it doesn't feel as much as the big joke like the other ones. It's quite dark, and I liked it. Refreshing. Characters build up and the actual Batman custome character is secondary and in the background. No show off.

A must see.

Also went to see "The Departed", new movie. Also dark with a Tarantino style ending. A lot of excellent young actors. Good story, good scenario (even though a bit transparent at times). Dark ending. Very unhollywood.

Director is Scorcese.

A must see.

I thought the Batman movie was fairly ok. Certainly better that the others.

I haven't seen a movie in quite a while, as there has just been a constant stream of shite coming out of Hollywood recently. The last US movie I enjoyed was Lost in Translation.

I rented that one the other day, another "forgotten" movie. It was quite ok. Strange atmosphere, but at the same time refreshing.

Don't have time much to go to the movies, so I missed them most. But renting here seems to be getting better. I mean $1 DVD for 3 nights, that's quite OK, and if you really like the movie, you can make a copy. Tired to buy shitty bootlegs for $2.

^Lost in translation is the only movie that has successfully managed to fully convey the feeling of jetlag, I think.

"The Castle" is a great Aussie movie.prolly on of the funniest to come out of Australia.Not sure if Europeans and yanks would "get" the Aussie humour, but it truly is a classoc. Never known anybody who didn't like it.

^ I found it funny, but only in some places, I think you'll need to be fairly familiar with Australia(ns) to laugh in the right places.

I saw Lucky Number Slevin on a plane and thought that it was excellent. I guess the film is a bit old now but if you haven't seen it then I think that you'll enjoy it if you like films like that.

Prestige - Hugh Jackman/Christian Bale - rival magicians. Directed by same lad who did Batman Returns.

I liked Revolver better, more twisted.

Crank had more action.

I like that guy very much, he is good. Why isn't he the new James Bond, I have no idea.

just read a favourable review in the paper today abt it... will go see it soonish...

a little bit more hollywood but i saw RV with Robin Williams on an airplane recently, i was laffing out loud it was so funny (meanwhile the missus was angrily digging me in the ribs telling me to shut the fck up, i was embarrasing her!)

I saw the Prestige. It was pretty good and I didn't get bored or antsy once throughout the entire time.

I head through the grapevine that Borat wasn't scheduled to be released in LOS.

While 20th Century Fox could crow about "Borat," the studio's Russell Crowe-Ridley Scott reunion "A Good Year" flopped, coming in at No. 10 with $3.8 million. "A Good Year" was a departure for the star and director of "Gladiator," a soft romance with Mr. Crowe as a London investment shark seduced by the laid-back life at a French vineyard he inherits.

The movie generally was panned by critics, and audiences apparently weren't willing to accept broody actor Mr. Crowe in a romantic lead, said Bruce Snyder, head of distribution for 20th Century Fox.

Audiences were willing to accept Mr. Cohen as Borat, the Kazakh TV journalist he originated on "Da Ali G Show," who jumps to the big screen in a mock documentary about his journey across America.

Crudely funny and raucously satiric, "Borat" was a surprise winner at the box office with a $26.5 million opening weekend, even though it played in only 837 theaters, fewer than one-fourth the number of cinemas for "The Santa Clause 3" and "Flushed Away."

Some box-office analysts had questioned whether 20th Century Fox missed the boat by launching "Borat" in so few theaters, saying the movie could have rung up millions more on opening weekend if it had gone wider.

But Mr. Snyder said the buzz from the movie's huge debut proved a great prelude to wider release in its second weekend, when it expanded to 2,566 theaters. "When a picture takes off like this, you can do it any way you want and you can't screw it up, quite honestly, when a picture becomes a part of the culture like this," Mr. Snyder said.

Expanding nationwide after two weekends in limited release, Paramount Vantage's drama "Babel" was No. 6 with $5.65 million. With an ensemble cast that includes Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett, "Babel" traces the repercussions of a shooting in the African desert on families around the globe.

Sarah Michelle Gellar's supernatural thriller "The Return" opened weakly with $4.8 million to come in at No. 8. Released by Focus Features, the movie wasn't screened beforehand for critics, generally a sign the distributor expects bad reviews.

MGM's "Harsh Times," a gritty street drama starring Christian Bale and Freddy Rodriguez, also had a poor debut of $1.8 million, finishing out of the top 10. Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Exhibitor Relations Co. Inc. Final figures will be released Monday.
