Would a pig spare a bullet for a suffering woof woof?

I treated myself to a big fat steak & kidney pie with french fries and beans at this secret oasis I know behind an apartment I don't live in because it's 12,000 a month and I can't afford it - anyway, I'm taking the shortcut back to my soi, past the market what was being dismantled, and I hear this heartbreaking whine, and it's the dog I have seen before.

It's your average breed of soi dog (whatever that breed is) - it's got a tumor on it's neck, a maggot infested arsehole and it's legs are completely fucked and it must only be a teenager (in dog years) - it normally stands at the end of the soi like a newborn giraffe, it's bow legs looking like they were once broken - all four of them, and healed in a stupid position.

On this occasion the dog is emerging from under one of those crappy metal folding tables like what you get at pink tissue restaurants all over the country that are always painted red or blue; and as usual the dog is looking sad, unloved and confused and this time there's a small black and white cat, like Postman Pat's cat, and it's literally next to the dog looking at it condescendingly as if to say "You're fucking pathetic" and despite being a cat lover, I'm on the dogs side and I just want to see the thing out of it's misery but what can I do?

I think about calling November Rain but then realize that she's in the UK and that even if she wasn't, she'd be down in Hua Hin and it wouldn't be much use. I want to put on some latex gloves and pat the dog on the head whilst administering a painless yet lethal injection that will send it to doggy heaven but I have no such apparatus.

I look around and I see a triangular lump of concrete by a gutter and consider striking it on the head a few times but can't bring myself to do it and by this time the orange vests are being nosey so I just fuck off and on the way home I wonder if, had excreta been present (a policeman) - there would have been any chance of him doing something decent for once in his life and shooting the mutt in the head. I would have been willing to pay for the bullet.

What does one do in such a situation? ...I feel sad.

Since I have been back in Bangkok working I have seen these poor shocking disease ridden dogs all over the place including the so called up-market tourist areas.

I don't understand the Buddhist religion but why they don't do something about putting these poor creatures out of their misery escapes me.

Not only is it visually upsetting but dangerous to the general public and with regard to health issues not to mention the number of traffic accidents they cause.

In Cairo if there was a mangy mutt wandering around and a policeman saw it he would give it a crack on the head with his night stick , or shoot it if it was a big one, and carry on strolling down the street ( this was in the 70's) give 10 piastres to the first street cleaner he saw and they got rid of it .

GS, you're a right old softy....but I fully understand. Have experienced the exact same dilemma on many occasions.

Horrible to view and contemplate....worse still to do the right thing. I just don't have what it takes to kill things.

There was a guy in my year at school who could always be relied upon to end the suffering of animals found about the place. He used to help us with these dilemmas. He was dead good at breaking necks of suffering birds, or killing roadkill, which hadn't quite died yet. He freed us of our guilt and responsibility. Never seemed to bother him. In he'd march, do the deed like he was undoing a particularly tricky jam jar lid and then triumphantly stomp off. All cool and casual like.

I heard he's doing time now though, for manslaughter.

Instead of offering to pay for the bullet just slip 200bt under the dogs collar and then whistle the rozzer over. He's bound to shoot it for 200bt.

There is a lady who always takes soy dogs to the vet we used to go. She brings them in the back of her pick up, usually in a blanket to avoid being bitten. She pays, the vet takes care of them.

Is there a stray dog pick up service / humane society I could pay to come get all the homeless dogs from my village. There are about 15 and I would pay 3k baht to anyone who would get rid of them for me.

Maybe a Bangkok Humane Society link ?

Apparently some people go around certain areas collecting up unwanted stray dogs in exchange for plastic buckets (sounds bizarre I know but life is that way sometimes). The myth continues that the dogs are transported away to the northeast of the country where they are introduced to the Thai version of that Korean sport "Wokking the dog".

in most civilized countries, the dogs will be put to sleep

in third world countries, there are other priorities, and the soi dogs are left to rot

I guess it's because this is Thailand, cats are meows ergo dogs must be woofs.

btw cats are meows also here in VN, dogs are tasty if a little chewy.

British kids say 'woof woof!' to denote the speech of a dog but a Thai child will insist that the correct sound is 'hong hong!' - which it isn't at all, it's 'woof woof' and pigs go 'Oink Oink' though Thais will say 'Oot Oot' - ask your kids.

Obviously they don't have a version of "Old McSomchai had a farm".

The police used to shoot the Soi dogs down Soi Diana Inn in Pattaya, thinking about it someone must have been paying them to do it, I can guess which business it was.

They probably did it for fun, not mercy.

If it's not skanky dogs it's limbless beggars, destitution is never far from the eye in this country.

Bangkok, right? Contact SCAD (Soi Cat & Dog) www.scadbangkok.org They might be able to help in one way or another. They won't take it in, but they may agree to take a look to see if it does need euthanising or tell you vets in your area who would euthanise. Not all vets will do this, even for an animal that's suffering.

As I've said before, no. There isn't. Some areas have govt pounds, but even the least humane of you wouldn't wish the treatment meted out in these to an animal. The other problem is the sheer numbers of soi dogs. You clear out the dogs in your area, Chi and I guarantee you within a month, there will be a similar number of perhaps more unhealthy, noisy or even aggressive dogs taking their place. The only thing stopping more dogs inhabiting your village is your existing ones who have established their territory & will not let other dogs in.

Your best bet is getting the existing community of dogs neutered & vaccinated, so they won't breed & will pose less of a health risk. SCAD can help with this, if you contact them. Otherwise, pm me & I'll let you know of other BKK based orgs who can help.

Simply go back to school until you learn the difference between it's (abbreviation of it is or it has) and its (possessive adjective for neutral gender)... and life will smile again to you ! :)

I have to confess none but then I don't know any golfers.

If I lived near a golf course I would buy an air rifle and use their wobbly arses for target practise.

most people without hand eye coordination would probably say the same and then revert to typing on a forum.
